It is usually reasonable for inexpensive, non-critical items when you use a reputable seller, pay with a protected method, keep communication on-platform and preserve evidence. It is a poor fit for counterfeit-sensitive, safety-critical, expensive, time-sensitive or warranty-dependent purchases.
That distinction matters more in 2026. On July 20, 2026, the European Commission fined AliExpress €550 million for failing to adequately assess and mitigate risks involving illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products under the Digital Services Act. The decision identifies a serious platform-level compliance problem; it does not mean every AliExpress order is fraudulent or dangerous.

What AliExpress is—and what it is not
AliExpress is a marketplace connecting buyers with business sellers, rather than a retailer that directly sells every item. Its privacy policy identifies AliExpress E-Commerce One Pte. Ltd. as the contracting entity for registered U.S. buyers and describes third-party providers involved in payments, customs support and risk control: AliExpress privacy policy.

- AliExpress, the platform hosting the transaction;
- an independent store or business seller;
- a manufacturer or brand named in the listing;
- a shipping carrier and possibly a separate fulfillment warehouse; and
- your card issuer or payment provider.
AliExpress being a real company does not establish that a particular store is authorized, that a branded product is genuine, or that a listing’s specifications are accurate.
“Safe” has five separate meanings
Payment safety
Use the genuine AliExpress domain or official app. Never move payment to WhatsApp, email, Telegram, a bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards or an external “refund” link. The FTC recommends credit cards for online purchases because they may provide a dispute route for non-delivery, damage, wrong goods or fraud: FTC online-shopping guidance.
A card dispute is separate from AliExpress’s process and is subject to your issuer’s deadlines; it is not an automatic refund.
Account and data safety
- Use a unique password and enable available multifactor or account-security controls.
- Ignore unsolicited customs, delivery and refund links; open the app or type the official address yourself.
- Never give a seller a one-time code, full card details or unnecessary identity documents.
- Keep messages and promises inside AliExpress so there is a written record.
The privacy policy explains that information may be shared with affiliates and service providers and accessed across jurisdictions. Review the policy for your region rather than assuming data is either completely private or inherently unsafe.
Product safety
Payment security cannot make a dangerous product safe. Use extra caution with mains-powered chargers and power strips, batteries, heaters, protective equipment, automotive or motorcycle parts, cosmetics, supplements, medical devices, lasers, children’s products and anything displaying a certification mark that you cannot verify. The European Commission’s 2026 action specifically concerned illegal, unsafe and counterfeit-product risks: Commission decision.
Delivery and customs
International orders can be delayed, mis-tracked, incorrectly declared, assessed for duties or seized. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it does not mediate the overseas sales contract or generally track ordinary consumer packages; contact the seller and carrier first: CBP package guidance.

Refund and warranty safety
AliExpress buyer protection, a seller’s “free returns” label, a manufacturer warranty, local statutory rights and a card chargeback are different remedies. A seller-only warranty may be difficult to enforce across borders.

Why the current regulatory record matters
The European Commission made AliExpress commitments binding in June 2025, covering product risks, complaint handling, advertising and recommender transparency: Commission announcement. On July 20, 2026, it imposed the €550 million fine cited above. Treat that as evidence to raise your scrutiny—not as proof that every listing is unsafe.
Regional rights also differ. AliExpress’s EU/EEA/UK terms, updated June 30, 2026 and effective July 15, 2026, describe a 14-day withdrawal right and a minimum two-year legal-conformity guarantee subject to applicable rules and conditions. The same terms state that statutory rights are separate from the platform buyer-protection plan: EU/EEA/UK platform terms. These rights should not be generalized to U.S. shoppers.
U.S. customs costs changed
CBP guidance says duty-free de minimis treatment for shipments valued at or below $800 was suspended effective August 29, 2025, subject to exceptions: CBP de minimis guidance. Treatment can depend on origin, transport method, classification, declared value and current exemptions. Inspect the checkout total and carrier notices; do not assume that taxes, duties or brokerage fees are included.
CBP explains that imported goods may face duties, taxes, fees, restrictions, holds or seizure, and that non-postal shipments require appropriate entry processing: CBP import guidance.
Is buyer protection reliable?
It is a conditional, evidence-based dispute process—not an unconditional money-back guarantee. Coverage depends on the order, seller, transaction and applicable policy. Deadlines, photos or video, tracking records, packaging evidence and sometimes a return are important. A refund may be partial, and a return can involve shipping and customs costs. AliExpress’s terms say buyer protection applies to covered transactions and may depend on seller participation: platform terms.

