Sometimes—but not for everyone. A handheld gaming PC is a strong alternative when you value portable play, access to PC storefronts, and the ability to use a dock or monitor when convenient. It is a weaker replacement for a PS5 or Xbox when your priority is a simple TV-first experience, guaranteed access to particular console exclusives, long sessions without a charger, or consistent living-room performance.
The right decision depends on your must-play games, where you play, how much setup you tolerate, and the complete cost of the device, games, storage, accessories, and subscriptions. Treat a handheld as a portable PC with console-style controls—not as a smaller PS5 or Xbox.

What a handheld gaming PC actually replaces
A handheld gaming PC combines a computer, built-in controls, a small screen, speakers, battery, and wireless connectivity in one device. You install games from PC storefronts, adjust graphics settings, manage updates, and sometimes troubleshoot Windows or launcher issues. The main benefit is that the same machine can be used on a sofa, in bed, during travel, or at a desk with a monitor.

A home console is designed around a different promise: connect it to a television, sign in, install a game, and play with minimal maintenance. Consoles also provide a fixed hardware target for developers. A handheld PC has more flexibility but more variables: resolution, power mode, frame-rate cap, upscaling, driver version, and whether the charger is connected can all change the result.

That distinction explains the short verdict: a handheld can replace some console use, but it is not a universal replacement for a PS5 or Xbox.
Start with your games, not the hardware
Before comparing specifications, make a list of the games you would play most. Compatibility is the deciding factor because a handheld may offer several different ways to access a title, and those methods are not equivalent.
Native PC installation
If a game has a PC version, you can install it from a compatible storefront and run it locally. Check more than whether the game launches. Look for controller support, shader-compilation stutter, anti-cheat restrictions, text readability on a small display, and whether the performance target is realistic at the handheld’s resolution.

The ROG Xbox Ally family runs Windows 11 Home and can present supported Xbox and other PC storefront games through its controller-focused Xbox interface. Xbox also documents cloud streaming, remote play from an Xbox console, account progress syncing, and Xbox Play Anywhere for supported titles. These are useful access options, not a guarantee that every Xbox game runs natively on the handheld.
Xbox states: “When you own a game that is Xbox Play Anywhere, it’s yours to play across PC, Xbox console, and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost.” The important limits are “Xbox Play Anywhere” and “supported gaming handhelds.” The feature does not convert an entire Xbox library into a native handheld library.
Cloud streaming or remote play
Cloud streaming requires a suitable service, a compatible title, and a reliable internet connection. Remote play requires an Xbox console that stays available on your network or over the internet. Both can make a handheld useful for games that are not installed locally, but latency, connection quality, service availability, and subscription requirements become part of the experience.
PlayStation games
Do not assume that owning a PS5 game means you can run it on a handheld PC. Some PlayStation-published games have PC releases, while others remain console-only or arrive later. The available evidence does not establish a complete PS5-to-PC compatibility map, so verify every must-play title individually before selling or skipping a console.

Handheld performance should be judged against the games and settings you actually use, not against a console’s headline specifications. A handheld’s integrated CPU and GPU share a limited power budget, and its screen commonly uses a lower resolution than a television. Lower resolution and upscaling can produce a good image, but they are not the same as matching a console at every setting.
Published ROG Xbox Ally X results
ASUS reports the following ROG Xbox Ally X results at 1080p, default settings, and Turbo mode while plugged in:
| Game | Average frame rate | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Doom: The Dark Ages | 36 fps | ASUS manufacturer result under the stated plugged-in test conditions |
| Indiana Jones and the Great Circle | 56 fps | ASUS manufacturer result under the stated plugged-in test conditions |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 33 fps | ASUS manufacturer result under the stated plugged-in test conditions |
These numbers show why one game cannot stand in for another. They are not a like-for-like comparison with PS5 or Xbox performance, and Turbo mode while plugged in is not the same situation as battery-powered play.

Independent results show similar variation
PC Gamer’s listed ROG Xbox Ally X tests averaged 26 fps in Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p medium, rising to 39 fps with upscaling. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p medium, the result was 41 fps, or 53 fps with upscaling. Those are that publication’s measurements with its own device and configuration; they should not be generalized to every game, firmware version, or console.

