Yes, a refurbished phone can be worth buying when its lower total price comes with clear, enforceable terms for battery condition, repairs, returns and warranty—and the model will receive security updates for as long as you expect to use it. A new mid-range phone is usually the safer choice if the saving is small, battery longevity matters most, or the refurbished model is nearing the end of software support. There is no reliable universal discount that makes every refurbished phone a good deal: compare the exact models, seller terms and local prices.
How to decide between refurbished and new
Compare the specific refurbished handset with the new mid-range phone you would otherwise buy. A lower sticker price alone does not tell you which is better value: the refurbished phone may need a battery replacement, while the new phone may offer a longer useful support period or more predictable condition.

| What to compare | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Are storage and network status comparable? Have you included delivery, fees, financing costs, and any likely battery replacement or accessory purchase? | The real saving is the difference in what you will pay to get a usable phone, not just the difference between advertised prices. |
| Battery | Is the battery new, tested against a stated minimum health level, or only described as working? | A weak battery can make an otherwise good handset inconvenient or add a replacement cost. |
| Condition and repairs | What does the seller’s grade mean? What testing was done? Are replacement parts original? How are cosmetic marks described? | “Grade A” and similar labels are not standardized promises across retailers. |
| Warranty and returns | How long does cover last, what is excluded, who handles a claim, and how long do you have to return the phone? | The seller’s written terms matter; a platform’s general protections and an individual seller’s obligations may differ. |
| Software support | What is the manufacturer’s current update commitment for this exact model, and how much time remains? | A bargain can be poor long-term value if security support ends before you plan to replace the phone. |
| Ownership period | How long do you expect to keep it, and can you tolerate wear or a battery replacement? | For longer use, battery condition and support runway carry more weight. A short-term or tightly budgeted purchase may accept cosmetic wear if the price and protections compensate. |
Set your priorities before comparing listings. If you need a dependable battery and several years of updates, treat uncertainty in either area as a cost rather than assuming the refurb will work out. If you mainly need a capable phone for a lower upfront price, cosmetic condition may matter less than a clearly stated return window and warranty.

- The price difference is meaningful after accounting for delivery, fees and any probable repairs.
- The seller explains the battery standard, tests performed, parts used, warranty and return process in writing.
- The model has enough remaining software support for your intended ownership period.
- You are comfortable with possible cosmetic marks and can inspect the phone promptly after delivery.
Refurbished can also let a buyer reach a higher-end model than they could afford new. In the GSMA’s 2025 Rethinking Mobile Phones survey, 40% of respondents said refurbished-phone savings could enable them to buy a higher-end model than new. That is a reported consumer view, not a guarantee that a particular older flagship is a better purchase than a current mid-range phone.

When a new mid-range phone makes more sense
- The refurbished saving is too small to offset uncertainty about battery, condition or repair history.
- You want a fresh battery and prefer not to rely on a seller’s battery-health description.
- The refurbished model has limited remaining security support compared with the new alternative.
- The refurbished seller’s warranty, return terms or parts policy are vague or difficult to verify.
A new phone is not automatically the better value: compare its actual support commitment and price with the refurbished alternative. But if the discounted phone comes with unresolved battery or seller-policy questions, paying more for a new handset may buy useful certainty.
What “refurbished” and a grade do—and do not—tell you
Refurbished phones may have been inspected, repaired, cleaned or resold in different ways. There is no cross-retailer grading standard that makes a particular grade equivalent everywhere. Ask what the seller actually checked, whether parts were replaced, and what the grade means for visible wear; do not infer battery health or original parts from a cosmetic grade.
Battery results can vary even among phones with similar grades. Which? reported lab tests of six second-hand Apple and Samsung phones graded A–C: the Grade A iPhone tested had 84% battery capacity, while the Samsung tested had 93%. Those results describe the particular handsets Which? tested, not all Grade A phones. Which? says Grade B or equivalent can balance price and condition based on its tests and advice, but the battery and condition of an individual listing still need checking.

