Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A used Xbox or PlayStation can be worth buying if you can test the exact console, confirm it connects to the platform’s online service, and get a price that reflects its condition and lack of guaranteed support. If the seller will not allow a meaningful test, or the console cannot go online when you need online access, walk away. Compare the total cost and protections with a certified-refurbished option before deciding.
What makes a used console worth buying?
“Used” describes ownership history, not condition. One console may be clean, complete, and fully functional; another may have a failing port, unreadable disc drive, missing accessories, or no practical warranty coverage. A listing’s description and a photo cannot establish which one you are considering. The useful question is whether the specific unit passes the checks that matter to you—and whether the price accounts for any remaining risk.

Before arranging a purchase, decide what you need the console to do. Check the exact generation and model, whether you need a disc drive, the included controller and cables, the storage configuration, and whether the games you plan to play suit that setup. For example, Xbox Series S is all-digital, so it cannot play physical game discs. If you expect to use discs, verify that the model has an optical drive and test it with a game; do not rely on the console’s appearance or the seller’s description alone.
Compare the full delivered cost—not just the listing price—with a certified-refurbished console that has documented warranty or support terms. Include any missing accessories you would need to replace, plus shipping if applicable. Microsoft’s store has refurbished Xbox Series X and Series S listings that describe warranty and support, but stock and terms can change. Sony says its certified-refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. Neither fact makes every refurbished listing a better deal: verify the specific offer and compare its final price and protections with the used unit.

Before you meet or pay
Get the details in writing
- Ask for the exact model and configuration, including whether it is disc-equipped, its storage configuration, and what accessories are included.
- Request a clear view of the model and serial-number label. Microsoft’s Series X and Series S service pages identify the label location and model, which can help you check that the unit shown is the one being offered.
- Ask the seller for a continuous video showing the console powering on, displaying a game, connecting to the internet, and testing the ports, buttons, and disc drive where applicable. Sony’s PlayStation buying guide recommends asking for test video.
- Agree in advance that you can test the console before paying and decline the purchase if it fails. For a shipped purchase, check the seller’s reputation and the return terms; Sony’s guide also recommends checking the seller.
A video is useful evidence, not a substitute for inspecting the actual console. It cannot establish that the unit you receive is the same one shown, that an intermittent fault will not appear later, or that the console will connect to online services under your own inspection conditions.
Bring what you need to test it
If you are meeting in person, arrange access to a display and a known-good HDMI cable. Microsoft’s Xbox service testing guidance includes an HDMI cable and display among the standard testing tools. Bring a physical game for a disc-equipped console if you can, and allow enough time to connect to the internet and launch a game. A known-good cable helps isolate a cable problem; it does not prove that a console with a damaged HDMI port is sound.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

- Inspect the unit while it is off. Look over the casing, vents, port surrounds, included cables, and serial-number label. Note cracks, impact damage, missing labels, or signs of tampering. Sony’s buying guide advises checking for broken warranty seals or removed serial numbers. Treat a damaged or missing seal as a reason to ask about service history, not as a definitive diagnosis of the console’s condition.
- Connect it to a display and power it on. Use a known-good HDMI cable and display. Check for a stable picture, clear image, and working audio. Watch for artifacts, dropouts, a loose-feeling HDMI connection, or an image that disappears when the cable is gently moved. Microsoft’s test procedure directs technicians to verify a clear image and lists the cable and display as testing tools.
- Let it run a game. Start a game and leave it running long enough to observe whether video and audio remain stable, the fan operates, and the console avoids unexpected shutdowns. Listen for unusual fan noise and watch for signs of overheating. Sony calls out image quality and overheating in its buying guidance; Microsoft’s procedure checks fan operation and noise as well as game operation. This short check can expose problems, but it is not a guarantee against faults that only appear later.
- Use the included controller. Pair it with the console and check that it connects and responds. Test the sticks, triggers, face buttons, and shoulder buttons separately, and check charging if relevant. Microsoft’s guidance includes checking controller connection and responsiveness. Do not assume a controller works just because it is included.
- Test internet access on the console. Connect the specific unit to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and verify that it can reach the relevant platform service. If online play, downloads, or account access matter to you, treat this as a necessary check, not an optional extra. Microsoft’s Xbox service checklist tests network access; Sony advises buyers to confirm PlayStation service access.
- Test the disc drive if the model has one. Insert a game and confirm that the console reads it and that it installs or starts as expected. Check that the disc ejects. Microsoft’s testing procedure includes disc-game play where applicable, and Sony recommends checking the disc drive. A digital-only console has no disc drive to test.
- Check the other connections you plan to use. Test USB ports and any included peripherals you expect to connect. Check audio output if you will use it. Microsoft’s service procedure includes USB, peripheral, and audio checks.
- Make the purchase decision before resetting. Do not let the seller’s account or saved data be your only way to access the system during inspection. Once you are satisfied with the console, arrange for the seller to back up wanted data and factory-reset it before handover. Then confirm you can set it up with your own account.
Why the online-service check matters
A console can power on and run a local game yet still fail a requirement that matters to you: access to online play, downloads, or other platform services. Test connectivity on the actual unit during inspection. A seller’s assurance, a photo of a settings screen, or a serial number by itself is not the same as confirming service access on the console.
Sony’s PlayStation buying guide warns that “If a PlayStation product is reported lost or stolen, the product may be permanently suspended from accessing PlayStation services.” That is a specific risk Sony identifies; it does not establish how often suspensions occur. If a PlayStation cannot access services during a test, do not assume a reset or a change of account will fix it. Ask the seller to resolve the issue before purchase or decline the deal.
The available official Xbox testing guidance supports checking network access on the device. It does not establish an official serial-number lookup that a buyer can use to confirm an Xbox is clear, so do not treat a serial number as proof that online access will work. The practical check is to connect the console itself.

