Usually, “free to download” means only that you can install the game without paying upfront. The game may still sell digital currency, extra levels, cosmetic items, season access, or subscriptions. Some charges repeat automatically, while others are one-time or consumed and bought again. A game can also contain advertising even when its download costs nothing.
There is no universal definition of “free” beyond the download price. Check the specific game’s current store listing, read every offer screen, and review your platform’s purchase controls before allowing a child—or yourself—to play and buy.

What “free” means in a game store
Stores commonly use “free” to describe the download price, not the total cost of playing. Apple describes a freemium game as one that people can download and play at no cost while optional in-app purchases supplement the experience. That can mean the core game is playable without spending, but progress, convenience, cosmetic content, extra modes, or other digital goods may be offered for money.

Not every free-to-download game has purchases, subscriptions, or ads. The store listing for the individual title is the authority. On Apple’s App Store, the listing identifies whether in-app purchases are offered. Google Play listings and the game’s own purchase screens provide additional terms. Listings can change after an update, so an older review or a prior experience is not a guarantee of what the game currently offers.

“Free to play” also does not answer whether spending is necessary for your preferred experience. One player may be content with the free levels and optional cosmetics, while another may want every level, convenience feature, or competitive advantage. Check what is playable without payment and whether a purchase is permanent, temporary, or repeatable.
Three download-and-payment models
| Model | What you pay to download | What may cost extra |
|---|---|---|
| Freemium | Nothing | Optional features, digital goods, upgrades, or subscriptions |
| Paid | A one-time download price | Possibly optional in-game purchases or subscriptions |
| Paymium | A paid download | Further optional purchases after installation |
These are platform business-model descriptions, not promises about a particular title. A game may fit more than one description over its lifetime, especially after updates. Apple cautions that making paid in-app purchases necessary to use an app can create a poor player experience; still, whether spending is necessary depends on the game’s design and your goals.
The four kinds of in-game purchase
The label on an offer tells you whether the item disappears, stays on the account, or creates an ongoing charge. Apple’s purchase categories are useful for reading any game’s offer screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConsumables
Consumables are used up. Coins, gems, energy, extra lives, and temporary boosts are typical examples. After you spend them, you can buy more. Because the same offer can be purchased repeatedly, a small individual price can become a large total over time. Treat the listed amount as a per-purchase charge, not a lifetime cost.
Ask what one bundle actually does in the game. A virtual currency may be exchanged for several different items, and the exchange rate can make the final cost less obvious than the bundle price. Keep a running total if spending is allowed, especially when a game offers several package sizes or presents another offer immediately after a purchase.
Nonconsumables
A nonconsumable is normally bought once and does not expire. Examples include an additional level pack, a permanent feature, or a full-game unlock. “One time” describes the item’s intended duration; it does not mean every other feature is included. Check exactly what the unlock covers and whether it applies across devices or only to the account and platform where you bought it.
Look for wording about account restoration before changing devices or reinstalling. A permanent item can still be limited to a particular store account, game account, operating system, or platform. Do not assume that buying it on one platform transfers to another.

An auto-renewable subscription charges on a repeating schedule until canceled. The interval may be weekly, monthly, or another period shown in the offer. Apple says subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Google Play’s policy requires the cost, billing frequency, automatic-renewal terms, and other material information to be disclosed.

Nonrenewing subscriptions
A nonrenewing subscription grants access for a stated period and ends unless you manually purchase another period. It does not create an automatic renewal, but the game can still present a new offer when access expires. Confirm the end date and what happens to items or progress obtained during the subscription.
| Purchase type | Does it run out? | Can it be charged again? | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consumable | Yes, when used | Usually yes | What does one unit buy, and how quickly will it be used? |
| Nonconsumable | No stated expiry | Usually no for that item | Which levels, modes, or features are permanently unlocked? |
| Auto-renewable subscription | Access continues while paid | Yes, automatically unless canceled | What is the interval, renewal price, trial end, and included content? |
| Nonrenewing subscription | Yes, at the stated end date | Only if you buy again | When does access end, and what remains afterward? |
How to think about the real cost
The practical cost is the sum of everything you choose to buy, not the download label. A consumable has a price each time it is purchased. A subscription has a price each billing interval for as long as it remains active. A nonconsumable has a one-time price for the stated content, but other content may remain separate.
Write down the price in the currency actually charged, the billing interval, and the date of the next renewal. If a store displays a monthly equivalent for a longer plan, also check the amount charged at checkout. Introductory pricing can end, and a trial can become a paid subscription if it is not canceled under the stated terms. There is no single cost that applies to every free-to-download game, so the offer screen is more useful than the word “free.”

