Is Aave Stablecoin Lending Worth It When Borrowing Rates Exceed Supply Rates?

Usually not as a matched rate trade. If you supply stablecoins on Aave and borrow the same amount at a higher variable rate, the position has negative rate carry before transaction costs. It can still be rational when the borrowed funds have a separate use whose expected benefit exceeds interest, collateral risk, liquidation exposure and other costs.

“Aave stablecoin lending” can describe three different decisions: supplying stablecoins for yield, borrowing stablecoins against collateral, or supplying and borrowing in the same strategy. Evaluate those separately. Rates are specific to the asset, reserve, market, chain, utilization and governance settings, so check the exact reserve immediately before acting.

The short answer: a higher borrow rate makes the matched position lose money

Aave’s supplier yield is funded by borrower interest after the protocol’s reserve factor. As Aave explains, “Supplier yields are funded by borrower interest net of the reserve factor.” Because the reserve factor is retained by the protocol and the supplier and borrower rates are calculated differently, they are not expected to be identical. See the Aave V3 Overview and interest-rate strategy documentation.

For a matched amount, the basic calculation is:

net rate carry = supply APY − variable borrow APR

If that result is negative, interest alone reduces your position. Transaction fees make the result worse. A positive outcome therefore requires either a supply rate above the borrowing cost or a separate benefit from using the borrowed stablecoins.

This is not the same as saying borrowing is always a mistake. Someone may borrow to fund an activity with an expected return, meet a short-term liquidity need, or avoid selling an asset. In those cases, the relevant comparison is the benefit of the debt-financed use against all financing and collateral risks—not the supply APY by itself.

First identify which Aave strategy you mean

Supplying stablecoins only

You deposit a stablecoin into an Aave reserve and receive variable supply yield. There is no Aave debt in this position, although you still need to consider reserve liquidity, changing rates, incentives and the risks of the asset and protocol. The return is the displayed supply rate plus any applicable incentive, minus transaction costs and any loss in the stablecoin’s value relative to your chosen accounting currency.

Borrowing stablecoins against collateral

You deposit collateral and create a variable-rate debt. The borrowing rate is a financing cost, and your collateral remains exposed to price changes. Aave’s liquidation documentation states that when the health factor falls below 1, the position becomes eligible for liquidation and external liquidators can repay part of the debt in exchange for collateral. Review the collateral’s liquidation threshold and liquidation bonus before borrowing.

Supplying and borrowing at the same time

A common idea is to supply stablecoins, borrow stablecoins, and treat the difference as an interest strategy. If the borrow rate is higher than the supply rate, this is negative carry on the matched amount. It also introduces collateral and liquidation exposure if the supplied asset is being used as collateral. A rate spread cannot compensate for a liquidation event or a reserve becoming unavailable.

Why Aave rates change

Aave V3 uses a two-slope variable-rate model. Borrowing costs rise with reserve utilization up to an optimal utilization point, then rise more sharply above that point. The model is described in the Aave interest-rate strategy documentation.

Utilization is the proportion of available liquidity that is currently borrowed. As utilization approaches the optimal point, the variable borrow rate responds to demand. Above the point, the steeper second slope is designed to encourage repayment and new supply. Since supplier yield is linked to borrower interest and reserve settings, supply yield can move as utilization changes too.

Do not transfer a rate from one market to another. The same underlying stablecoin can have different parameters on different chains or Aave markets. Reserve-level settings can include supply caps, borrow caps, interest-rate parameters and other controls, as explained in the Aave reserve documentation.

Aave’s Pool reference also distinguishes variable-rate fields from deprecated stable-rate fields. Aave V3.2.0 documentation marks stable borrowing as deprecated, so treat the documented borrowing rate as variable rather than assuming a generally available fixed-rate option. See the Aave Pool reference.

What the dated USDT example does—and does not—tell you

A September 16, 2026 governance forum post from LlamaRisk gave a snapshot for Aave V3 Core USDT. It described utilization of 85.8% and a 4.02% APR variable borrow rate under the then-current interest-rate model. The post projected 4.06% APR after a proposed utilization-parameter change. The proposal projection is not evidence that the change was adopted, and none of these figures is a universal or current Aave stablecoin rate.

How to calculate whether the spread is acceptable

Use comparable rate conventions

Compare a supply APY with a borrow APR only after checking how each is quoted and over what period. APY may assume compounding; APR generally does not. If the interface presents both, record the displayed convention and date. A small apparent spread can disappear when compounding assumptions, transaction costs or incentives are included.

Calculate the matched carry

Suppose, purely as an illustration, that you supply 10,000 units at a 3% APY and borrow 10,000 units at a 5% variable APR. Ignoring compounding differences and fees, the rate gap is negative 2 percentage points, or approximately 200 units per year on the matched amount. The actual amount changes as rates and debt balances change.

For a position that is not matched, calculate each leg separately. If you supply 10,000 units but borrow 4,000, the borrowing cost applies to 4,000, not the full supply balance. Your net result also depends on what the 4,000 units do after borrowing.

Include incentives separately

Some reserves may offer incentives in addition to the displayed supply or borrow rate. Treat incentives as a separate, changeable component rather than assuming they permanently turn negative carry positive. Aave’s market-data documentation lists reserve incentives alongside rates, liquidity, utilization and caps.

Subtract transaction and exit costs

Include the cost of supplying, borrowing, repaying and withdrawing on the intended network. If you must swap assets or move between networks, include those costs as well. A spread that is only slightly positive can become negative after these one-time costs, especially for a short holding period.

