Is ARC Raiders worth buying if you mostly play solo? (2026 guide)

Yes, conditionally. ARC Raiders is worth buying as a mostly solo player if you want an online extraction game built around scavenging, crafting, exploration and occasional encounters with other human Raiders. It is not a substitute for an offline campaign, and it cannot guarantee that another player will not attack your run.

As of October 18, 2026, a temporary PvE Toggle Beta Test is running from October 13 through October 20. That test makes solo play considerably safer, but there is no established permanent PvE-only mode after the test ends.

The short answer for solo buyers

ARC Raiders is designed to be played alone or in small groups, not only as a team game. PlayStation’s FAQ describes it as an online, multiplayer-only game that can be played “solo, as one Raider going Topside, as well as in teams of two or three.” You can enter a raid by yourself, fight ARC machines, gather materials, complete quests, improve your equipment and attempt to extract without bringing teammates.

The important qualification is that “solo” describes your party size, not the entire match. You remain connected to shared online spaces where other Raiders may be absent, cooperative or hostile. A quiet run can turn into a fight around valuable loot or an extraction point. If you enjoy that uncertainty, it is the game’s central appeal. If you want complete control over who can affect your progress, the online-only structure is a persistent drawback.

#1 Best Overall
ARC Raiders Deluxe - PC Steam [Online Game Code]
  • ARC Raiders Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the following content: The Wanderer Set, including the following cosmetic items: “Valente” Outfit" “Pathfinder” Backpack,“Blanket Roll” Backpack Attachment.
  • Plus: Character Cosmetic, Finger Gun Rapid Fire Emote, Cowboy Scrappy Body Type and Skin, 2 400 Raider Tokens.

The best buying decision therefore depends on which of these descriptions sounds more attractive:

  • Good fit: you want a repeatable loop of entering, scavenging, crafting, upgrading and deciding when to leave, with machine combat and occasional human encounters.
  • Poor fit: you want a self-contained single-player story, an offline mode or permanently guaranteed PvE-only progression.

The current PvE toggle improves the short-term case for solo players, but it should be treated as a limited-time bonus rather than a feature you can assume will remain.

What “playing solo” actually means

You can queue and raid without teammates

ARC Raiders supports a one-player party. You do not need to find friends or fill a squad before going Topside. The official description presents the game as a multiplayer extraction adventure while also inviting players to “rise in the ranks as a lone ranger.” That means the core activities—entering a surface map, fighting ARC machines, collecting loot, pursuing quests and trying to extract—are available when you are the only member of your party.

Solo play also changes the way you read risk. With no teammate to revive you, share equipment or cover an escape, every decision belongs to you. You choose whether a fight is worth the noise and exposure, whether to continue searching for a better item and whether to leave with what you already have. The game’s design makes those decisions the substance of a run rather than a preliminary step before a scripted mission.

You are still in an online multiplayer match

Solo does not mean offline. PlayStation explicitly labels ARC Raiders as online and multiplayer-only, and Steam lists online PvP, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Other Raiders can be present in the same surface environment even when you entered alone. Their behavior is deliberately uncertain: they may ignore you, cooperate briefly or attack.

That distinction answers several common questions at once:

  • Does it have a single-player mode? It has solo play, but not an offline single-player campaign.
  • Can you play without teammates? Yes. You can go Topside as one Raider.
  • Can you avoid all other players? Not reliably in the standard online experience.
  • Is every encounter PvP? No. Other players may be absent or peaceful, but the possibility of PvP remains.

How a solo session works

The loop is easier to evaluate when separated into the decisions you make before, during and after a raid.

1. Prepare in Speranza

Steam describes Speranza as the place where you craft, repair and upgrade gear. Preparation determines what you are risking and what you hope to bring back. A solo player has no partner to compensate for a missing weapon, spare supplies or a failed plan, so the value of each item is more personal: losing one piece of equipment can change the next run’s options.

Preparation is also where the game’s progression becomes tangible. Materials collected on earlier expeditions can be turned into equipment improvements, while quests give you additional reasons to return to the surface. The result is a cycle rather than a one-time mission list: your next raid is influenced by what you recovered from the previous one.

2. Go Topside and read the environment

On the surface, ARC machines are the constant environmental threat. Their presence gives solo players something to do even when no human opponent appears. You search for resources, pursue objectives and decide how much danger to accept while moving through the map.

The absence of a teammate makes information more important. You have to notice threats, judge whether a route is exposed and decide if a valuable item justifies staying longer. The game does not remove tension when a match is quiet; quiet time is when you are weighing what might happen next.

3. Decide how to handle other Raiders

Human encounters are not governed by a fixed script. PC Gamer’s review described solo matches as more peaceful, including runs in which the reviewer saw nobody and encounters where both sides reached a “don’t shoot” understanding before extracting. Those examples show why solo play can feel less frantic than team-based extraction games without becoming predictable.

