It can be, if your household regularly buys fresh groceries at Sam’s Club, uses the package sizes before they spoil, and saves more on its actual shopping than the membership fee plus any extra travel or delivery costs. There is no evidence here of a universal saving or a like-for-like study showing better fresh-food quality. The practical test is to compare prices and usable quantities for groceries you already buy at nearby stores.
What a membership costs in 2026
Sam’s Club’s annual fees changed effective May 1, 2026: Club costs $60, up from $50, and Plus costs $120, up from $110, according to Axios. Plus members can earn up to $750 per year in Sam’s Cash rewards, also an increase. Treat that as a potential benefit, not an automatic grocery discount: count it only if your purchases qualify and you will use the reward.

Sam’s Club offers grocery categories including meat, bakery, deli and produce, as listed in Walmart’s FY2026 annual report. That company-level list does not establish what a particular club has in stock, how fresh its products are, or whether they are better than local alternatives.
How to work out whether the Club tier pays for itself
For the $60 annual Club fee, your household needs more than $60 in annual net savings for the membership to be worthwhile on grocery costs alone. Compare a short list of items you buy routinely, such as produce, meat, dairy or bakery goods. Use current prices at your local club and nearby stores, and compare the amount you can actually consume—not just the sticker price or package size.

- Choose your regular basket. List the fresh foods you expect to buy repeatedly rather than items you might try once.
- Compare usable unit prices. Divide each price by the quantity your household will realistically eat before the food spoils. A larger pack is not a saving if part of it goes unused.
- Include the full cost of shopping. Subtract added driving costs or delivery charges, as well as the likely cost of food that will be wasted.
- Estimate annual savings. Multiply realistic savings per trip by the number of trips you expect to make, then compare the result with the $60 fee.
No current local price basket or representative household waste figure is established here, so the calculation has to use your own area, habits and package sizes. Sam’s Club’s statement that adjusting membership pricing will “help support the things our members love,” reported by Axios, is the company’s explanation for the change, not evidence that grocery savings exceed the fee.
When Plus may be worth the extra $60
Plus costs $60 more per year than Club. Consider upgrading only if benefits you expect to use justify that difference. The official membership benefits page says Club members receive free curbside pickup on eligible orders over $50, while Plus members have no pickup minimum. For eligible Delivery from Club orders over $50, Plus includes free select same-day or next-day delivery; Club members pay $12 for that delivery. Availability and eligibility depend on the member’s area.

Plus also offers the possibility of earning up to $750 in Sam’s Cash per year, according to Axios’s report of the 2026 change. The maximum is not a guaranteed return for every member. Base your comparison on rewards you expect to earn and redeem, along with delivery or pickup benefits you will actually use—not the headline maximum.

Curbside pickup
Club members get free curbside pickup on eligible orders over $50; Plus members have no pickup minimum, according to the official benefits page. Check the minimum and eligibility for your location before treating pickup as part of your plan.

Delivery from Club
For Delivery from Club, item prices match in-club and curbside prices, according to Sam’s Club’s pricing and payment information. Some goods are sold by weight. For items including fresh meat and certain bakery and cheese products, the final price depends on the actual weight; the online listing shows a maximum price.
Instacart delivery
Instacart is a separate ordering route. Sam’s Club says nonmembers can order grocery delivery through Instacart; members who enter their membership number get lower prices than nonmembers. Its Instacart FAQ says online prices are higher than in-club prices, delivery fees may apply, and Sam’s Cash is not offered on Instacart orders. Include those differences when comparing delivery with shopping in the club.

Why guest shopping does not settle the value question
Online guest purchases carry a 10% surcharge and do not include member-only savings. Guests also cannot shop in-club or use curbside pickup, according to Sam’s Club’s guest membership information. A guest order can show whether a delivery option is convenient, but its added charge makes it an imperfect comparison with member shopping.
A quick decision checklist
- Do the fresh items you buy regularly have lower local unit prices at Sam’s Club?
- Can your household use the quantities before they spoil?
- Do the expected savings exceed the $60 Club fee after extra travel, delivery and waste?
- If considering Plus, will the pickup, eligible delivery and redeemable Sam’s Cash benefits you expect to use justify its additional $60 annual cost?
- Have you checked local prices, stock and service eligibility recently? They can vary and change.
A membership is most defensible when the answers point to repeatable net savings on a realistic basket. If a handful of bulk purchases only look cheaper before accounting for unused food or shopping costs, the fee may outweigh the benefit.
