A revived BlackBerry Passport is worth buying mainly as a collectible or a limited Wi-Fi device for someone who specifically wants its physical keyboard. It is a poor choice for a dependable everyday phone: BlackBerry ended legacy BlackBerry 10 services on January 4, 2022, and warned that affected devices—including the Passport—may no longer reliably handle data, calls, SMS, or emergency calls. BlackBerry’s end-of-life notice is the key reason to verify your intended use before paying.
Is a revived BlackBerry Passport worth buying?
It can make sense if you value the Passport’s physical keyboard, want a piece of BlackBerry history, or plan to use it in a constrained, nonessential Wi-Fi role. It is not a sensible default for a primary phone if you depend on reliable calls, emergency calling, current apps, or supported software.

BlackBerry’s notice, updated December 22, 2021, set January 4, 2022 as the termination date for legacy services affecting BlackBerry 10 devices, including the Passport. The company warned that devices running those services and software over carrier or Wi-Fi connections may no longer reliably function for data, phone calls, SMS, or 9-1-1 functionality. That also affects legacy services and applications such as hosted email and BlackBerry Link/Blend functionality. Read BlackBerry’s end-of-life notice.
That warning does not tell you whether a particular handset will connect to a particular network today. Carrier support, the phone’s variant, local network changes, and the seller’s unit condition all matter. Treat “unlocked,” “refurbished,” and “works” as claims to verify, not guarantees.

Will a BlackBerry Passport still work on my carrier?
Do not infer compatibility from a supported-band list or a network label alone. The Passport user guide says the ability to connect to a listed network does not guarantee a connection; service-plan conditions also matter. The AT&T guide applies specifically to model SQW100-3, while an FCC-hosted safety sheet identifies SQW100-1. Those references are not interchangeable proof for every Passport variant. AT&T’s Passport guide and the FCC-hosted safety sheet for SQW100-1 identify different model contexts.
- Confirm the exact model. Ask for the model number shown under Settings > About and a clear photo of any label on the handset. Match that exact variant with the carrier, rather than relying on a listing title or another Passport model.
- Ask the carrier about the specific unit. Provide the exact model and IMEI, and ask whether it can be activated for voice, SMS, and data in your area. Compatibility can vary by carrier, region, and current network support.
- Test with your intended SIM when possible. Place and receive a call, send and receive a text, and load a webpage. Check the network status at Settings > About > Network. A successful test is more useful than an “unlocked” label, but it does not establish that emergency calling or future service will be dependable.
If the phone is meant to provide reliable emergency calls, do not buy it on the assumption that it will do so. BlackBerry explicitly included emergency calling in its end-of-life warning.

What should I check before I pay?
Inspect the actual handset
Ask for a live demonstration or a meaningful return window. A listing cannot establish the condition of an individual used phone. Check these items in person or request clear video showing them working:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Display: look for cracks, dead pixels, burn-in, and responsive touch input.
- Keyboard and trackpad: type across every key and test trackpad gestures.
- Audio and imaging: test cameras, microphones, and speakers.
- Connections: test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SIM detection, and charging.
- Physical condition: inspect the micro-USB port and casing for looseness, impact damage, or signs of poor repair.
- Identity: compare the IMEI shown in settings with the listing and ask the carrier to check it.
Check battery and charging
Ask for an unplugged runtime demonstration and confirm that the handset still holds charge after a restart. Test charging with the included cable and a known-good power source. AT&T’s guide describes battery-saving measures such as lowering brightness, limiting synchronization, and turning off radios when they are not needed; those steps may reduce drain but cannot restore a worn battery. AT&T’s battery-saving guidance is not a substitute for checking the offered unit.

Test the services you actually need
Before buying, list the specific services that matter to you—such as email, maps, messaging, banking, authentication, or work access—and test them on the handset. BlackBerry’s end-of-life notice warns that legacy infrastructure and applications may have limited or unreliable functionality. Do not depend on old app-store availability, sideloaded apps, or unsupported hosted accounts for essential tasks.
Review the transaction
Check what is included, whether the seller can demonstrate the phone with a SIM, what return rights apply, and whether the seller can provide proof of ownership. Compare the total price with the condition and the limitations you have verified. No current market-price survey establishes a universal fair price; compare live listings for the same variant and condition rather than treating a seller’s “refurbished” label as a valuation.

How should I compare two Passport listings—or a Passport with a current phone?
Use the same criteria for each Passport listing so the lower asking price does not distract from a worse unit or weaker buyer protection.
Recommended Free Tools
| Comparison point | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Model and variant | Exact model number from settings or device label |
| Network | Carrier confirmation for the model and IMEI, plus an actual SIM test if possible |
| Battery and charging | Unplugged runtime, charge retention after restart, and reliable charging |
| Condition | Screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports, cameras, microphones, speakers, and casing |
| Software | Successful testing of the specific apps and services you need |
| Buyer protection | Return terms, included items, and proof of ownership |
| Total price | Asking price weighed against condition, verified function, and return protection |
When comparing it with a current phone, focus on whether each can reliably support your calls and emergency needs, essential apps, software and security support, and repair needs—not just on keyboard feel or purchase price. A current, supported handset is the safer choice for a primary phone; the Passport is best treated as a legacy device whose appeal is specific and whose limitations you can accept.
