What Among the Trolls is
Among the Trolls is a first-person narrative adventure with survival elements. You play Anna, who travels from the United States to Finland to visit her grandfather. His cabin is abandoned when she arrives, and finding him becomes a journey through wilderness, supernatural threats and stories rooted in Finnish mythology and the Kalevala tradition.
The game’s design brings several systems together:

Crafting covers practical equipment as well as weapons. The system is therefore tied to both traversal and protection: you gather materials, turn them into useful items, and use those items to reach places or deal with threats. The developers have also described craftable bridges connecting smaller islands. Some bridges are ordinary and others are magical, making construction a way to unlock routes and story progress rather than only a method of decorating a base.
This is an important distinction from survival games where building is mostly optional. In Among the Trolls, at least some construction projects are part of how the narrative world opens up. A player who enjoys turning collected materials into visible changes in the environment has a clear reason to engage with the system.
Meet characters and explore curated story sections
The demo development notes describe curated story sections, encounters with characters and a progression designed around authored moments. That suggests a more directed experience than a procedural survival sandbox. Exploration still matters, but the game appears to use the wilderness to stage discoveries and encounters rather than to generate an infinite stream of interchangeable locations.
The demo was deliberately limited. It offered only a taste of the supernatural, and the developers said the biggest mythological encounters were being held for the fuller game. Consequently, the demo cannot be used to estimate the complete range of creatures, set pieces or late-game story developments. It is better understood as an introduction to the systems and tone.

The developers chose a direct 1.0 launch instead of Early Access because they did not want players to receive only a “slice” of the story. Their stated goal was a polished, cohesive and complete narrative experience from day one. That is a meaningful promise about the intended structure: buyers receive the main release rather than a work-in-progress segment awaiting the rest of its campaign.

However, “complete” does not mean “endless.” The available material does not provide a reliable playtime figure, map size, number of chapters, number of creatures or amount of optional content. No honest estimate can be supplied from the current information. The safest expectation is a self-contained story adventure whose content is organized around authored progression, not a game designed to occupy you indefinitely through procedural generation.

If your main reason for buying a survival game is to build a shared base, divide tasks with friends or fight creatures as a group, this is not the right fit in its current form.
