Is AMD Catching Up to Nvidia in AI? What the Evidence Shows

AMD is closing parts of the AI accelerator gap, but the available evidence does not show that it has closed the gap overall. Its Instinct MI350 generation and ROCm software have made progress visible in selected tests. The results still depend on the model, precision, software stack, system size and benchmark round, so no single figure establishes that AMD and Nvidia are interchangeable across AI workloads.

What does “closing the AI gap” mean?

There is no single AI performance score that settles the AMD–Nvidia comparison. A useful comparison must hold the workload and conditions in view: training or inference, model and precision, number of accelerators, system design, software versions, benchmark round and division. Product specifications matter, but they do not by themselves predict end-to-end model performance.

The evidence here spans different benchmark rounds and vendor-described tests. It supports a conclusion of progress in particular areas, not a universal ranking or a single percentage showing how far apart the companies are.

What do the MI350 and ROCm add?

MI350 is data-center accelerator hardware

AMD positions the Instinct MI350 family for data-center AI, machine learning and high-performance computing—not as a conventional desktop graphics card. AMD’s product and ROCm architecture materials identify the family with CDNA 4 and describe its package and memory design. Those specifications help explain what the hardware is built for; they are not a substitute for workload-level results.

Software and the full system matter

Accelerator performance depends on more than the chip. Frameworks, runtimes, kernels, software maturity and the way GPUs are connected and deployed can change the result. AMD’s ROCm 7.0 post illustrates why a headline comparison needs its configuration attached: AMD says its Performance Labs tested eight MI355X GPUs running DeepSeek R1 on SGLang with a pre-release ROCm build against eight Nvidia Blackwell B200 GPUs using CUDA 12.8.

That is a defined vendor-reported test setup, not proof that the same result applies to another model, runtime, software release or deployment. AMD’s ROCm 7.0 post does not provide a performance figure from this test that would support a broader head-to-head conclusion.

What do the benchmark results establish?

AMD’s MLPerf Training v5.1 claims

In its 2025 account of MLPerf Training v5.1, AMD described MI355X results as near parity with Nvidia’s latest FP8-based submissions and reported up to 2.8× faster training than its previous generation. Both are AMD’s characterizations of results in that specific benchmark round. “Up to” describes a best-case claim, not a typical speedup, and near parity in selected submissions does not establish parity across all workloads.

How to read the MLPerf context

MLCommons describes its Training suite as full-system tests that stress models, software and hardware across machine-learning applications. Its November 2025 release for Training v5.1 listed 20 submitting organizations, including AMD and Nvidia. This makes the benchmark useful for comparing submitted systems under defined workloads, but a fair comparison still requires matching the exact workload, division, system size and round.

  • Blazing‑Fast Engine Clock: Delivers a boost clock of up to 3290 MHz and a game clock of 2700 MHz out of the box, providing the raw power for smooth, high‑framerate gameplay.
  • 16GB GDDR6 Memory on 128‑Bit Bus: Equipped with 16GB of high‑speed GDDR6 memory running at 20 Gbps, offering ample capacity and bandwidth for modern game textures and creative applications.

Nvidia’s summary of MLPerf v6.0 reports its Blackwell submissions across training tasks and scales, and says it retrieved the results from MLCommons in June 2026. That is Nvidia’s presentation of benchmark data. It is not directly comparable to AMD’s v5.1 characterization as though both were entries from the same round. For an exact matchup, consult the corresponding MLCommons result entries rather than comparing vendor summary headlines.

Which evidence should matter for a real deployment?

Start with the work the system must do, then compare configurations that actually match. A relevant evaluation should establish:

  • AMD RDNA 4 Architecture: RX 9070 GPU with 56 CUs, 3584 stream processors, 3rd gen RT and 2nd gen AI accelerators – built for 1440p/4K gaming.
  • Factory Overclocked Performance: Boost clock up to 2520 MHz, game clock 2070 MHz – delivers smooth, high-framerate gaming out of the box.
  • 16GB GDDR6 on 256-Bit Bus: High-speed 20 Gbps memory provides exceptional bandwidth for 4K textures, ray tracing, and demanding workloads.
  • Workload: the model, task and whether the goal is training or inference.
  • Quality and precision: the precision used and the output-quality target; an apparent speed advantage is not meaningful if the quality target differs.
  • System scale: accelerator count and the scale-up or scale-out configuration.
  • Software: the framework, runtime and software versions, including whether a tested build is generally available or pre-release.
  • Benchmark context: the benchmark round, division and exact result entry.
  • Deployment fit: availability in the required format and location, plus the full system or cloud cost.

The evidence summarized here does not establish an apples-to-apples total-cost comparison or confirm current MI350 availability by cloud region, instance or price. AMD announced in 2025 that MI350 broad availability was planned for the second half of that year and described deployments with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure; that dated announcement is not a current inventory or pricing check.

So, has AMD closed the gap?

Not on the evidence available here. AMD has made credible, measurable progress in selected workloads and benchmark submissions, and its MI350 hardware and ROCm stack are part of that effort. But AMD’s vendor-reported results, MLPerf entries from different rounds and Nvidia’s own benchmark summary do not add up to a single, independent finding of overall parity. The practical answer is workload-specific: compare the exact systems and software you intend to use.
