Before buying, check the exact game and edition, region restrictions, who is selling the key, the final checkout total, and the seller’s written support and refund terms. Steam says it cannot refund third-party CD key purchases.
What does “Steam key” tell you?
Steam says products sold by outside retailers may include a code for Steam registration. The packaging or delivery email should identify the item as a Steam CD key or product code. A code that is not intended for Steam can return an “Invalid Product Code” error. Steam Support explains how to register a product on Steam.

A compatible code only answers whether the code is intended to activate on Steam. It does not establish that the seller is authorized, that the key works in your region, or that Steam will handle a purchase dispute.

How safe is the site—and what happens if a key fails?
Check the specific merchant and offer rather than assuming all sites selling Steam keys are equivalent. Steam’s Subscriber Agreement recognizes authorized Valve resellers and directs buyers to those resellers with product-key questions; it also says Valve makes no representations or warranties about third-party sites. If a code will not register, Steam’s support guidance is to contact the retailer. For a key that is later revoked, Steam’s guidance for third-party purchases likewise points buyers to the seller to ask for a refund. How to compare a third-party offer with Steam
- Match the exact game and edition. Compare the same title and edition, including any bundled content, rather than treating similarly named listings as equivalent.
- Confirm Steam activation and region. Check that the offer is a Steam key and read any country or region restrictions against the location of your Steam account.
- Identify who is selling it. Distinguish a publisher- or distributor-supplied official store from a marketplace where individual third-party sellers list keys. On a marketplace, inspect the actual seller and listing, not just the marketplace brand.
- Compare the checkout total. Use the amount shown at checkout, including applicable taxes, fees, and payment charges—not only the headline price.
- Check freshness and availability. Note when the price was last checked and confirm the offer is still available before paying.
- Read the seller’s remedy terms. Look for its written refund, replacement, and support policies so you know whom to contact and what the seller says it will do if a code fails.
Steam’s own game refund policy generally allows a refund request within 14 days of purchase if the game has been played for less than two hours. That policy does not extend to an outside key purchase: Steam states, “Valve cannot provide refunds for purchases made outside of Steam (for example, CD keys or Steam wallet cards purchased from third parties).” The Steam Refunds page was last updated 23 April 2024. What price-comparison sites can—and can’t—establish
A comparison directory can help identify offers and show criteria such as store type, buyer protection, published terms, price freshness, and commercial relationships. Those labels are the directory’s own descriptions, not independent certification that every listed merchant or marketplace seller is safe. No failure rate, scam rate, or typical savings percentage is established here, so a price difference should be judged offer by offer. A lower listing price may not be the lower checkout total, and it may come with different seller support or refund terms.