How seller policies can differ
Published programs illustrate why it is worth reading the exact terms rather than relying on the word “refurbished.” In the UK, Samsung says its Certified Re-Newed Galaxy smartphones are inspected and cleaned by Samsung-approved technicians, use genuine Samsung parts, and include a two-year warranty. Samsung describes the certified battery as a genuine battery inspected against its quality standards and delivering performance comparable to a new battery. It also notes that availability varies by country or region and that phones may have minor external blemishes.
EE UK says its refurbished phones have a 24-month warranty and a 14-day return option under its policy. It says batteries are tested to performance standards; some phones have new batteries, while others meet a minimum health threshold. EE also says some refurbished phones may contain parts that are not manufacturer-original. These are examples of UK program terms, not promises that apply to all refurbished phones or to listings outside those programs. Check the current policy and the specific handset listing before buying.
Warranty, returns and UK consumer rights
Warranty terms are not the same as statutory consumer rights. For UK purchases, Which? says a refurbished or second-hand phone bought from a retailer is generally covered by consumer rights similar to a new handset. Its summary of the Consumer Rights Act describes a 30-day right to reject a phone that is not as described, fit for purpose or of satisfactory quality, and a six-month period in which the retailer must prove a fault was not present at sale. This is UK-specific guidance, not a statement of rights in other countries; marketplace and private-sale arrangements can differ, and Which? distinguishes retailer purchases from purchases where an individual seller may be responsible.

GOV.UK says an extended warranty is optional and statutory rights may still provide a remedy for faults, such as a refund, repair or replacement. Before paying extra for cover, check what protection you already have and compare the warranty’s total cost with the cost of replacing the phone. Outside the UK, check the consumer rules that apply where you live.

What to check before you pay
- Match the models and costs. Compare the same storage capacity and network status where possible. Add delivery, fees, financing costs and any battery or repair expense you reasonably expect.
- Read the listing and policy. Confirm the condition grade, what it means, the stated tests, parts policy, battery promise, warranty exclusions, claim route and return deadline. Save the listing and any stated battery threshold.
- Check software support. Look up the manufacturer’s current support commitment for the exact model and consider whether the remaining period covers your expected use.
- Assess the seller. Prefer a seller that identifies who is responsible for warranty claims and provides clear written terms. Do not assume a marketplace’s policies are the same as the seller’s own warranty.
- Compare the new alternative. Use current local prices and the exact new model you would buy; an unspecified general mid-range price cannot establish a break-even point.
What to test as soon as it arrives
Follow the seller’s return deadline and inspect the phone promptly. Which? recommends checking the cameras and camera modes, fingerprint or face unlock, included accessories, charging and headphone ports where present, buttons, and battery health or runtime. Compare what arrives with the saved listing. If you find a material fault or a mismatch, contact the retailer or seller within the stated return period.
Does buying refurbished reduce environmental impact?
It may, but a single percentage should not be treated as universal. Vodafone UK relays a 2021 life-cycle assessment result in which a refurbished phone used for an average of 1.93 years had a 55% lower contribution to climate change than a new phone used for 2.5 years. The different use durations are part of that reported comparison; it does not establish the same reduction for every model, replacement pattern or lifespan.

- This refurbished product is tested and certified to work properly. The product will have significant blemishes and/or significant scratches, dents, or frame damage. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, and may arrive in a generic box.
The GSMA’s 2025 survey found that around 90% of surveyed consumers rated durability, guaranteed software and security updates for at least seven years, and easy, low-cost repair as important factors in their next phone purchase. That describes stated priorities, not a benchmark for any specific device. For an individual decision, a phone that remains useful and secure for longer is more relevant than assuming every refurbished purchase has the same environmental benefit.
Bottom line for your shortlist
Choose refurbished when the savings are substantial for your budget and a credible seller makes battery condition, parts, testing, returns and warranty clear, with enough software support left for your plans. Choose new mid-range when the discount is modest, those protections are unclear, or battery life and longer support runway are worth paying extra for. Since no country, budget, models or ownership period are specified, the right answer comes from comparing the exact two phones and their current local terms.
