Is AI-Generated Content Allowed in World of Warcraft Fan Videos? What Blizzard’s Policy Says

Blizzard’s published Video Policy does not specifically allow or ban generative AI. An AI-assisted World of Warcraft fan video therefore has to qualify under the ordinary fan-video rules: Blizzard content is generally for noncommercial use, viewers must be able to watch without paying an access fee, and the production must preserve the game’s applicable rating. You also need separate rights for every AI-generated or third-party element that appears in the finished work.

That makes the safest answer conditional rather than a simple yes or no. AI used privately to draft a script or help edit footage is a different risk from an AI voice imitating a recognizable person, an AI-generated soundtrack, or synthetic artwork shown alongside Blizzard characters. The more AI contributes to the published work, and the more money or access restrictions are involved, the more important a written review or license becomes.

What Blizzard’s Video Policy permits

Blizzard says it “strongly supports the efforts of its community members who produce community videos” using video images, footage, music, sounds, speech and other assets from Blizzard products, subject to conditions. World of Warcraft gameplay videos, machinima and similar fan productions can fit that permission when they follow those conditions.

Noncommercial use is the default

The policy’s fundamental rule is that, except for stated exceptions, use of Blizzard Content must be limited to non-commercial purposes. The policy does not create a general promise that every fan video may earn advertising revenue, sponsorship money, memberships or tips. A video can be made by a hobbyist and still raise a commercial-use question if access is sold, a sponsor is integrated, or the production is distributed as part of a paid service.

Viewing must remain free

Blizzard permits creators to distribute productions on websites and other services where viewers can freely view them. Neither the creator nor the host may force a viewer to pay a fee to watch. A pay-per-view release, subscriber-only upload or event stream behind a ticketed wall does not fit that straightforward free-viewing condition.

The production must keep the game’s rating

The policy refers to the ESRB “T” rating and comparable ratings from other rating boards. Your finished video should not turn World of Warcraft material into content that would exceed the applicable rating. This requirement applies to the final presentation, including dialogue, visuals, music, jokes, AI-generated scenes and promotional material around the video.

Blizzard can withdraw permission for a particular production

Blizzard reserves the ability to terminate the right to distribute or host a specific production without notice or liability. Any content-use license is limited to the event and methods specified in that license. Treat the policy as a permission with conditions, not as an irrevocable ownership transfer or a guarantee that a video will remain approved forever.

Why there is no simple “AI allowed” answer

The official Video Policy covered here contains no generative-AI clause. It does not name AI voice, AI art, AI music, synthetic footage, prompting or machine-generated scripts. That omission is important: it is not an AI safe harbor, but it is also not a blanket prohibition.

A February 29, 2024 Blizzard forum discussion asked about AI art, AI voice and AI music in Blizzard fan content, but it recorded no official answer. The discussion itself noted that a policy change would need to appear in official legal materials. Consequently, describe AI use as an application of the existing rules rather than as a Blizzard-approved exception.

Separate creator-side AI from AI that appears in the video

The practical risk depends on what the audience receives. Keep an audit trail of prompts, source files, licenses and edits so you can explain how each element was made.

AI used only for drafting or editing

Using an AI tool privately to brainstorm a plot, outline a machinima scene, correct captions, remove background noise or organize an edit usually leaves the published asset as your own script, recording or montage. That does not remove your responsibility for the Blizzard footage, music, dialogue and other assets, but it avoids many of the additional identity and copyright questions created by synthetic media.

Review every generated suggestion yourself. An AI draft can reproduce a protected character, lyric, quotation or someone else’s writing without giving you permission to publish it. Replace unlicensed material and keep the final script consistent with World of Warcraft’s rating.

AI-generated voice

An AI voice in a WoW machinima is not expressly addressed by the Video Policy. You need to know what voice model you used, whether its license permits publication and whether the output imitates an identifiable actor, streamer, employee or other person. A provider’s terms may restrict commercial use, redistribution, voice cloning or use that implies endorsement. Consent and publicity or personality rights can also matter when a recognizable person’s voice is reproduced.

Using a generic, properly licensed synthetic voice is easier to document than cloning a real person. Do not present a synthetic performance as an authentic statement by a Blizzard employee or another identifiable individual, and label the use when viewers could reasonably be misled.

AI-generated music and sound

Music generated for the final video must be covered by the AI provider’s license for your intended distribution. Check whether the plan grants commercial rights, whether attribution is required, and whether the provider disclaims ownership or offers limited rights to outputs. Also inspect any uploaded reference audio: submitting a copyrighted song or someone else’s performance may create a separate rights problem.

Blizzard’s own music and sounds remain Blizzard Content. Replacing them with AI music does not change the policy obligations for gameplay footage, characters, dialogue, logos or other Blizzard elements that remain in the production.

AI images, animation and footage

Synthetic art can still depict Blizzard characters, locations, logos and other protected material. The fact that an image was generated rather than copied does not automatically grant permission to use Blizzard’s intellectual property or a third party’s identity. Review prompts and outputs for trademarks, recognizable real people, copied styles, stock elements and accidental watermarks.

If AI-generated footage is composited with game capture, treat the entire production as a Blizzard fan video. The output must still be freely viewable, noncommercial by default and within the applicable rating.