What changes your frame rate
- Resolution: Rendering at 720p or 800p generally reduces the workload compared with 1080p.
- Graphics settings: Shadows, ray tracing, crowd density, reflections, and texture quality can have very different costs.
- Upscaling: Technologies that render internally at a lower resolution can improve frame rate, with a possible sharpness or artifact trade-off.
- Power mode: Silent, balanced, and Turbo profiles allocate different power levels and affect both speed and fan noise.
- Power source: Many handhelds sustain their highest performance when connected to the charger.
- Thermals: A warm room, blocked vents, or a long session can reduce sustained performance.
If your expectation is a stable, console-like experience, define it as a target for each game—for example, 30 fps at a chosen resolution—rather than assuming the handheld will reproduce a console preset.
Battery life is the central compromise
A handheld’s freedom from the television is limited by its battery. Demanding 3D games consume substantially more power than lightweight or older titles, and higher brightness, wireless networking, frame-rate targets, and performance modes reduce runtime.
Steam Deck OLED figures
Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED at approximately 640g with a 7.4-inch OLED display, a 50Wh battery, and estimated gameplay of 3–12 hours. That range is an estimate rather than a promise: a demanding modern game can sit near the lower end, while a lightweight game can approach the upper end.
ROG Xbox Ally figures
Xbox lists a 60Wh battery for the ROG Xbox Ally and an 80Wh battery for the ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS claims up to 9.9 hours of light gaming and up to 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming for the Ally X. ASUS’s test conditions were 75% display brightness, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, audio at 50%, and online play. Light testing used Hollow Knight: Silksong at 1080p with a 60-fps limit, low graphics, and Silent mode; heavy testing used Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with a 60-fps limit and low graphics.
Those are ASUS test results, not guaranteed real-world durations. Your game, brightness, frame-rate cap, firmware, network conditions, and power profile can produce a different result. For long flights or commutes, plan around the lower runtime of your most demanding game and carry a suitable charger or power bank if the device supports it.
Portability, screen size, and comfort
Weight matters because the device is held rather than placed on a desk. Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED at approximately 640g. Xbox lists the ROG Xbox Ally at 670g and the ROG Xbox Ally X at 715g. The Ally X’s larger battery contributes to its weight, but a bigger battery can be worthwhile if you regularly play away from an outlet.
| Device | Operating system | Display or connectivity details | Battery | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | SteamOS 3 | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, up to 90Hz | 50Wh; Valve estimates 3–12 hours | Approximately 640g |
| ROG Xbox Ally | Windows 11 Home | Wi-Fi 6E; Bluetooth 5.4 | 60Wh | 670g |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Windows 11 Home | Wi-Fi 6E; Bluetooth 5.4 | 80Wh | 715g |
A handheld screen is excellent for personal play but less suitable for a group than a television. If you mainly play local multiplayer with people in the same room, consider whether you will use the handheld display, connect it to a dock, or keep the console you already own.
SteamOS versus Windows 11
SteamOS 3 on Steam Deck OLED
SteamOS is built around Steam’s library and a controller-friendly interface. That focus can reduce friction for games purchased through Steam, although compatibility is not universal and some titles may require configuration or may not run properly. Desktop mode and community tools add flexibility, but they also make the device a small Linux computer rather than a locked-down console.

Windows provides access to multiple PC storefronts and broad peripheral support. The trade-off is that Windows remains underneath the handheld interface. Tom’s Hardware has discussed sleep and wake functionality as an issue in its ROG Xbox Ally coverage, while noting that the Xbox full-screen layer improves handheld use without replacing Windows itself.

Expect occasional desktop-style tasks: signing into launchers, accepting updates, handling notifications, changing display settings, or troubleshooting a game that does not recognize the controls. A console remains the simpler reference point for someone who wants to press a button and play on a television.