Warranty, returns, and refurbished alternatives
Do not assume a private sale transfers the manufacturer’s warranty. Sony’s US PlayStation buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty, while its certified-refurbished products include a warranty. Warranty terms depend on the product, region, and purchase history, so check the terms that apply to the exact unit rather than relying on a general claim in a listing.
Recommended Free Tools
Sony’s current US PS5 limited hardware warranty terms, accessed in 2026, provide a one-year period from the original purchase date for the original purchaser and are valid in the United States and Canada. Sony requires dated proof of the original purchase for service. The terms also list exclusions, including an altered or removed serial number and unauthorized service or opening. This is a US-and-Canada PS5 example, not a general warranty rule for every PlayStation model, Xbox, or country.
For a private sale, ask whether the seller has dated proof of purchase and whether any return period is offered in writing. A seller’s willingness to let you inspect the console is useful, but it is not the same as a warranty. For a shipped purchase, read the return terms before paying and establish what happens if the delivered unit differs from the one shown or fails a functional check.

The seller should back up anything they want to keep, remove any disc or USB device they are taking, and restore the console to factory settings before ownership changes. Sony recommends recording the serial number and backing up wanted data before resetting a PS4 or PS5. Resetting deletes user and game data and cannot be undone, so do not start it until the seller has saved anything they need.

Use a decision checklist, not the word “tested”
Before paying, make sure the console has passed the checks that match how you will use it. A seller saying a console is “tested” is not a description of what was tested; ask for the results that matter.
- Model: Does the exact generation and configuration suit your games and accessories?
- Picture and sound: Does the console show a stable, clear image and produce working audio?
- Game operation: Does it launch and run a game without unexpected shutdowns or obvious overheating symptoms?
- Controller: Does the included controller pair, respond, and charge as expected?
- Network: Can this console connect to the internet and the platform service you need?
- Disc drive: If present and useful to you, does it read, start or install, and eject a game?
- Ports and accessories: Do the connections and included items you expect to use work?
- Seller terms: Can you inspect the unit, and do you understand the return terms if it is shipped?
- Handover: Will the seller back up their data and reset the console before you take ownership?
- Total cost: After missing accessories and shipping, is the price compelling relative to an option with documented support?
If a required function fails, do not treat a lower price as proof that the problem is minor. Either have the seller resolve it and retest the unit, or pass. If you cannot test the console yourself, rely on a seller and return policy you are comfortable with rather than assuming the listing establishes its condition.
Is a used Xbox or PlayStation worth it?
It can be, when the seller allows inspection, the actual console passes the relevant functional and online checks, and the final price compensates for any missing warranty or return protection. A certified-refurbished model may be the safer comparison if it comes with documented support, but verify its current terms and total cost. There is no universal used-console price threshold established here, so make the decision from the exact model, test results, included items, seller terms, and protections—not a generalized claim about savings or failure rates.
