Yes—if the specific RTX 4090 offer is competitively priced and your workload benefits from its 24 GB of VRAM. It remains a top-tier 4K gaming card and a capable GPU for video editing, 3D rendering and other creator work. It is not automatically a good buy in 2026, however: newer cards can be faster in some applications, while the 4090’s 450 W power target, three-slot size and uncertain market pricing raise the cost of ownership. Judge the exact card, seller, warranty and return policy against current RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 offers and benchmarks for the applications you actually use.

What the RTX 4090 still offers

The GeForce RTX 4090 remains an unusually capable GPU. NVIDIA lists 16,384 CUDA cores, a 2.52 GHz boost clock and 24 GB of GDDR6X memory. Its large memory pool is valuable for high-resolution textures, large 3D scenes, complex timelines and other projects that exceed the capacity of a smaller card. The specifications below come from NVIDIA’s product page; partner-board implementations can differ.

Specification RTX 4090 reference figure Why it matters
GPU memory 24 GB GDDR6X More room for demanding games, high-resolution assets and large creator projects
CUDA cores 16,384 Indicates substantial parallel-processing capacity, but does not predict every application’s speed
Boost clock 2.52 GHz Reference value; factory-overclocked partner cards may differ
Total graphics power 450 W Requires a robust power supply, suitable cables and strong case airflow
Average gaming power 315 W Manufacturer figure, not a universal draw for every game or board
Recommended system power 850 W Check PSU quality and the exact partner card rather than treating 850 W as an automatic guarantee
Reference dimensions 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, three slots Measure case clearance and account for neighboring expansion slots
Video features DLSS 3.5, two eighth-generation NVENC encoders and AV1 encoding Useful for supported games and video workflows; verify current application and driver support
Maximum listed display support 4K at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz with DSC Display capability depends on the monitor, cable and software configuration

NVIDIA’s specifications are the appropriate baseline, but a board partner can use a different cooler, connector arrangement, length or factory power limit. Always use the exact model number when checking fit and power requirements.

Gaming: still a high-end 4K option

For gaming, the 4090’s case is strongest when you want very high frame rates at 4K, use demanding ray-traced settings, or need enough VRAM for unusually detailed texture packs and mods. It can also make sense for high-refresh 1440p gaming when the goal is to keep a GPU for many years, although the value of that extra headroom depends on the games and monitor you own.

Read benchmark labels carefully

Compare results at your target resolution and settings, and separate native rendering from upscaling and frame generation. NVIDIA’s own 4K comparison with the RTX 3090 Ti uses DLSS Performance Mode and Frame Generation for RTX 40-series cards. That chart demonstrates a feature-enabled experience, not an independent, current-generation average. Treat it as a manufacturer test and use an independent suite for a purchase decision.

Tom’s Hardware’s GPU hierarchy is a useful starting point because it is updated over time, but its averages depend on the tested games, drivers, CPU, resolution and settings. Open the live methodology and latest update before relying on a precise percentage. A card that leads one rasterization suite can have a smaller advantage in ray tracing, or vice versa.

When 24 GB changes the decision

  • Large texture packs, high-resolution mods and future games can use more memory than mainstream cards provide.
  • At 4K, avoiding memory overflow can matter more than a small difference in average frame rate.
  • Frame-rate comparisons are incomplete if one card is swapping data because it has run out of VRAM while another still fits the workload.

VRAM is not a guarantee of longer useful life. A newer GPU with a different architecture can still be faster despite having less memory, and game-engine behavior varies. Check tests for the titles and settings you care about rather than buying on capacity alone.

Creative work: performance depends on the application

There is no single “creative performance” number. Video editing, GPU effects, 3D rendering, compositing, photo processing and AI-assisted tools stress different parts of a GPU. The RTX 4090’s 24 GB can prevent capacity limits, while a newer card may complete a particular compute task faster.

Premiere Pro

In Puget Systems’ RTX 5090 content-creation testing, the RTX 5090 was about 9% faster overall than the RTX 4090 in Premiere Pro. That is the result of that review’s projects, software versions and test setup, not a guaranteed nine-percent improvement in every timeline. Your codec mix, effects, proxies, storage and CPU can change the outcome. If your work is mostly editing and playback, a 9% GPU lead may not justify a large price premium over a well-priced 4090.

Blender GPU rendering

The same Puget review measured the RTX 5090 at a 35% advantage over the 4090 in its Blender GPU-rendering test. That is a much larger difference and can matter when you render repeatedly for paid work. Confirm that your renderer, plug-ins and scenes match the tested path: an application that uses a different engine or relies on CPU processing will not necessarily show the same gain.

Other creator workloads

  • 3D scenes and texture-heavy projects: the 4090’s 24 GB may allow a scene to render without reducing texture resolution or splitting it into smaller jobs.
  • Video encoding: the card includes two eighth-generation NVENC encoders and AV1 encoding. Check whether your editor supports the desired encoder, codec and hardware-accelerated effects in its current release.
  • AI and GPU compute: memory capacity, supported frameworks and application optimization can matter as much as raw gaming benchmarks. Verify compatibility with the exact software stack you use.
  • High-resolution displays: NVIDIA lists support up to 4K at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression, but the monitor, cable and application must support the same mode.

TechRadar also judged the RTX 5090 the overall winner in its comparison, with much of the advantage attributed to 3D rendering. That conclusion is consistent with the larger Blender gap but should not be turned into a blanket claim about every creative application. Read the full comparison alongside application-specific tests.

Power, cables and case fit can erase a bargain

The reference RTX 4090 is a physically large, power-hungry card. NVIDIA lists 450 W total graphics power, 315 W average gaming power and an 850 W recommended system power. The 850 W figure assumes a suitable system; it does not mean every inexpensive 850 W unit is safe or that a heavily overclocked partner model needs no additional margin.