Collateral and liquidation risk can dominate the rate calculation

A supplied asset can be used as collateral, but collateralization does not make the debt risk-free. The position’s health factor depends on debt, collateral value and reserve risk parameters. A falling collateral value can reduce the health factor even when the stablecoin borrow rate has not changed.

  • Health factor: monitor it continuously; below 1, the position is eligible for liquidation.
  • Liquidation threshold: determines how much borrowing capacity the collateral provides before liquidation risk becomes acute.
  • Liquidation bonus: affects the collateral discount available to liquidators and therefore the potential loss when liquidation occurs.
  • Collateral concentration: relying on one volatile collateral asset leaves the position sensitive to that asset’s price.
  • Debt-rate changes: a variable borrow rate can rise while your collateral value falls, creating a double pressure on the position.

Read the collateral and reserve parameters for the exact market in Aave’s reserve documentation and market interface before setting a borrowing amount. A conservative health factor is a risk-management choice, not a guarantee against liquidation.

A practical decision framework

Choose supply-only when your goal is relatively simple yield

If you do not need borrowed liquidity, supplying alone avoids debt-rate exposure and the liquidation risk created by borrowing against collateral. You still need to check the reserve’s liquidity, caps, incentives and changing supply rate. This is the cleanest comparison when the alternative is simply holding the stablecoin idle.

Borrow only when the use has a measurable benefit

Write down what the borrowed stablecoins will do and how you will repay them. Examples include funding a separate activity, smoothing a cash-flow gap or avoiding an asset sale. Estimate the benefit in the same time period as the variable interest cost. Proceed only if the expected benefit remains positive after interest, transaction costs, collateral risk and a plausible rate increase.

Be skeptical of leverage loops

Supplying, borrowing and resupplying can increase exposure without creating an economic edge. When the variable borrowing rate exceeds the supply rate, every additional loop adds negative carry before fees. Loops also increase debt and make health-factor management more difficult. A temporary incentive should be modeled separately and stress-tested for its expiry or reduction.

Do not treat a displayed rate as a promise

Rates are market outputs, not fixed returns. Utilization, governance changes, reserve caps and liquidity conditions can change the result. A reserve can also be paused or frozen, affecting the ability to supply or borrow. Check the status immediately before the transaction and keep a plan for repayment or unwinding.

Step-by-step: check an Aave reserve before borrowing

  1. Select the exact market: identify the network and Aave market where the transaction will occur. Do not copy parameters from another chain or deployment.
  2. Select the stablecoin reserve: verify the token contract and reserve name, not just the ticker symbol.
  3. Record live supply and borrow rates: note whether the interface labels each as APY or APR and record the time checked.
  4. Check utilization and liquidity: high utilization can precede sharper variable-rate increases; confirm that enough liquidity exists for the intended supply and repayment.
  5. Review caps and status: inspect supply caps, borrow caps and whether the reserve is paused or frozen.
  6. Inspect incentives: list them separately from base rates, including their asset, conditions and stated duration if provided.
  7. Review collateral parameters: check liquidation threshold, liquidation bonus and the projected health factor for your debt size.
  8. Stress-test the position: model a higher borrow rate, a lower collateral price and repayment delays before submitting a transaction.
  9. Set monitoring and an exit plan: decide what health-factor level or rate change will trigger repayment, collateral addition or closure.

Aave’s market-data documentation describes reserve-level supply and borrow APY, liquidity, utilization, caps, incentives and historical data. Use those fields to make the check reproducible, but treat the result as a time-specific observation.

When the answer changes from “no” to “possibly”

A negative supply-versus-borrow spread is still acceptable only when another benefit is doing the economic work. For example, if borrowed funds produce an expected return or prevent a larger cost, compare that benefit with:

  • variable interest over the expected holding period;
  • network and transaction costs;
  • the cost of repaying or unwinding the position;
  • collateral price exposure and the possibility of liquidation;
  • changes to utilization, reserve parameters, caps or incentives; and
  • the uncertainty of the expected benefit itself.

Use conservative assumptions. A projected benefit is not guaranteed, and a variable borrow rate can change independently of your original plan. If the separate use cannot be valued or monitored, the negative carry is the only clearly measurable part of the trade.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing the wrong markets

Mistake: using a rate seen for one chain or reserve to evaluate another. Correction: select the intended network, market and token contract, then read that reserve’s data.

Assuming supply and borrow rates should match

Mistake: treating the difference as an error or guaranteed arbitrage. Correction: account for the reserve factor and utilization-based model; supplier yield is funded by borrower interest net of the reserve factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring variable-rate movement

Mistake: budgeting from the rate displayed at the time of deposit. Correction: stress-test utilization-driven increases and monitor the reserve after borrowing.

Counting incentives as permanent yield

Mistake: including a temporary incentive as if it were base APY. Correction: model incentives separately and verify their current terms.

Borrowing to increase a yield that is already below the debt cost

Mistake: assuming more capital automatically creates more profit. Correction: calculate carry on each additional borrowed unit; negative spread scales losses before fees.

Waiting until the health factor is near 1

Mistake: using all available borrowing capacity. Correction: leave a buffer for collateral-price and rate changes, and define an earlier intervention level.

Bottom-line test

For a matched stablecoin supply-and-borrow position, a borrowing rate above the supply rate means negative carry and is generally not worth doing on rate spread alone. Supplying without debt may fit a yield objective; borrowing can fit a separate objective only when its expected benefit exceeds variable interest, transaction costs and collateral/liquidation risks. Check the exact reserve’s live data on the intended chain immediately before acting, because the dated USDT figures from September 16, 2026 are an illustration of changing parameters, not a current universal quote.
