AltspaceVR was historically free to play on Steam, but it is not available there now. Steam classified the app as “Free To Play,” so there was no upfront game price or required subscription to download it while the listing was active. SteamDB now records the app as retired and unavailable, and Microsoft shut the AltspaceVR service down on March 10, 2023. In practical terms, the current cost is not a sale price: you cannot buy, download, or play the service through Steam today.
The short answer: free then, unavailable now
There are two different answers depending on when you mean. During its Steam availability, AltspaceVR cost $0 to download. Steam’s support metadata described it as a free-to-play massively multiplayer simulation with SteamVR support and listed March 31, 2016 as its release date. “Free To Play” meant that Steam did not require an upfront game purchase, subscription, or credit card merely to download and play.

That historical price does not describe the service’s current status. SteamDB’s current records mark AltspaceVR as retired, with the app no longer available on the Steam store. Its package metadata lists the billing type as “Free on Demand” but the status as “Unavailable.” Those labels describe a removed free product, not a playable free game.
Microsoft announced that AltspaceVR would shut down on March 10, 2023. Because the online service itself ended, reinstalling an old copy or finding an old store reference does not restore access. There is no current Steam purchase to make and no supported AltspaceVR service to launch.

What “free to play” meant for AltspaceVR
No upfront game price
When AltspaceVR was listed on Steam, the free-to-play designation meant the base download did not have a normal purchase price. You did not need to pay a one-time fee before entering the application. That is the answer behind older search results, videos, and forum posts that say “AltspaceVR is free.” They refer to the period when the Steam listing and service were operating.
No Steam subscription or credit card requirement
Steam’s general free-to-play policy says games in this category can be downloaded without a subscription or credit card. That policy explains the access model, but it does not promise that every free-to-play title will remain online indefinitely. It also does not prevent a supported game from offering optional purchases. In AltspaceVR’s case, the verified historical classification establishes the absence of an upfront price; it does not establish a particular catalog of optional items or transactions.
Free did not mean permanently available
A zero-dollar price and an active service are separate questions. AltspaceVR required an operating online platform and servers in addition to a Steam installation. Once Microsoft ended the service, the historical free price became irrelevant to access. A store page, package entry, or archived installer can preserve the fact that the app was free without making the app usable now.

| Event | What the record shows | What it means for players |
|---|---|---|
| March 31, 2016 | Steam metadata lists AltspaceVR’s release date and SteamVR support. | The app entered Steam as a virtual-reality title that could be obtained without an upfront game price. |
| While the listing was active | Steam classified AltspaceVR as “Free To Play.” | Downloading and playing did not require buying the base game; Steam’s policy generally did not require a subscription or credit card. |
| Before March 10, 2023 | Microsoft announced the service would close. | Players had a published end date rather than an indefinite guarantee of continued operation. |
| March 10, 2023 | Microsoft shut down AltspaceVR. | The hosted service that powered social spaces and accounts ended. |
| Current SteamDB status | The app is recorded as retired, no longer available on the Steam store; package status is “Unavailable.” | There is no current Steam download or playable service, even though historical metadata still identifies it as free. |
Can you still download AltspaceVR from Steam?
No. The current store status is retired and unavailable, so a normal Steam user cannot obtain AltspaceVR from its store page. If you search for it and find an old app ID, cached page, or discussion that still displays “Free To Play,” treat that as historical metadata rather than a live installation option.

Steam can retain records for applications after distribution ends. A record may continue to show the original release date, genre, platform support, or billing type because those fields describe what the product was. The “Unavailable” status is the field that matters for present access. It indicates that the package is not offered for a normal download.
What if the app is already in your library?
Having an old entry in a Steam library would not recreate the online service. The shutdown was a service-level decision, not merely a delisting from the store. An installed client may fail to authenticate, connect to social spaces, or load the network features that made AltspaceVR function. There is no current supported route described by the available status records for turning an old installation into a working service.
What if you find an installer elsewhere?
An archived installer is not the same as an active game. AltspaceVR’s operation depended on Microsoft’s hosted service, which ended on March 10, 2023. A file obtained outside Steam therefore cannot change the official availability status or bring the servers back. It can also create security and account risks, so an unofficial download should not be treated as an official replacement.
How much did AltspaceVR cost?
| Question | Answer | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Historical Steam price | $0 upfront; listed as free to play | This describes the period when the Steam listing and service were active. |
| Required subscription | None indicated by Steam’s free-to-play model | Steam’s policy says free-to-play downloads do not require a subscription or credit card. |
| Current purchase price | Not applicable | The app is retired and unavailable, so there is no current purchase transaction. |
| Current playable access | Unavailable | Microsoft shut the service down on March 10, 2023. |
| Optional purchases | Not established for AltspaceVR by the available records | Steam’s general policy allows optional purchases in some free-to-play games, but the historical classification alone does not document specific AltspaceVR items. |
This distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: “It was free” is accurate as a historical price statement, while “It is free now” is inaccurate if it implies that you can still download and play it. The current practical cost is $0 because there is no purchase available, but the equally important current access answer is also zero: there is no functioning official service to use.

