It is an additional way to present an identity credential in places that support it. You may still need the plastic card, including during some law-enforcement encounters, and acceptance is never universal.
Before leaving your card at home, verify four things: your issuing jurisdiction supports Wallet IDs, the exact business or checkpoint accepts them, your situation does not involve an official request for the physical credential, and your state’s current rules allow you to rely on the digital presentation for that use.

What an Apple Wallet driver’s license actually is
An Apple Wallet driver’s license or state ID is a digital presentation of a credential issued by a participating state or jurisdiction. It does not create a new license, change the issuing state’s rules, or cancel the physical card. During enrollment, Apple’s California launch explanation said users scan their existing physical license or ID and submit the information for verification by the issuing state. The Wallet record therefore depends on an already issued credential and the state’s approval.

The practical distinction is important: Wallet can make an accepted ID available through an iPhone or Apple Watch, but it does not turn every place that accepts a card into a place that accepts a phone. Apple describes use at select TSA checkpoints, businesses, venues and in apps. “Select” means acceptance depends on the particular organization, location and purpose.

Apple’s direct warning about the physical card
Apple Support, in “Add your driving licence to Apple Wallet,” states: “ID in Apple Wallet is not a replacement for a physical ID, which may still be needed (e.g. for use with law enforcement).” That is the clearest answer to the title. Treat the Wallet ID as an additional presentation option, not as permission to discard or universally leave the card behind.
The warning also covers situations that are not obvious in advance. A business may accept a Wallet ID for age verification but not for another transaction. A venue may support it at one entrance while another entrance lacks the necessary reader or staff procedure. An authority may require the physical credential even if the phone can display a valid digital ID.
Where a Wallet ID can be used
Wallet presentment is selective. Apple identifies three broad categories of supported use:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Participating TSA checkpoints: some airport checkpoints can read an ID in Wallet, but airport and checkpoint acceptance must be confirmed before travel.
- Businesses and venues: participating organizations may accept the digital ID for a stated purpose, such as proving age or identity.
- Supported apps: an app can request identity information through Apple’s Wallet ID process where that app and jurisdiction support the feature.
Do not infer acceptance from the fact that a company accepts Apple Pay, contactless payments or another digital credential. Payment support and identity-document support are separate systems. Ask the exact location whether it accepts an Apple Wallet driver’s license for the transaction you intend to make.

Airport travel has its own rules
TSA maintains an acceptable-identification page listing physical state-issued driver’s licenses and other government-issued credentials. TSA says its list can change without notice. That means a Wallet ID should not be treated as a blanket substitute for the identification listed for every airport trip.
Before going to the airport:
- Check TSA’s current acceptable-identification guidance.
- Confirm that your departure airport has a checkpoint that accepts IDs in Apple Wallet.
- Allow for the possibility that your checkpoint, lane or operating conditions differ from another airport’s.
- Carry the physical license unless the current TSA and checkpoint guidance clearly supports your planned presentation and you are comfortable with the backup risk.
A checkpoint’s ability to process a digital ID is a location-specific operational capability, not a nationwide promise. Recheck the information close to travel because TSA’s published list and airport procedures can change.
Can you rely on it during a traffic stop?
The available Apple guidance establishes that a physical ID may still be needed for law enforcement. It does not establish one universal rule for every state when a driver is stopped while driving. Driver-credential and traffic-stop requirements are set by the issuing jurisdiction and can differ.
Check your state department of motor vehicles or equivalent authority for the current requirement that applies when operating a vehicle. Do not assume that an officer must accept a phone-based presentation merely because the state offers a Wallet ID. If the rule or the officer requires the physical credential, the Wallet display does not remove that obligation.