Check the power path

  1. Identify the exact board model and read its installation guide.
  2. Confirm that your PSU is a quality unit with enough continuous capacity and the required protections.
  3. Use three separate PCIe 8-pin cables with the supplied adapter, or a PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for 450 W or more when the card and PSU support it.
  4. Seat the connector fully and avoid sharp bends immediately at the plug. Follow the board and PSU maker’s cable guidance.
  5. After installation, monitor stability under a sustained game or render. Sudden shutdowns, black screens or connector heat require stopping and investigating, not simply increasing software power limits.

Measure the case before ordering

NVIDIA’s reference dimensions are 304 mm in length, 137 mm in width and three slots. A partner card may be longer, thicker or use a different connector position. Measure from the rear expansion bracket to front fans, radiators, drive cages and cable-bend space. A three-slot card can block adjacent PCIe slots even when its length fits.

Price is the deciding variable in 2026

The RTX 4090 has no single “worth it” price. A US price comparison recorded a lowest listed price of $3,995 on October 9, 2026. That is one volatile price-tracker observation, not a typical street price, a verified retailer offer or a global figure. Shipping, sales tax, card condition, seller reputation and warranty can change the real cost substantially.

PC Gamer’s October 8 price-watch coverage also described high RTX 50-series prices, which can make a 4090 look attractive by comparison. Conversely, if an RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 is close in total cost and delivers a meaningful gain in your workload, the older card’s value falls. Compare checkout totals rather than headline prices.

Tom’s Hardware reported on October 10, 2026 that NVIDIA had reportedly halted consumer RTX 5090 processor sales, attributing the claim to an unknown-source factory notice. NVIDIA had not officially confirmed that report. It is a reminder that supply rumors can move asking prices, not evidence of current availability or a reason to buy any particular card.

Price or offer condition How to interpret a 4090 purchase
Clearly below comparable new alternatives, with a reliable seller and warranty Strong case if your games or applications use its performance or 24 GB memory
Similar price to a newer card that wins your target benchmark Prefer the newer card unless the 4090’s memory capacity is essential
Used card with a small discount and weak return protection Risk may outweigh the savings; require inspection and a testable return period
Very high price justified only by scarcity Wait, compare alternatives and avoid treating an asking price as fair value

How to compare an RTX 4090 with RTX 5080 and RTX 5090

Because no universal price, specification set or performance average applies to every current model, a responsible comparison uses the exact listings and your workload. Use this checklist before choosing:

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Total cost What is the delivered price after tax and shipping? Is the card new, refurbished or used?
Gaming performance What do independent tests show at your resolution and settings? Are DLSS, upscaling or frame generation enabled?
Creator performance What happens in your named application and workload? Are the test projects, renderer and software versions comparable?
VRAM Will your games, scenes or timelines fit without reducing quality or splitting jobs?
Power and cooling Does your PSU meet the board’s requirement, and can your case cool it quietly?
Physical compatibility Do length, width, slot thickness and connector clearance fit your case and motherboard?
Protection Who is the seller, how long is the return window, and is the warranty transferable?

For context, the tested RTX 5090 lead was about 9% in Puget’s overall Premiere Pro result and 35% in its Blender GPU-rendering result. Those figures help identify where a newer card may repay its premium; they are not a substitute for testing your own projects.

A practical decision framework

Buy the RTX 4090 when all of these are true

  • The actual offer is meaningfully better than comparable RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 options after tax and shipping.
  • You play demanding 4K titles or use scenes and assets that benefit from 24 GB of VRAM.
  • Your PSU, cables, case and cooling can support a 450 W, three-slot-class card.
  • The seller provides a credible warranty and a return period long enough to verify stability.
  • Your key applications do not show a newer-card advantage large enough to repay the price difference.

Choose a newer card instead when

  • Your primary workload resembles the Blender test where the RTX 5090 was 35% faster.
  • A newer card is close in price and wins the independent benchmarks for your games or software.
  • You need lower power, a smaller physical design or newer platform features offered by the alternative.
  • The 4090 listing is used, lacks proof of purchase or has restrictive returns while a new alternative has full protection.

Wait or keep your current GPU when

  • The 4090 price is driven by a single inflated listing rather than several credible offers.
  • Your monitor is below 4K and your current card already meets your frame-rate target.
  • Your creative applications are CPU-, storage- or software-limited, so a GPU upgrade would not address the bottleneck.

Buying a used RTX 4090 safely

A used card can offer better value, but the risk is specific to the listing rather than a published failure rate. Before paying, request the exact model, clear photos of the PCB shroud and power connector, proof of purchase, remaining warranty terms and confirmation that the warranty can transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the model’s length, slot thickness, power connector and manufacturer power recommendation.
  2. Inspect for damaged fins, missing screws, corrosion, repaired connectors or signs of disassembly.
  3. Confirm that the seller accepts returns long enough for a full-load test.
  4. During the return period, run the games or creator workloads you actually use and watch for crashes, visual artifacts, abnormal temperatures or fan behavior.
  5. Keep all packaging and records until the return window and warranty status are clear.

Do not assume that a listing is safe merely because it powers on. A short desktop test may not reveal instability that appears during a long render or a demanding 4K session.

Bottom line for gamers and creators

The RTX 4090 is still a high-end performer, and its 24 GB of GDDR6X remains a meaningful advantage for memory-heavy games and creator projects. Its purchase case in 2026 is conditional, not automatic. Start with the live, delivered price and the seller’s protection; then compare independent results for your exact games, Premiere Pro timelines, Blender scenes or other applications. If the 4090 is substantially cheaper and your workload values its memory, it can be an excellent buy. If a newer card costs about the same and wins the tests that matter to you—especially GPU rendering—the newer option is the more rational investment.
