Is Antivirus Software Necessary in 2026?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Windows 11 users, antivirus protection is necessary; buying a separate antivirus subscription usually is not. Windows includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and Microsoft says users do not need another real-time antivirus product alongside its security software. Macs also have built-in malware defenses. The decision is whether you need a paid product’s extra features—not whether every computer needs a second antivirus.

Do Windows 11 users need antivirus software?

Yes, they need malware protection, but Windows 11 already includes it. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows, and Microsoft says it turns on automatically when another security product is absent or has expired. Microsoft Support says its security software protects against malware, spyware, adware, and other unwanted software, and that users do not need another real-time antivirus or antispyware product alongside it. Microsoft’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ also advises against running multiple real-time products together, because they can affect performance or interfere with updates.

This distinction matters: antivirus protection should be active, but paying for a second real-time antivirus is not automatically necessary. An on-demand scanner is different: it runs when you request or schedule a scan rather than continuously alongside Defender.

How well did Microsoft Defender perform in recent tests?

In AV-TEST’s March–April 2026 Windows 11 evaluation, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 received 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. AV-TEST assessed 14 home-user products during those two months, using default settings and current publicly available versions; its methodology allowed real-world threats and cloud updates. Antivirus Cleaner For Android BSafe VPN
  • Android Security & protection
  • Daily Virus Database checkup and updates
  • Scan Apps and Files
  • System Cleaner Integrated
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Those scores describe one product version under a specific test setup and period. They are not a probability of avoiding infection, a guarantee for every computer, or a prediction of protection against every future threat. AV-TEST’s separate May–June 2026 Windows 11 home-user results evaluated 16 products, including Bitdefender Total Security, across protection, performance, and usability. A product’s appearance in that test does not by itself show that it is necessary or the best choice for you.

Does a Mac need a separate antivirus?

Not by default. macOS includes several layers of malware defense: Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect. Apple describes XProtect as built-in antivirus technology that detects and removes malware, with signatures that update automatically. Apple’s macOS security guide explains these protections.

ESET Mobile Security & Antivirus
  • Payment Protection – lets you to shop and bank safely online
  • Proactive Anti-Theft – powerful features to help protect your phone, and find it if it goes missing:
  • Anti-Phishing – uses the ESET malware database to identify scam websites and messages
  • Call Filter – block calls from specified numbers, contacts and unknown numbers
  • Antivirus – protection against malware: intercepts threats and cleans them from your device

Built-in defenses reduce the case for buying another tool automatically; they do not mean Macs are immune to malware. Consider an additional product only if you have a specific need that it addresses, and check how it interacts with macOS’s existing protections.

When might a paid antivirus suite be worth considering?

A separate suite can make sense when you want a particular capability or management option beyond the built-in protection. Evaluate the product on evidence and on features you will actually use, rather than assuming a paid subscription is inherently safer.

  • - Notifies you of harmful apps with the option to remove them immediately
  • - Online virus definition updates to ensure that you always have the latest version available
  • - Extremely low battery usage
  • Independent results: Compare protection, performance, and usability scores from tests such as AV-TEST’s; check the test period and product version.
  • Useful extras: Decide whether the suite offers a feature or management capability you need, rather than paying for a long feature list you will not use.
  • Devices and platforms: Confirm current support for your devices, operating systems, and the number of devices covered before subscribing.
  • Compatibility: Do not install a second real-time antivirus beside Microsoft’s protection without accounting for Microsoft’s guidance. Follow the product vendor’s current setup instructions.

For example, Bitdefender Total Security is listed among the products in AV-TEST’s May–June 2026 Windows 11 results. That establishes that it was evaluated, not that you need to buy it or that its current editions will suit your devices.

What about Android and iPhone?

The evidence cited here supports conclusions about Windows and macOS, not a current recommendation for Android or iPhone. Do not assume mobile devices work exactly like Windows PCs or Macs. A mobile-specific answer needs current guidance for the particular operating system and the protection features or app under consideration.
