It is a much weaker buy if you expect to purchase games digitally from Nintendo or rely on Nintendo-hosted online play: new eShop purchases ended in 2023, and Nintendo online services for 3DS software ended in 2024. In 2026, the decision comes down to the games you want, the console’s condition and model, and the price of a comparable used system near you.
What can you still do with a Nintendo 3DS?
Play physical 3DS and DS games
A physical game card is the clearest way to build or use a 3DS library today. Nintendo’s operations manual says the card slot accepts Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo DSi game cards. That does not mean every game is easy to find or inexpensive: check the availability, authenticity, and price of the particular titles you want before buying the console.
For a buyer who already owns cartridges, or has a shortlist of games available physically, the system can still serve its main purpose without new eShop purchases. Confirm that the console reads cards before a used-system return period expires.
Use offline modes and local features
Nintendo discontinued online play and other functionality that uses online communication for 3DS software on April 8, 2024. Offline modes remain usable. Nintendo also says StreetPass remains available because it uses local communication between nearby 3DS-family systems, rather than Nintendo’s online service. SpotPass features that require online communication do not continue to work.

Nintendo identified Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter as online services that remained available when it announced the shutdown, while warning that those services could also end. Do not treat that notice as a guarantee of their availability in 2026. Nintendo’s announcement explains which functions were affected: Nintendo’s 3DS and Wii U online-services notice.
Can you still buy 3DS games digitally?
No. Nintendo ended the ability to purchase 3DS software and DLC through Nintendo eShop on March 27, 2023. Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC can still be redownloaded “for the foreseeable future,” but that wording is not a permanent guarantee. A used console should not be valued on the assumption that a previous owner’s digital library will come with it; purchases belong to the account and access is not the same as owning a cartridge.

What will a used 3DS cost in 2026?
There is no dependable single price for every model, region, and condition. A 2024 secondhand-device study described thousands of 3DS console listings and completed sales on marketplaces such as eBay and Amazon, illustrating that a used market exists, not establishing a current price for your location. Tom’s Hardware reported used New Nintendo 3DS XL prices of US$200–350 in December 2025; that is a dated, model-specific reported range, not a 2026 appraisal or an international benchmark.

For a realistic comparison, check recent sold listings where you live and compare the same family model in similar condition. Include shipping and taxes, and account for whether the charger and stylus are included, the seller’s return policy, and any repairs or replacement parts the console may need. The 3DS family was discontinued in September 2020; Read and co-authors’ 2024 case study, citing Nintendo (2021), reports nearly 76 million units sold over its lifetime. That approximate lifetime figure does not tell you how many working systems are available locally today.

There is no universally best-value model established by current comparable prices. Choose by the games and features you care about, the condition of the particular unit, and its total local price rather than assuming a model always carries a fixed premium.

- Screen and size: Decide whether you want the stereoscopic 3D display and whether the larger XL screens suit you. Inspect both screens for damage and check the hinge for looseness or cracks.
- Controls and wear: Test the buttons, circle pad, touch input, speakers, charging port, and card slot. Check the shell and hinges for damage that could affect use.
- Included items: Factor in a compatible charger and stylus, plus the battery’s condition. Verify the exact battery and charger part for the model and region; “3DS compatible” on a generic listing is not enough to establish fit.
- Region and games: Confirm the console’s region and that it suits the games you intend to play. Check physical availability for each must-have title rather than assuming the whole catalogue is readily obtainable.
What to check before buying a used Nintendo 3DS
- Make a game list first. Identify the specific 3DS and DS games you want, then confirm which are available as physical cards and what they cost locally.
- Compare like with like. Look at recent sold listings for the same model and similar condition. Add shipping, taxes, missing accessories, and any difference in return policy to the comparison.
- Inspect the hardware. Ask for clear photos of both screens, hinges, shell, charging port, and model or serial label. If possible, test both screens, touch input, buttons, circle pad, speakers, cameras if important, wireless and local functions, charging, and game-card reading.
- Check power and accessories. Ask whether the battery holds a charge and whether a compatible charger is included. Nintendo’s original 3DS manual identifies CTR-003 as the original-model battery and lists WAP-002 as the adapter in that manual’s regional variant; other models and regions may differ, so verify the specific parts for the unit you are considering.
- Buy on what is included and testable. Do not pay extra for an assumed previous owner’s digital purchases or rely on future eShop redownload availability. Treat claims about third-party online networks cautiously: Nintendo’s service notice establishes Nintendo’s shutdown, not the reliability of outside services.
Who should buy one—and who should pass?
It is a good fit if
- You have particular 3DS or DS games you want to play and can obtain them on physical cards.
- You value a handheld with two screens, stereoscopic 3D on models that support it, or local features such as StreetPass.
- You are comfortable buying aging hardware after checking its condition, accessories, and price against local sold listings.
It is a poor fit if
- You expect to buy new games or DLC through the 3DS eShop.
- Your main reason for buying is Nintendo-hosted online multiplayer or other online-communication features that ended in 2024.
- You have not checked whether your must-have games are available physically at a price you consider reasonable.