Subscriptions: read the recurring terms, not just the headline price
A subscription offer should be judged by its complete terms. Before accepting, identify:
- The full price, including the amount after any introductory period.
- The billing interval and the date the first charge will occur.
- Whether the plan renews automatically.
- The trial or promotional period’s end date and what happens if you do not cancel.
- The features, content, currency, or ad changes actually included.
- Where cancellation is performed and how long before renewal it must be completed.
Google Play says subscriptions must provide sustained or recurring value throughout the subscription’s life and may not be used to disguise a one-time benefit as a recurring plan. That policy does not mean every subscription includes every game feature. A parent may pay for a subscription and still see advertisements for other paid features, as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns. “Premium,” “ad-free,” and “subscription” are not interchangeable labels: verify what each one removes or adds.
What cancellation normally does
Google Play’s general policy says canceling stops the next renewal while access normally continues through the current billing period. The policy notes that country-specific rules and some circumstances can allow immediate cancellation or a prorated refund. Apple states that subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. The result can depend on the platform, country, purchase route, and applicable law, so do not assume that deleting the game cancels a subscription or guarantees a refund.
Cancel from the account that was billed, not merely from the game’s settings. Save the cancellation confirmation, note the effective date, and check the next statement or receipt. If the offer was purchased through a different store, that store’s subscription page is generally where its renewal is managed. When a child uses a family account, identify which adult account owns the subscription before trying to change it.
Ads, paid features, and randomized items
Advertising can remain in a “free” game
A game can be free to download and still show advertising. A subscription may remove some ads without removing ads for separate paid features. Read the wording of the specific offer rather than inferring coverage from “premium” or “ad-free.” Ratings and reviews can reveal how advertising feels in practice, but they describe earlier versions and are not a promise about future updates.

Separate the questions “Are there ads?” and “Can I pay to remove them?” A game can answer yes to both, while still displaying promotions for other purchases. If advertising is a concern for a child, watch representative gameplay and read the current description rather than relying on a badge or a single review.
Randomized virtual items
Some purchase flows sell a randomized virtual item, such as a loot box. Google Play policy requires the odds for purchased randomized virtual items to be disclosed before, and close to, the purchase. Look for those probabilities on the offer screen. An odds disclosure tells you the chance of receiving each category; it does not guarantee a valuable result or a spending limit.
Before approving one, decide whether a chance-based purchase fits your household rules. Compare the possible outcomes with the price, and treat each opening as a separate expense. A disclosed probability is not a promise that a desired item will appear after a certain number of purchases.