Protect a claim from the moment it arrives
- Do not confirm receipt until you have inspected and tested the item.
- Photograph or video the unopened package, label, seals and contents, especially for expensive or fragile goods.
- Save the listing, selected variant, specifications, seller messages, invoice, tracking history and payment record.
- Test promptly within the order’s displayed protection or return period.
- Open the order’s return, refund or dispute workflow before its displayed deadline. Choose the accurate reason.
- Upload clear evidence and follow the platform’s requested format.
- Do not let a seller’s promise to “fix it later” make the deadline expire, and do not return an item without platform instructions or a tracked method.
- If the result is inadequate, contact your card issuer or payment provider promptly about its separate dispute deadline.
Menu names and deadlines vary by country and change over time, so use the current order page rather than relying on an old walkthrough.
How to choose a lower-risk seller and listing
Seller checks
- Look at store age, completed orders and recent reviews for the exact product and variant.
- Prioritize reviews with buyer photographs or video; look for repeated complaints.
- Ask a specific technical question and judge whether the answer is consistent with the listing.
- Check for verifiable brand authorization, a local or regional return address and the actual shipping origin.
- Be skeptical of copied photographs, vague specifications and implausibly low prices.
Listing red flags
- Brand names inserted into generic titles or “official” claims without authorization;
- multiple unrelated products or unclear variant pricing in one listing;
- specifications that conflict between title, images and description;
- reviews showing a different product;
- safety marks shown only as artwork;
- a request to confirm receipt, close a dispute or pay extra outside checkout.
An unusually low price may reflect a generic product, old or refurbished stock, missing accessories, a regional version, false specifications or a counterfeit. It is a reason to investigate, not proof of fraud.

Electronics and batteries
Fake capacity ratings, counterfeit chips, used goods sold as new, incorrect voltage, missing certifications and incompatible firmware are common failure modes. Generic low-voltage accessories may be acceptable when failure is merely inconvenient. Avoid unverified mains equipment, power supplies, chargers and batteries; compare specifications with the manufacturer’s documentation.

Ingredient accuracy, contamination, storage, labeling and regulatory compliance are difficult to establish remotely. Prefer a regulated local retailer or an authorized seller.
Children’s, automotive and protective products
Do not rely solely on a listing’s certification claim for toys, baby products, helmets, airbags, brake parts, child seats or protective equipment. A failure could cause injury, so use a regulated local or authorized source.
Clothing and small household goods
These are generally lower-stakes, but expect inaccurate sizing, different materials, color variation, poor finish and costly international returns.
What to do when an order goes wrong
The item never arrives
- Check tracking on the carrier’s official site and compare the delivery scan with your address.
- Contact the seller through AliExpress.
- Open the non-delivery claim before the displayed deadline.
- If told it is “held by customs,” request the carrier name and documentation; do not assume CBP has the package.
The item is wrong, damaged or defective
Preserve exterior packaging, labels, serial numbers and model numbers. Compare the delivered item with the saved listing, submit the evidence through the platform and escalate to your card issuer while its deadline remains open.
The item appears counterfeit
Stop using a potentially unsafe product. Save screenshots before the listing changes, compare serial numbers and packaging with the manufacturer’s information, ask the brand whether the seller is authorized, report the listing and contact your payment provider. CBP warns that counterfeit goods can create health and safety risks and that online reviews may be manipulated: CBP counterfeit guidance.
A seller or message requests extra money
Unexpected shipping, customs, insurance or release fees are a possible scam until independently verified through the official carrier or platform. Never use a link or phone number supplied only in an unsolicited message. The FTC also warns against gift cards, wire transfers and cryptocurrency as payment methods: FTC payment-scam guidance.
When another retailer is the better choice
| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast delivery, domestic returns or warranty convenience | Amazon or a local retailer | Often simpler fulfillment and returns, though third-party listings still require scrutiny. |
| Used, collectible or hard-to-find goods | eBay | Seller feedback and buyer protection help, but condition and authenticity remain your responsibility. |
| Lowest price on generic, non-critical goods | AliExpress | Accept longer delivery, variable quality and potentially difficult returns. |
| Branded, regulated or safety-critical goods | Brand-direct or authorized retailer | Better chance of verified authenticity, compliance, local returns and enforceable warranty support. |
| Low-price marketplace alternatives | Temu | Comparable marketplace trade-offs; it is not automatically a product-safety solution. |
A practical decision checklist
- Affordability: Can you absorb a total loss?
- Safety: Could failure injure someone?
- Authenticity: Is it branded or “official”?
- Seller evidence: Are there recent, relevant buyer photos?
- Returns: Is the address local and the process clear?
- Delivery: Can you tolerate customs and delay?
- Warranty: Is support local and enforceable?
- Payment: Can you use a credit card without moving off-platform?
If several answers are unfavorable, pay the premium for an authorized or local retailer. The European Commission advises reading return policies and using secure payment methods with fraud protection and dispute resolution: European Commission consumer guidance.
The Bottom Line
Use AliExpress for low-cost, non-critical purchases when the savings justify seller, delivery and return risk. Choose a local or authorized retailer when authenticity, product safety, fast delivery, customs certainty, warranty service or a reliable return matters more than the lowest price.
