The Samsung QN900F is a better fit if you prefer inputs on the TV and prioritize lower input lag. Both are 2025 US models, not new 2026 launches. Before paying an 8K premium, weigh their size and room advantages against the limited supply of native 8K content and the possibility that upscaled video may look worse than it does on a 4K set.
Is an 8K TV worth buying in 2026?
For most viewers, 8K is a specialized upgrade rather than a straightforward improvement. An 8K panel has a resolution of 7680 × 4320 pixels—four times the pixel count of 4K UHD—but having more pixels does not mean most programs arrive in native 8K.

RTINGS says native 8K material remains scarce, citing some YouTube videos and a handful of PS5 Pro games. Samsung also identifies YouTube and Samsung TV Plus as platforms with some 8K content, while acknowledging that 8K content is less available than 4K. These examples do not establish broad native 8K catalogs on mainstream film and TV streaming services. Most viewing will therefore be upscaled, and RTINGS cautions that upscaled content may look worse than on a 4K TV.

The 8K case is strongest when you want a very large screen, sit close enough to appreciate its fine detail, and have a specific source of native 8K material. RTINGS cautions that the benefit is largely lost on smaller screens and suggests considering 4K for smaller setups. There is no universal viewing-distance cutoff established by these sources, so compare screen size and your actual seating position rather than relying on a single distance rule.

The 8K Association’s examples and its June 18, 2026 announcement of the Strato K player as compatible and certified for native 8K content show that a specialized ecosystem exists. They do not establish that a dedicated player or a broad library is necessary or affordable for typical TV buyers.
Which 8K TV is best for your setup?
RTINGS’ September 11, 2026 guide names the QN990F its best 8K TV and the QN900F its best mid-range 8K TV. Those are the guide’s tested rankings, not a claim that either model is the best choice for every room, budget, or source device.

Choose the QN990F for bright rooms and flexible placement
The QN990F is the more compelling fit if glare is a concern, you want the inputs separated from the display, or you are considering a very large set. Its listed 98-inch size extends beyond the QN900F’s range. The separate Wireless One Connect box can make some installations easier, but the wireless setup can have higher input lag; gamers should not assume every connection performs alike.
Choose the QN900F for direct connections and lower input lag
The QN900F keeps inputs on the TV and, according to RTINGS, has lower input lag across its inputs. It is worth considering if you value direct access to connections and do not need the QN990F’s wireless box or its reported 8K/120Hz gaming path. Its reported gaming modes are 8K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz.

- Screen size and seating: Consider whether a large panel suits the room and whether you sit close enough to benefit from the extra resolution. The cited guidance does not support a universal distance threshold.
- Room brightness and reflections: The QN990F is the stronger match when bright-room performance is a priority in RTINGS’ assessment. Both models have matte finishes, but the QN900F is described as dimmer overall.
- Gaming connection: Confirm the exact input, source device, resolution, refresh rate, and VRR combination. The QN990F’s reported 8K/120Hz with VRR uses its separate Micro-HDMI input; connection method matters for input lag.
- Content you will actually watch: Identify the native 8K material available to you. If most viewing is 4K or lower resolution, the experience depends on upscaling rather than native 8K detail.
- Current price and availability: Compare live listings for the size you want. Samsung’s published figures above are US launch MSRPs from March 2025, not today’s market prices.
What are the QN990F and QN900F?
Samsung Electronics America announced both models as Neo QLED 8K televisions on March 26, 2025. Samsung lists an NQ8 AI Gen3 processor and 8K AI Upscaling Pro for the QN990F, with a 65–98-inch range. For the QN900F, Samsung lists 8K AI Upscaling and sizes from 65 to 85 inches. Samsung’s US product page gives the resolution as 7680 × 4320 and shows 65-, 75-, and 85-inch selections for both model families; RTINGS lists the QN990F in 98 inches as well.
RTINGS refreshed its 8K recommendations on September 11, 2026, but does not provide a live price or stock feed for each market. Its rankings and performance observations are attributed to its guide; they are not personal testing claims by this article.
Should you consider a 4K TV instead?
Compare a large 4K TV with an 8K option at the size and seating distance you want. If native 8K material is not part of your viewing plans, the central 8K advantage may not matter much, while the upscaling caveat still applies. Tom’s Guide’s January 1, 2026 analysis also identifies high cost and the lack of native 8K content as barriers, and reports that Samsung was the only major TV maker to release a new 8K TV in 2025. That is the publication’s market reporting, not an audited industry statistic.
For a buyer committed to 8K, the QN990F is the clearest lead choice in the reviewed 2026 rankings; the QN900F makes sense when direct inputs and lower input lag matter more. For anyone still deciding whether 8K is worthwhile, start with screen size, room conditions, gaming needs, available content, and current local prices—not the resolution label alone.