Why AltspaceVR became unavailable
Microsoft announced that AltspaceVR would shut down on March 10, 2023. The announcement said the company would redirect resources toward Microsoft Mesh, describing Mesh as a new platform for connection and collaboration and initially emphasizing workplaces. Microsoft’s statement, reproduced by TechCrunch, said: “We look forward to what is to come, including our launch of Microsoft Mesh, a new platform for connection and collaboration, starting by enabling workplaces around the world.”
The announcement explains why searching for a current price is misleading. AltspaceVR was not converted into a paid Steam product after the free period, nor was a new purchase price introduced. The service was retired. Once the shutdown date passed, the social worlds, account services, and other online infrastructure associated with AltspaceVR were no longer offered as a supported product.
Delisting versus shutdown
A delisting can remove a game from a store while leaving an offline mode or existing servers available. AltspaceVR’s case involved both an unavailable Steam listing and a shutdown of the service. That combination means neither a new Steam download nor normal online play should be expected. The shutdown is the decisive reason an old free-to-play client cannot serve as a current substitute.

How to interpret old answers and videos
Older guides often answer only the pricing part of the question. They may correctly say that AltspaceVR was free on Steam, mention SteamVR support, and describe the app as a social virtual-reality world. Those details can be historically correct while still being unsuitable instructions for a new player in 2026.

Use the date and the source context when evaluating an old result:
- A page that discusses the March 31, 2016 release is describing the original Steam launch, not current availability.
- A screenshot showing a “Free To Play” button records the former pricing model, not an active store transaction.
- A guide that tells you to enter AltspaceVR spaces assumes the service infrastructure existed at the time it was written.
- A current status marked “Retired” or “Unavailable” outweighs an older description that still calls the app free.
This approach also explains why search engines can show apparently contradictory answers. One result answers “Did AltspaceVR ever cost money?” while another answers “Can I play it now?” The first answer is no upfront price; the second is no, because the product and service are no longer available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What SteamVR support tells you—and what it does not
Steam’s historical metadata identified AltspaceVR as supporting SteamVR. That tells you the application was designed for the SteamVR ecosystem during its active period. It does not mean every modern headset remains compatible, that a SteamVR runtime can connect to the service, or that installing SteamVR today will restore AltspaceVR.
Platform support is a product attribute; it is not a guarantee of continued server operation. The service shutdown supersedes the old headset information. You can use the SteamVR detail to understand how AltspaceVR was distributed historically, but not as evidence of current playability.

A quick checklist for evaluating an AltspaceVR listing
If you encounter an old listing, key, video, or download claim, check these points before spending money or installing software:
- Store status: look for a current availability indicator rather than relying on the words “free to play” in an archived description.
- Service status: remember that Microsoft’s shutdown date was March 10, 2023.
- Purchase claims: a seller cannot create an official current purchase for an app recorded as retired and unavailable.
- Online requirements: an old client cannot provide social spaces if the official hosted service has ended.
- Source date: separate launch-era information from a present-day status report.
These checks are especially important because a zero-dollar historical price can make an unofficial download appear harmless. The authoritative status is that AltspaceVR is no longer distributed through Steam and the service has shut down.
What should a former player expect now?
Former users should regard AltspaceVR as a discontinued service rather than a temporarily hidden Steam game. There is no current price comparison to make between a free edition and a paid edition: the official product is not being sold in either form. There is also no supported reinstall path that restores the original online experience.
If you still have screenshots, recordings, or memories from AltspaceVR, those remain personal archives of the service. They do not indicate that the original worlds are accessible. If you are looking for a current social-VR experience, evaluate an active service separately for its present platform support, account requirements, upfront price, optional purchases, and whether it is aimed at consumers or workplace collaboration. Those are new-product decisions, not a way to obtain AltspaceVR.
Bottom line
AltspaceVR was free to play on Steam when it was active: there was no upfront game price, and Steam’s free-to-play model did not require a subscription or credit card to download. SteamDB now lists the app as retired and unavailable, and Microsoft ended the service on March 10, 2023. Therefore, you cannot currently download, purchase, or play AltspaceVR through Steam. The historical cost was $0; the current official availability is none.