Is Apple Wallet ID available in your jurisdiction?
Availability is jurisdiction-dependent. In a November 2025 announcement, Apple reported that adding a driver’s license or state ID to Wallet was live in 12 states and Puerto Rico. That is an Apple-reported snapshot from that date, not a government count and not a guaranteed 2026 total. The number of participating jurisdictions, eligible residents and supported use cases can change.
Look for the add-ID option in Wallet and check Apple’s current availability information for your state or territory. If your jurisdiction is not supported, you cannot create a state-issued Wallet ID through Apple’s process, regardless of which iPhone or Apple Watch you own.
How enrollment works
Enrollment starts with the physical credential. Apple’s California launch explanation describes a process in which the user scans the driver’s license or ID and submits it for verification by the issuing state. The exact screens can vary by jurisdiction and software version, but the essential sequence is:
- Open the Wallet app and begin the flow to add a driver’s license or state ID.
- Scan the existing physical license when prompted.
- Complete the identity checks requested by Apple and the issuing state.
- Submit the information for state verification.
- Wait for approval before treating the Wallet record as an issued digital presentation.
Scanning the card is not merely a way to make a picture of it. The issuing state must verify the credential. A photograph saved in Photos, a scan stored in Files or a screenshot of a license is not the same thing as an ID issued through Wallet.

Wallet ID versus physical card
| Question | Apple Wallet ID | Physical license |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A digital presentation of an existing, state-issued credential. | The original card issued by the state. |
| Where is it accepted? | Only at participating checkpoints, businesses, venues and apps that support the feature. | Where the organization or authority accepts the physical credential under its rules. |
| Can it be used everywhere the card is used? | No. Apple explicitly says it is not a replacement for physical ID. | Acceptance still depends on the law and the organization, but it does not depend on a phone reader or Wallet support. |
| How is it created? | Scan the existing license and submit it for issuing-state verification. | Issued directly by the state through its normal licensing process. |
| What about law enforcement? | Apple says the physical ID may still be needed, including for law enforcement. | It is the credential an authority may request under the issuing state’s rules. |
| What about airports? | Usable only at participating TSA checkpoints and where current TSA guidance permits it. | Physical state-issued licenses appear on TSA’s acceptable-identification list, which TSA says can change. |
A practical decision test before leaving the card at home
Use this four-question check for each outing rather than making a permanent assumption about Wallet IDs.
- Where will you show identification? List every likely stop: airport security, a venue, a hotel, a rental counter, a government office, a business or a traffic stop.
- Does that exact location accept Apple Wallet IDs? Confirm with the location, not just the company’s general website or another branch.
- Does your issuing jurisdiction support the feature? A compatible device cannot overcome a state or territory that has not enabled the program.
- Could an official require the physical credential? If the use involves law enforcement, driving enforcement or another government request, follow the issuing authority’s current rule and heed Apple’s warning.
If any answer is uncertain, carry the physical card. The digital option can still be useful as a second way to present identification, but uncertainty is precisely when the backup matters.
Common situations and the safer choice
Flying from an unfamiliar airport
Check the current TSA identification page and the departure checkpoint’s information. A Wallet ID may work at a participating checkpoint, but the physical license remains the dependable fallback when acceptance is unclear or conditions change.
Entering a participating venue
Ask whether the venue accepts an ID in Apple Wallet for your specific purpose. Acceptance for age verification does not automatically establish acceptance for another form of identification or at every entrance.
Best Value
Using an app that requests identity
The app and issuing jurisdiction must support the Wallet ID process. Follow the app’s request and review what information it asks to receive. The existence of a Wallet ID does not make every app capable of accepting it.
Driving in your home state
Check the state’s current driver-credential rule before relying on Wallet during a stop. Apple’s documentation does not promise that every state treats the digital presentation as sufficient proof while driving.
What can go wrong
- The add-ID option is missing: your jurisdiction may not support Wallet IDs, or the feature may not be available for your credential.
- Verification does not complete: the issuing state has not approved the enrollment, or the submitted information does not pass its checks. Continue carrying the physical card while the issue is unresolved.
- A location refuses the Wallet ID: acceptance is selective. Ask whether another approved form of identification is required and use the physical license if you have it.
- An airport’s policy has changed: TSA says its acceptable-ID list can change without notice. Recheck guidance before each trip rather than relying on a previous successful experience.
- Your phone or watch is unavailable: a dead battery, damaged device or access problem can prevent presentation. The physical credential avoids dependence on the device.
How to keep your decision current
Apple’s examples of participating places and its state count are time-sensitive. TSA’s acceptable-ID list is also subject to change. Recheck Apple’s current Wallet guidance, TSA’s current identification page and your issuing jurisdiction’s requirements whenever you plan to rely on the digital ID for a consequential trip or official interaction.
The most accurate mental model is “digital option plus physical backup.” Wallet can reduce the number of times you need to remove a card at a participating location, but it does not replace the card’s legal or practical role in every setting.