You can attempt to avoid fights, communicate peaceful intent or engage when you believe the reward justifies the risk. None of those approaches guarantees safety. Another player can interpret the same situation differently, particularly near valuable loot or an extraction area. The tension comes from having to make a decision without knowing which response you will receive.

4. Extract or accept the consequences of staying too long

Extraction is the point at which what you found becomes meaningful. Other players understand that, so extraction locations can become pressure points. A solo Raider must decide whether to leave with a modest haul or remain on the surface for a better one while exposing the run to additional machine and player threats.

Failure is not necessarily a total reset. PC Gamer reported that experience and resources can still progress when a player fails to extract, and characterized ARC Raiders as more forgiving than harsher extraction games. That softens the cost of experimentation, although losing a particular haul can still matter to your equipment plans.

How much PvP pressure should a solo player expect?

There is no single “solo server” experience in the standard mode. The safest accurate description is mixed pressure: some raids may feel almost entirely PvE, while others can become dangerous because of another Raider’s choices.

Situation What a solo player may experience What is not guaranteed
Quiet exploration You may find no other player and spend the run fighting ARC machines and collecting materials. A player-free match every time.
Brief encounter You may reach a “don’t shoot” understanding and continue toward extraction. That another Raider will honor the understanding.
Contested loot Another player may compete for the same valuable resources or objective. Exclusive access to an area because you arrived first.
Extraction point The approach or departure can become a high-risk moment if another Raider is nearby. A safe extraction simply because you are playing alone.

This makes ARC Raiders less punishing than a game that forces constant combat, but more volatile than a conventional cooperative PvE title. The relevant question is not “Does solo mode remove PvP?”—it does not—but “Can I enjoy a game where PvP is possible and sometimes absent?”

The October 13–20, 2026 PvE Toggle Beta Test

The official ARC Raiders site lists a “PvE Toggle Beta Test: October 13-20.” PC Gamer’s October 14 report says the toggle allows players to explore, fight ARC machines and help other Raiders without worrying that a nearby player will shoot them.

For a solo-oriented buyer, this is the strongest current argument in favor of the game. It lets you learn maps, understand the extraction rhythm and practice machine encounters without the usual uncertainty from human opponents. It also gives players who dislike PvP a way to sample the game’s crafting and progression loop under calmer conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, the dates matter. The test is temporary, and no authoritative source establishes that a permanent PvE-only mode will remain after October 20. Do not purchase on the assumption that the toggle will be available indefinitely. If you are deciding during the test window, it is a useful opportunity; if you are deciding after the window, check the current in-game and official announcements rather than assuming the feature survived unchanged.

The toggle also does not turn ARC Raiders into an offline campaign. You still need an online connection, and the game remains an online service with its own progression and matchmaking structure.

Is the PvE combat substantial enough on its own?

Yes, there is a real PvE loop even when no human opponent appears. ARC machines are the primary non-player threat, and the surface maps provide the setting for scavenging, quests and resource gathering. Steam’s description frames the game around crafting, repairing and upgrading gear in Speranza before facing machines and the unpredictable choices of fellow survivors.

That combination matters because a solo player is not merely waiting for PvP. You can have a productive run by fighting machines, searching for materials and completing objectives. The tension comes from balancing those activities against the possibility of another Raider, not from PvP replacing the rest of the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The limitation is variety of motivation. If your ideal solo game is a tightly authored campaign with a final ending, ARC Raiders may feel directionless once the repeatable loop stops being rewarding. Its structure is closer to an ongoing service: prepare, deploy, scavenge, extract or fail, then use the result to improve the next attempt.

Progression, crafting and the cost of failure

Crafting and upgrades give successful extraction a purpose beyond a score screen. Materials gathered Topside feed into equipment decisions in Speranza, and quests provide additional progression targets. A solo player can therefore build a personal rhythm: gather what is needed, improve a tool or weapon, then return with a new objective.

Failure is less absolute than in the most severe extraction games. PC Gamer reported that XP and resources can still progress when a player fails to extract. This reduces the feeling that one ambush invalidates an entire evening. It does not make death irrelevant: a failed run can still cost the particular items you carried or prevent you from bringing back the materials you wanted.

That balance is important for solo suitability. A forgiving progression model gives you room to learn without a team, while the threat of losing a haul preserves the reason to play carefully. Players who need every run to produce a guaranteed reward may still find the uncertainty frustrating.

Value, editions and platform requirements

ARC Raiders launched on October 30, 2025. PC Gamer listed an expected launch price of $40 in the United States and £30 in the United Kingdom in its November 6, 2025 review. Those figures describe the expected launch price, not a universal current price. Steam currently shows standard and Deluxe editions with region-specific displayed prices, so check the store page for your currency and the edition contents before buying.

Current PC editions Steam lists Standard and Deluxe editions. The current price and exactly what the Deluxe edition includes.