Compare the complete setup, not only the handheld’s advertised price. Prices and availability vary by country and change frequently, so verify the current local listing immediately before buying.
- Games: A PC version may be included in an existing subscription, require a separate purchase, or differ from the console edition.
- Storage: Large modern games can quickly consume internal storage. A compatible microSD card can expand capacity, but check supported specifications and expected performance.
- Case: A protective case is sensible for travel and protects controls and the display in a bag.
- Dock: A charging dock can simplify connection to a television, monitor, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, or other USB devices. Xbox lists a microSD card, carry case, and charger dock as optional accessories for the Ally family.
- Power: Carry the correct charger for the performance level you expect. A small phone charger may not sustain demanding play.
- Subscriptions: Cloud gaming, online multiplayer, or a game catalog may require a subscription, depending on the service and title.
Write down the price of the handheld, the storage you need, a case, a dock if relevant, and the games or services required for your actual library. That total is the meaningful comparison with a console.
When a handheld is the better choice
- You regularly play away from a television or share the main TV.
- Your favorite games are available on PC and have confirmed handheld-compatible controls and performance.
- You already own a substantial PC library or can use supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles across devices.
- You value one device that can connect to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse as well as work portably.
- You are comfortable changing graphics settings, managing launchers, and solving occasional Windows or game-specific problems.
- You accept shorter battery life for demanding games and are willing to play near an outlet or carry a charger.
When a PS5 or Xbox remains the better choice
- Your must-play games are console-exclusive, unavailable on PC, or not confirmed to work on the handheld.
- You mostly play on a television and rarely need portable gaming.
- You want predictable performance without tuning resolution, power profiles, or upscaling.
- You play long AAA sessions and do not want battery management.
- You rely on local multiplayer, a simple controller setup, or quick suspend-and-resume behavior.
- You would be frustrated by Windows sleep/wake behavior, launcher updates, or compatibility troubleshooting.
A practical decision process
- List five must-play games. Mark whether each has a native PC version, a supported Xbox cross-device option, a streaming route, or no confirmed handheld path.
- Choose a performance target. Decide whether 30 fps is acceptable, whether you need 60 fps, and which image-quality compromises you will tolerate.
- Check where you play. Count your typical portable sessions and television sessions. A device bought for portability should be used portably often enough to justify its compromises.
- Estimate battery needs. Use the demanding game you play most, not a lightweight title, as your planning baseline.
- Calculate the complete cost. Add storage, case, dock, charger, games, and subscriptions that your setup requires.
- Decide your tolerance for PC maintenance. If installing launchers and adjusting settings sounds unacceptable, a console is likely the better fit.
- Keep or sell the console only after testing. Confirm your games, controls, saves, display setup, and network features on the handheld before treating it as a replacement.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Assuming every console game is available
Check the exact title and edition. “Available through cloud,” “playable through remote play,” “has a PC version,” and “runs locally” describe different experiences.
Using manufacturer figures as universal benchmarks
ASUS’s frame-rate and battery figures are tied to named games and test settings. Use them as examples of possible results, not as a guarantee for your library.
Comparing plugged-in Turbo performance with battery play
High-power testing can require the charger. Expect a different balance of frame rate, fan noise, heat, and battery life when playing unplugged.
Ignoring the interface
A controller-focused shell can make Windows more usable, but it does not remove Windows maintenance. Test sleep, wake, updates, sign-in, and launcher behavior during your return period.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Budgeting only for the handheld
A nearly full drive, an unprotected device, or no convenient way to connect to a television can make the purchase feel incomplete. Include the accessories and storage you will actually use.
Bottom-line buying advice
Choose a handheld gaming PC if portability and PC-library access are central to how you play, and if your must-play games have a confirmed local or supported streaming route. The Steam Deck OLED emphasizes a SteamOS-centered experience with a 7.4-inch OLED display, while the ROG Xbox Ally family emphasizes Windows 11, multiple PC storefronts, and supported Xbox features. Neither specification sheet guarantees console-equivalent performance in every game.
Keep or buy a PS5 or Xbox when your library, television-first habits, battery expectations, or desire for low-maintenance play matter more than portability. For many players, the best answer is not replacement but division of roles: a console for the television and exclusives, and a handheld for portable or PC-focused gaming.
