Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUsually, yes—if handheld play would let you game in places or at times when you do not use your PC. The Steam Deck is a portable companion, not a desktop performance upgrade. If you nearly always play at your desk and want better graphics or higher-resolution gaming, it may be an expensive second way to access games you already own.
What the Steam Deck adds to a gaming PC
The Deck is a self-contained portable gaming PC. Its value alongside your existing computer is the option to play on the couch, while travelling, or during short stretches away from your desk. The practical question is whether those opportunities would lead you to play more—not whether the Deck can replace a more powerful PC.

Valve lists the OLED model’s APU as a Zen 2 four-core/eight-thread CPU and RDNA 2 GPU in a 4–15W power envelope. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a performance comparison with your PC; actual desktop-versus-handheld results depend on your computer and the games you play. Valve also says docking does not improve Deck performance. (Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications; Steam Deck FAQ)

It makes sense if portability changes your habits
- You want to play away from your desk, such as on the sofa or during a trip.
- You expect to use handheld sessions often enough to justify buying a second gaming device.
- Your preferred games work well on the Deck, either installed directly or, where suitable, streamed from your PC.
It is harder to justify if your PC already suits your routine
- You mainly play at your desk and rarely want a handheld.
- Your priority is a desktop performance boost, high-resolution output, or a better experience on a large monitor.
- The cost would buy little beyond another way to access games you already play on your PC.
Check the price against the extra use you expect
Valve’s May 27, 2026 update lists the Steam Deck OLED at $789 USD for 512GB and $949 USD for 1TB. These are US-dollar prices from that dated update, not a guarantee of today’s price elsewhere. Check Valve’s store for current local pricing before you decide. (Valve Steam Deck store)
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Think of the purchase as paying for handheld access, not replacing the gaming PC you already own. If you cannot picture regular situations in which you would use the handheld, the price is difficult to justify on convenience alone.
Compare the OLED and LCD models
Valve’s current product specifications distinguish the models as follows. The battery-life figures are manufacturer estimates that vary with the content being played, not guaranteed runtimes. (Valve OLED specifications; Valve LCD specifications)

The OLED model also lists Wi-Fi 6E, USB-C display output and a microSD slot. Valve’s listed specifications make it the clearest option to compare if you want a larger HDR screen, a higher refresh-rate ceiling or one of its stated storage capacities. They do not establish how much longer either model will last in your particular games.
Check your games before buying
Do not assume that ownership on PC means every game will work as expected on the Deck. Valve says non-Steam games can be added through Proton, and that installed games can run offline unless they require a connection. Neither statement guarantees that every title, launcher or online feature will work. Check the specific games you expect to play on the Deck before spending money. (Valve Steam Deck FAQ)

Use your gaming PC as a streaming option
Steam Remote Play can connect the Deck to your gaming PC, giving you another way to access that computer’s games on a handheld screen. Valve also says the Deck can be used as a PC controller through Remote Play. This option depends on having the PC and a suitable network setup; the official information cited here does not quantify the network quality or setup each player will need. (Valve Steam Deck FAQ)

A microSD card is optional: the Deck supports microSD storage and formats cards for its filesystem. Consider one if you need more room, rather than treating it as a required purchase. A USB-C dock or hub is likewise optional for connecting a display or peripherals. Valve describes docking as similar to plugging a USB-C hub into a PC; it does not boost the Deck’s performance. Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