Two publishing approaches, compared

Question Freely viewable, noncommercial fan video Monetized or sponsored publication
Blizzard Content Must follow the Video Policy’s conditions for gameplay, characters, music, sounds, speech, logos and other assets. The same conditions apply, but the commercial purpose may fall outside the policy’s default permission.
Access Viewers can watch without paying an access fee. Paywalls, ticketed streams or subscriber-only access require specific review; advertising and sponsorship also create a commercial-use question.
Third-party rights AI-provider, stock, voice, music and publicity rights still need to be documented. Commercial licenses may be required, and a provider’s free or personal plan may not be sufficient.
Rating Keep the final production within the applicable World of Warcraft/ESRB rating. Promotional edits, sponsor messages and thumbnails should meet the same rating expectations.
Disclosure Blizzard’s policy does not establish a general AI-disclosure rule; disclose synthetic elements when needed to avoid misleading viewers or to satisfy another service’s rules. Check sponsor, platform and AI-provider disclosure requirements in addition to Blizzard’s policy.
Approval certainty Closer to the policy’s ordinary community-video scenario, but not an AI-specific approval. Written clarification or a content-use license is prudent before publication.

Can you monetize an AI-generated WoW video on YouTube?

There is no guaranteed YouTube monetization right in the Video Policy. A video may be publicly watchable on a platform and still involve commercial activity through advertising, sponsorships, paid memberships, donations or a branded campaign. Because the policy’s default rule is noncommercial, do not assume that platform monetization is automatically covered.

Before enabling revenue, identify exactly what the money is attached to: the video itself, a sponsor integration, a paid channel, a downloadable version or a separate service. Review the current Blizzard policy, YouTube’s current creator and synthetic-media rules, the AI provider’s license and every third-party asset license. For a large channel, paid commission or unusual distribution, request written clarification from Blizzard or seek a content-use license rather than relying on an informal interpretation.

A rights checklist before you publish

  1. Inventory Blizzard material. List every piece of game capture, character, environment, logo, title, music track, sound effect, spoken line and other Blizzard asset. Note where it appears and whether it was edited or combined with AI output.
  2. Classify the AI contribution. Mark each item as creator-side assistance or audience-facing output. For the latter, record whether it is voice, music, image, animation, footage, script or another synthetic element.
  3. Read the relevant licenses. Confirm that the AI tool, stock library and any other provider permit your intended publication. Check commercial-use limits, attribution, territory, duration, redistribution, voice cloning and training-data terms where they are stated.
  4. Check identities and recognizable material. Remove unapproved real-person likenesses and voice imitations. Inspect outputs for third-party logos, characters, lyrics, melodies, quotations and copied artwork.
  5. Test the business model. Keep ordinary fan videos freely viewable. If there is advertising, sponsorship, paid access, a contest, a festival screening or another exceptional use, treat it as requiring additional review.
  6. Apply the rating test. Watch the complete cut, including AI scenes, captions, thumbnails and sponsor messages. Remove material that would push the production beyond the applicable rating.
  7. Preserve required notices. Keep Blizzard copyright and other notices where the policy or an asset license requires them. Do not imply that Blizzard officially produced, endorsed or sponsored the work.
  8. Save evidence. Retain invoices or plan details, license pages, permissions, consent records, prompts, source files and the final export. Documentation helps if a platform, rights holder or Blizzard asks how an element was made.
  9. Escalate unusual cases. Ask for written clarification or a content-use license before publishing a monetized, broadcast, contest, festival or otherwise exceptional production.

Common scenarios

“Can I use an AI voice in a WoW machinima?”

Possibly, but the Video Policy does not specifically approve it. Use a voice with publication rights, avoid cloning an identifiable person without permission, keep the machinima within the rating and satisfy the policy for all Blizzard assets. A generic licensed voice is easier to defend than an imitation presented as a real person.

“Can I use AI art for a World of Warcraft thumbnail?”

The thumbnail is part of how the production is presented. Check the generator’s terms, inspect the image for third-party material and avoid implying official Blizzard endorsement. The underlying video still has to meet the Video Policy.

“Can I replace Blizzard music with AI music?”

You still need rights to the generated track and must check the tool’s license and any reference audio used. Replacing the soundtrack does not remove obligations for the remaining Blizzard footage, characters, dialogue or logos.

“Is AI-generated WoW content against Blizzard’s fan-video rules?”

No published AI-specific ban is established by the policy covered here. Nor is there a published AI-specific permission. Compliance depends on the general conditions and on separate rights for synthetic and third-party material.

When to get written clarification

Written guidance is especially valuable when the video is sponsored, monetized at scale, locked behind payment, submitted to a contest or festival, broadcast outside ordinary online hosting, or built around extensive AI-generated characters, voices or music. Ask about the exact production, distribution method, countries, revenue model and AI elements. Keep the response with your project records, because the policy allows Blizzard to terminate the right to distribute or host a specific production.

Bottom line for creators

AI is not expressly cleared or expressly forbidden in the Blizzard Video Policy described here. The low-risk path is a freely viewable, noncommercial fan video that uses AI mainly for private drafting or editing, uses licensed synthetic assets when they appear on screen, avoids unapproved identity imitation, preserves the applicable rating and documents every permission. Monetization or unusual distribution moves the project away from the policy’s default case, so obtain current written clarification before release.