How to inspect a game before installing or paying
- Open the current store listing. Check the download price, in-app-purchase indicator, age and content rating, developer-provided description, and any subscription language.
- Read the purchase section. Note whether the game sells consumables, permanent unlocks, subscriptions, or randomized items. Record the displayed prices and currencies.
- Launch without approving an offer. Inspect the first purchase screen and its small print. Find the full price, billing interval, renewal wording, trial end date, and included benefits before selecting a confirmation button.
- Check the game’s account or help pages. Determine whether purchases are tied to your store account, a separate game account, or a particular device. Look for restoration instructions for nonconsumables.
- Review independent signals. Read recent ratings and reviews and, for a child, watch representative gameplay. Look specifically for reports of forced spending, frequent prompts, aggressive advertising, or changes after updates.
- Set controls before play. Use the device or account’s available controls to disable purchases, require a password or authentication, or set a spending limit.
- Agree on household rules. Decide whether purchases are allowed, which account can approve them, and whether a child must ask before every transaction.
Interface names and locations vary by operating system, account type, country, and software version. Use the current instructions for your device or platform rather than relying on a screenshot from an older guide.
Controls that reduce accidental spending
The FTC recommends using parental controls where available to disable purchases, require a password, or limit spending. Enable the strongest option that fits your household before handing over the device. A password prompt is useful only if the child does not know the password and the account is not left authenticated for unrestricted purchases.
- Disable purchases: Best when a child should never buy in the game.
- Require authentication: Useful when adults approve occasional purchases; do not share the approval credential.
- Set a spending limit: Appropriate when purchases are allowed within a defined budget, if the platform offers that control.
- Review transaction history: Check receipts and account history regularly so a recurring charge is noticed promptly.
- Use a separate child account: Where supported, keep payment credentials and adult subscriptions away from a child’s profile.
Controls do not replace conversation. Explain that tapping a button can authorize real money; the FTC’s plain-language warning is, “Each click is a payment.” Agree on what counts as permission and what to do if an offer appears unexpectedly.
Comparing two “free” games fairly
When choosing between titles, compare the complete cost and experience rather than download price alone.
| Comparison point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Download price | Free or one-time amount | Shows only the entry cost. |
| Playable content without spending | Levels, modes, characters, and progression available at no charge | Two free downloads can offer very different complete experiences. |
| Purchase types | Consumables, nonconsumables, subscriptions, and randomized items | Reveals whether spending repeats or creates an ongoing commitment. |
| Subscription terms | Price, interval, renewal, trial, cancellation, and included benefits | Prevents a low introductory price from hiding a later recurring charge. |
| Advertising | Where ads appear and what a paid plan removes | “Ad-free” may apply only to specified advertising. |
| Controls and suitability | Purchase restrictions, age/content rating, and recent reviews | Determines whether the game fits the player and household rules. |
Also compare the payment route. A purchase made through a mobile store may have different cancellation, receipt, and refund processes from one made through a separate game account. Record which account is billed and keep the confirmation email. This simple detail can save time when a renewal or disputed charge needs to be traced.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Common surprises and what to do
“I thought the subscription covered everything.”
Reopen the subscription description and list its included benefits. Ads or prompts for separate paid features can still appear. Do not buy another item until you know whether it is outside the subscription’s scope.
“The trial charged me.”
Check the trial’s stated end date, the account’s subscription page, and the receipt. If the plan is still active, cancel it before the next renewal. A refund is not automatic; eligibility depends on the platform, region, purchase route, and applicable rules.
“I deleted the game, but the charge continues.”
Uninstalling an app does not itself cancel an auto-renewable subscription. Open the store account that was billed, locate its subscription management area, and cancel there. Keep the confirmation and check the next statement.
“A child bought items without asking.”
Secure the account immediately, change or remove stored payment access, enable purchase restrictions, and review the transaction history. Contact the platform through its current support process with the receipt details. Do not promise yourself that a refund will be granted; policies and local law determine the outcome.
“The item was random.”
Look for the odds disclosure required for purchased randomized virtual items on Google Play. Treat the purchase as a chance-based expense, not a guaranteed upgrade, and set a household rule against buying if the odds or total budget are unacceptable.
“The price looked small, but I bought it several times.”
Check whether the item was a consumable. Consumables can be depleted and purchased again, so review the transaction history rather than judging only one receipt. Set authentication requirements or a spending limit before playing again.
A practical family policy
A short written agreement prevents many disputes:
- No purchase without the named adult’s approval.
- Subscriptions require the adult to read the renewal date and set a reminder.
- Consumable currency has a fixed monthly or weekly budget, if any spending is allowed.
- Children can report an unexpected offer without fear of punishment, so it can be handled quickly.
- Adults review receipts and active subscriptions at a regular interval.
Revisit the agreement after major game updates, a change in device, or a new subscription offer. Store listings, prices, interfaces, and available controls can vary by country and change over time.

A free-to-download game may be genuinely playable without payment, but the word “free” does not disclose ads, optional purchases, randomized items, or recurring subscriptions. Identify the game’s purchase categories, read the complete subscription terms, check what a plan actually includes, and enable purchase controls before play. That process answers the only question that matters for a particular title: what can this game charge, how often, and under whose approval?

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every free-to-download game contain in-game purchases?
No. Some free games have no purchases or subscriptions, while others offer consumables, permanent unlocks, subscriptions, ads, or randomized items. Check the current store listing and the game’s own offer screens.
Will deleting a game cancel its subscription?
No. Uninstalling normally does not cancel an auto-renewable subscription. Manage it through the store account or purchase route that billed you, then keep the cancellation confirmation.
What is the difference between a consumable and a nonconsumable?
A consumable is used up, such as virtual currency or extra lives, and can usually be bought again. A nonconsumable is generally a one-time purchase that does not expire, such as an extra level pack or permanent unlock.
Does a subscription include every feature and remove every ad?
Not necessarily. Read the included-benefits wording. The FTC warns that ads for separate paid features can still appear while a player uses a subscription.
Can a free game charge automatically?
Yes, if you accept an auto-renewable subscription. Check the full price, billing interval, trial end date, renewal terms, and cancellation method before agreeing.
Are loot-box odds supposed to be shown?
Google Play policy requires odds for purchased randomized virtual items to be disclosed before and close to the purchase. Odds describe chances, not a guaranteed result or a spending cap.
How can parents prevent accidental purchases?
Use available parental controls to disable purchases, require authentication, or set a spending limit. Keep approval credentials private, review receipts, and agree on family rules with children.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: “Free to download” describes entry, not every possible charge. Check the game’s listing and offers, distinguish repeatable items from permanent unlocks, read renewal terms, and activate purchase controls before anyone plays.
