Is an AI Financial Adviser Safe to Use? Accuracy, Privacy and Oversight

An AI financial adviser is not automatically safe or unsafe because it uses AI. The key is to identify what the service actually does: manage or recommend investments, provide conversational answers, or offer general financial information. In the U.S., some investment advice is subject to securities-law obligations, but those rules do not guarantee accurate answers or investment gains. Before sharing data or acting on a recommendation, check the service’s oversight, information practices, costs, conflicts and access to human help.

First, identify what kind of service it is

“AI financial adviser” is a broad label, not a regulatory category. A brokerage app’s chatbot, a digital investment adviser and a budgeting tool may use similar technology while doing very different things. The distinctions matter because the applicable obligations and risks depend on the provider’s status and activities.

Service type What it does What to check
Digital or internet investment adviser Provides investment advice through an online interactive service. SEC adviser requirements may apply depending on the firm’s status and activities. Check the firm’s registration and the scope of the advisory service. The SEC’s amended internet-adviser exemption applies to firms relying on that particular exemption, not to every financial chatbot or information tool.
Robo-adviser Uses algorithms and information about a client to recommend or manage investments. It may operate as an investment adviser, but the label alone does not establish its registration or obligations. Find out whether it recommends investments, places trades, or only provides information; then check registration, fees, human access and how it uses your financial profile.
Generative financial chatbot Responds conversationally to questions about money or financial products. It may be an information feature rather than an investment-advisory service. Check whether answers are personalized advice, whether chat content is retained or shared, and whether a person can review consequential answers. CFPB research on consumer-finance chatbots warns about potential inaccuracy and sensitive information in chat logs; it is not a performance test of robo-advisers.

For a U.S. firm, verify its status and services rather than inferring them from product names or claims such as “AI-powered.” Gary Gensler, then SEC Chair, warned in March 2024 that unsupported AI claims by financial intermediaries or public companies may raise securities-law issues. A claim to use AI is not evidence that the service is more accurate, more capable or better supervised.

Can an AI adviser give accurate, suitable advice?

There is no verified, broadly applicable accuracy rate or comparative performance ranking for AI financial advisers in the official material covered here. The SEC staff’s care-obligation bulletin describes what broker-dealers and investment advisers should consider when making recommendations or providing advice; it does not certify an AI model or publish a benchmark for its accuracy.

Under that staff guidance, firms need to understand the potential risks, rewards and costs of an investment or strategy, understand the individual retail investor’s profile, and have a reasonable basis to conclude that the recommendation or advice is in that investor’s best interest. Relevant profile information can include:

  • Financial situation, needs, assets and debts
  • Age and tax status
  • Investment time horizon and need for liquidity
  • Risk tolerance and investment experience
  • Objectives and goals

That makes the quality and freshness of the information a service uses important. A recommendation based on a wrong balance, missing debt, changed goal or outdated risk profile may not fit your circumstances. Check what information the service asks for, how it handles gaps or conflicting answers, and whether you can inspect and correct your profile. Update it when your situation changes.

For a conversational chatbot, a fluent answer is not proof that the information is correct or tailored to you. The CFPB’s consumer-finance chatbot report warns that generative systems can provide inaccurate financial information. That finding concerns conversational chatbots in consumer finance; it should not be treated as an error rate for investment-management algorithms. If a chatbot cannot explain the basis for an answer, verify the underlying facts independently instead of treating the response as a personalized investment plan.

Is it safe to link bank or investment accounts?

Account linking can expose sensitive information, and access may be different from permission to move money. Before connecting an account, establish exactly what the app can see or do. CFPB consumer guidance on sharing financial data recommends checking what data is accessed, how often it is accessed, how long it is stored, whether the service can make payments or move funds, how to dispute errors, and how to stop access or request deletion.

  • Scope: Which accounts and categories of information will the service access?
  • Frequency and purpose: How often does it retrieve data, and what does it use the information for?
  • Permissions: Can it only read balances and transactions, or can it initiate payments, trades or transfers?
  • Retention and sharing: Does the privacy notice say whether chat content or account data is stored, how long it is kept, and whether it is shared with third parties?
  • Control and recourse: How can you revoke access, request deletion, dispute incorrect data and contact the provider?

Regulation P is a U.S. privacy baseline for covered financial institutions and activities. The CFPB’s regulation resource describes privacy-notice requirements and limits on certain disclosures of nonpublic personal information to nonaffiliated third parties, including limits on redisclosure and reuse, subject to opt-out rights and exceptions. It is not a universal guarantee against a breach, and coverage depends on the institution and activity. Read the provider’s own privacy notice and account-permission terms rather than assuming every AI tool is covered in the same way.

What oversight, fees and conflicts should you look for?

Oversight is not the same as a guarantee. Applicable obligations for investment advice and recommendations remain relevant when AI is involved. In an August 13, 2024 statement, SEC Chair Gary Gensler said that providers of financial advice and recommendations remain subject to best-interest obligations whether or not their advice is based on AI. He also described a conflict risk where a platform’s optimization considers its own interests as well as the customer’s.

Ask how the provider earns money and whether its incentives could affect what it recommends. Look for advisory fees, transaction costs, referral payments, affiliated products and account-type incentives. The SEC’s 2024 Marketing Rule risk alert described observed deficiencies such as unsubstantiated material claims, misleading omissions and unfair presentations of risks, limitations or performance. An alert describes examination findings; it does not certify a particular provider. A separate SEC alert dated June 9, 2026 discusses economic incentives to recommend particular products, services or account types, along with fee disclosures and calculations. Use those issues as prompts to inspect claims and costs, not as proof of wrongdoing by any one service.

Regulatory status also depends on the firm and pathway. In March 2024, the SEC amended the internet-adviser exemption. Firms relying on that exemption must maintain an operational interactive website and provide digital advisory services exclusively through it; the SEC set March 31, 2025 as the compliance date for the amended requirements. This is one registration pathway, not a rule that makes every chatbot or financial-information app an adviser.

The SEC formally withdrew its predictive-data-analytics proposal on June 12, 2025, saying it did not intend to issue a final rule on that proposal and would issue a new proposal if it pursued future action in those areas. Do not treat the withdrawn 2023 proposal as an active or final AI-specific rule; other applicable obligations and laws are separate.

How to evaluate a service before relying on it

  1. Identify its role. Determine whether it is a registered investment adviser, a brokerage feature, a conversational chatbot or an educational tool. Confirm whether it can recommend investments, trade, transfer funds or only provide information.
  2. Review its permissions and privacy terms. Record what data and accounts it accesses, how often, for what purposes, whether chat content is retained or shared, and how to revoke access or request deletion.
  3. Check your financial profile. Make sure the information used for recommendations reflects your current goals, debts, time horizon, liquidity needs, experience and risk tolerance. Find out how to correct errors and update changed circumstances.
  4. Challenge the recommendation. Look for its assumptions, risks, costs and alternatives. You should be able to understand and independently check the explanation rather than relying on a confident tone.
  5. Trace the incentives. Find out how the service gets paid, what fees apply, and whether affiliated products, referrals or account types could influence its suggestions.
  6. Know where to go if something goes wrong. Confirm that you can reach the provider, dispute incorrect account data, report unauthorized access and escalate a consequential recommendation to a qualified person.

For complex circumstances or a consequential decision about taxes, debt, retirement or investing, human professional advice may be useful. Check the person’s credentials, applicable registration, services, fees and conflicts too; human involvement by itself does not guarantee a good recommendation.
