Apple Certified Refurbished has a documented testing process and a one-year limited warranty, but “refurbished” is not a single standard—and Apple does not promise a new battery for refurbished Macs.
What does “refurbished MacBook” mean?
The term does not describe one universal inspection or repair standard. Apple’s Certified Refurbished process is distinct from a retailer’s or private seller’s use of the word, so check the specific listing for what was tested, repaired and covered.

Apple Certified Refurbished
On its U.S. storefront, Apple says certified refurbished products receive full functional testing, cleaning and inspection, genuine Apple replacement parts as needed, and a one-year limited warranty. Apple also says AppleCare can provide additional coverage; eligibility and terms depend on location and device. Apple advertises savings of up to 15%, but that is a stated maximum—not a typical MacBook discount or a comparison with every current sale price. Apple Certified Refurbished details.

Other sellers
For a retailer or individual seller, ask what “refurbished” means for that particular machine. Confirm who inspected it, what work was done, whether any parts were replaced, how the condition is graded, and who handles warranty claims. Do not assume another seller follows Apple’s process.
How to decide whether the price is worth it
Compare the full offer, not just a discount percentage. Match the chip and model generation, screen size, memory, storage and condition, then compare the refurb price with the same configuration new and with current discounts on new or refurbished Macs. Prices and stock change, so a cheaper-looking refurb may not be the best deal if a comparable new Mac is on sale. Macworld also recommends comparing refurbished prices with discounted new models: Macworld’s refurbished MacBook buying guide.

| Configuration and age | Exact model generation, chip, screen size, memory, storage and age. |
| Total price | Price for that exact configuration against same-spec new and competing refurbished offers. |
| Seller and refurbishment | Who is selling it, what inspection or repair was performed, and the device’s condition. |
| Protection | Warranty length, who handles repairs, return window and exclusions. |
| Battery | Battery condition, cycle count and likely service cost if it is worn. |
| Private-sale readiness | Whether Activation Lock has been removed and the Mac can be set up with your account. |
| Availability | Whether the exact configuration is actually in stock at the price being compared. |
There is no established universal discount threshold that makes a refurbished MacBook worthwhile. The right comparison depends on the exact configuration, its condition and the protections included. A new Mac may be better value if a sale narrows the price gap, the configuration you need is unavailable refurbished, or buying new matters more to you.
Does a refurbished MacBook come with a new battery?
Not necessarily. Apple’s Certified Refurbished page does not promise new batteries for refurbished Macs, so check the battery condition for the individual device—especially for a used listing. Ask for its cycle count and battery health, and include potential service in your cost comparison if the battery is worn.

Apple explains how to find a Mac laptop’s cycle count and notes that the maximum cycle count varies by model. It says batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity at the maximum cycle count for that model. That is not a universal pass/fail threshold for buying: a high count is a reason to consider condition and possible service costs, not an automatic rejection. Apple says covered AppleCare battery service is available when the battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity; service outside coverage may have a fee. Check local plan and device eligibility before relying on that coverage. Apple battery-service information.

Is it safe to buy a refurbished MacBook from a private seller?
A private sale needs an extra check: make sure Activation Lock is cleared before paying. Ask the seller to turn off Find My and remove the Mac from their account, then confirm you can begin setup with your own account. A Mac still linked to someone else may require that person’s credentials to turn off Find My, erase or reactivate it, or use the locked device.