Because prices, editions and service requirements can change, treat the launch figures as historical context rather than a promise of what you will pay today. The solo question is partly a value question: a repeatable online loop can justify the price for someone who plays many short or ongoing sessions, but it is a weaker purchase for someone seeking a finite campaign.

How the game’s reception informs a solo purchase

PC Gamer scored ARC Raiders 86 in its 2025 review and called it a genuinely enjoyable extraction shooter built around interesting weapons, beautiful maps and unpredictable PvPvE encounters. Steam showed 81% positive English-language reviews from 202,228 reviews and 71% positive recent reviews from 5,926 reviews when accessed on October 16, 2026.

These figures indicate broad approval, but they do not answer the solo question by themselves. A positive review can reflect multiplayer cooperation, combat variety or long-term progression that may matter less to someone who avoids human encounters. The useful signal is that solo play was described as more peaceful and that the game remains playable and forgiving when a run goes badly; the unresolved issue is whether you personally enjoy the remaining PvP uncertainty.

Who should buy ARC Raiders as a solo player?

Buy now if these statements describe you

  • You like extraction games where each run has a different risk-and-reward calculation.
  • You are comfortable being online even when you enter alone.
  • You enjoy crafting, repairing, upgrading gear and completing repeatable quests.
  • You want substantial machine combat rather than a game built only around player-versus-player fights.
  • You can accept that another Raider may cooperate, ignore you or attack you.
  • You value atmospheric maps and exploration as much as a linear story.
  • You are purchasing during the October 13–20 PvE test and want to try the calmer mode while it is available.

Wait or skip if these statements describe you

  • You require a true offline mode or a guaranteed single-player campaign.
  • You do not want another player to be able to interrupt a run.
  • You want a permanent PvE-only ruleset and would be disappointed if the temporary test ends.
  • You dislike live-service progression that asks you to repeat the extraction loop.
  • You expect every failed attempt to preserve all of the equipment and loot you carried.
  • You are on PlayStation but do not want to maintain the required online subscription.
  • You want a one-and-done story with a defined ending rather than an evolving online game.

A practical solo-player decision framework

Use these questions in order before purchasing:

  1. Do you need offline play? If yes, do not buy ARC Raiders for that purpose. It is online-only.
  2. Can you tolerate possible PvP? If the answer is no, the standard experience is a poor fit. The temporary PvE toggle should be treated as a trial window, not a permanent guarantee.
  3. Do crafting and extraction motivate you? If gathering resources, improving gear and deciding when to leave sound rewarding, the solo loop has the right foundation.
  4. Are you comfortable with variable outcomes? Some raids may be peaceful; others may end abruptly because of a machine or another player. Progress can continue after failure, but a specific haul can still be lost.
  5. Does the current price match how often you will replay it? Compare the current regional edition price with your expected hours, and check platform subscription costs separately.

If you answer yes to the first question about extraction and crafting, yes to accepting online uncertainty and no to requiring an offline campaign, ARC Raiders is a reasonable solo purchase. If you fail the offline or PvP-tolerance test, waiting for confirmed long-term mode changes is safer than buying on the hope that the beta toggle becomes permanent.

Tips for getting the best solo experience

Start with a clear purpose for each run

Because a raid can offer loot, quests and machine encounters at the same time, decide what matters most before you leave Speranza. A focused objective helps you recognize when the run has already delivered enough value and reduces the temptation to remain exposed simply because another item might be available.

Separate peaceful encounters from guaranteed safety

The “don’t shoot” understanding described in PC Gamer’s review shows that communication and restraint can work. Treat it as a momentary agreement, not a rule enforced by the game. Keep evaluating the environment, especially when valuable loot or extraction is involved.

Use the forgiving progression model to learn

Since XP and resources can still progress after a failed extraction, use early runs to learn how machines, routes and other players affect your decisions. The goal is not to eliminate every risk immediately; it is to understand which risks are worth taking for the progression you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try the PvE toggle if it is still active

During the October 13–20 beta, the toggle is the lowest-pressure way to learn the surface loop. Use it to understand crafting needs, machine behavior and extraction routines. Before relying on it as your permanent play style, verify what mode is available after the test period.

Final buying verdict

ARC Raiders is worth buying for a mostly solo player who wants an online extraction adventure rather than an offline campaign. Its solo-friendly qualities are real: you can deploy alone, machine combat and scavenging remain meaningful, progression includes crafting and upgrades, and a failed extraction does not necessarily erase all XP and resources. The game can also produce calmer matches in which you see nobody or reach a temporary peaceful understanding with another Raider.

The decisive drawback is equally real: you are still in a multiplayer-only environment, and PvP can appear at the worst possible moment. The October 13–20, 2026 PvE Toggle Beta Test makes the current experience more attractive, but there is no established permanent PvE-only mode beyond that window. Buy if you enjoy tension you cannot fully control; wait or skip if your definition of solo requires offline play or guaranteed safety.
