It can be—but the answer depends on what you will pay, whether you will finish, how much you borrow, and which work you want to do. A business degree is not a guarantee of a management job or a particular salary. Compare specific programs using their net price, completion and debt outcomes, and results for graduates in your intended major and location.
What the available numbers do—and do not—say
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures based on Census Bureau American Community Survey data show that workers with a business degree had a median annual wage of $75,000 in 2023, compared with $70,000 for workers across all degree fields. These are wages for workers who hold the degree, not starting salaries, and the comparison does not show that the degree caused the difference. BLS: Field of degree—Business.
The same 2023 data show that 55% of business-degree holders worked in occupations that typically require at least a bachelor’s degree, compared with 62% of degree holders across all fields. Among employed people with business degrees, 25% worked in management and 23% in business and financial operations. Others worked in sales (12%), office and administrative support (9%), computer and mathematical occupations (6%), or other occupational groups (25%). These figures describe a varied workforce, not a placement promise for a particular major or college.
There is substantial work in related occupation groups: BLS counted more than 24 million jobs in business and financial operations and management occupations in 2023 and projected about 1.7 million additional jobs in those groups from 2023 to 2033. The projected growth rate for all occupations was 4.0%. These are occupation-wide projections, not a forecast for every business graduate or local job market. BLS’s 2023 median annual wages were $79,050 for business and financial operations occupations and $116,880 for management occupations, compared with $48,060 for all occupations. These are medians for people working in those occupations—not salaries for new business graduates. Management roles commonly require experience, and the wage data exclude self-employed workers.
1. What will you actually pay, and how long will finishing take?
Start with the aid-adjusted net price, not the published sticker price. Net price accounts for grants and scholarships that do not have to be repaid; it is different from tuition or the total published cost of attendance. Ask each college for an estimate based on your circumstances, then compare the same cost categories across schools.
Include the likely time to completion in your calculation. A program that looks less expensive per year may cost more overall if you need additional semesters. Check the degree map for required courses, course availability, transfer-credit rules, and whether required classes are offered often enough for you to stay on schedule. Treat an advertised graduation timeline as a plan to verify, not a guarantee that you will finish then.

Federal Student Aid recommends weighing net cost alongside graduation, debt, and typical earnings when choosing a college. Federal Student Aid: 4 Things to Consider in Choosing a College or Career School.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A degree only has the value you can realize if you complete it. Review the institution’s graduation rate and ask how the figure is defined: rates may cover a specific student group or time window and may not predict your individual chance of graduating. Where available, look for outcomes by program or major rather than relying only on a college-wide number.
Estimate how much you would need to borrow to cover the full expected time to graduation, not just the first year. Include federal and private borrowing separately, and compare the expected monthly payment after school with plausible entry-level earnings in your target field. A repayment estimate is more useful than debt totals alone, but it is still a forecast: earnings, employment, interest, and repayment circumstances can vary.

Use College Scorecard and the college’s own disclosures to examine net cost, completion, debt, and typical earnings. Check the definitions, cohort years, and program coverage behind each figure before comparing institutions; missing or broad institution-level data should not be mistaken for a program-specific result.
3. Which jobs do you want, and what do they require?
“Business” can mean accounting, finance, marketing, business administration, analysis, and other specialties across industries. Choose a few job titles that interest you, then check what employers and occupational sources say those roles require. Some business and financial operations or management occupations typically require at least a bachelor’s degree, sometimes in a specific field. Others place considerable weight on relevant experience, training, certification, or licensing.

A bachelor’s degree may be a common entry requirement for an occupation without being a sufficient credential for a senior or managerial position. If a role requires a license or a particular certification, confirm that the program prepares students for it and whether additional exams, experience, or costs are involved.

Also consider whether the work itself suits you. A degree’s broad title does not tell you whether its coursework, day-to-day tasks, or preferred career paths match your interests. Compare the actual curriculum and opportunities for relevant experience—such as internships or applied projects—with the work you hope to do.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. What happens to graduates of this school and major?
Seek employment and earnings results for the specific institution and major, where available. Federal Student Aid points students to College Scorecard for school comparisons, while the Census Bureau’s Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes (PSEO) program reports employment and earnings by degree level, major, institution, and state for participating partners. Coverage is not universal, so first confirm that your school and program appear in the data. U.S. Census Bureau: Post-Secondary Employment Outcomes data.
Before comparing results, check who is included, when outcomes were measured, and whether the data identify graduates from your major or combine several programs. Consider geography and industry too: earnings for graduates who stay in one labor market may not translate to another, and outcomes can reflect prior experience as well as education. If a school shares its own career report, ask for the response rate, survey period, job and salary definitions, and the share of graduates whose outcomes are unknown.

Historical figures are useful only with their dates and populations attached. For example, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that in 2018, 25- to 29-year-olds with a bachelor’s degree in business management and administration had median annual earnings of $50,600—the same as the median for all bachelor’s degree holders in that age group, with no measurable difference. That older, age-specific comparison is not directly interchangeable with BLS’s 2023 figures for business-degree holders across ages and fields. NCES: Employment Outcomes of Bachelor’s Degree Holders.
5. How does the degree compare with your realistic alternatives?
Compare the program with options you would genuinely pursue: another college, a lower-cost transfer route, a different major, a shorter credential, or entering work and gaining experience. Use the same measures for each: total net cost through completion, time required, likely borrowing and repayment, preparation for your target occupation, and outcomes for comparable graduates.
A business degree may make sense when the program is affordable for you, you have a credible path to finishing, and its curriculum and graduate outcomes align with work you want. It may be a weaker financial choice if the net cost requires substantial borrowing, completion is uncertain, or your target job does not require the degree and a less costly route can provide the needed skills or experience. There is no universal salary premium or payback period that settles the decision for every student.
Quick Recap
- Write down two or three target occupations and verify their actual education and credential requirements.
- Request aid-adjusted cost estimates and a term-by-term completion plan from each school.
- Compare graduation, borrowing, repayment, and major-specific employment or earnings data using matching definitions and years.
- Ask colleges to explain gaps in their outcomes data and how much of the evidence is specific to your intended program.
