Yes, but only if the foldable design solves a problem you actually have and you can accept more maintenance and repair uncertainty than with a conventional phone. Current evidence is more reassuring than the early reputation of foldables suggests: Which? says 58 of 59 foldable models in its repeated-fold test passed 30,000 cycles, while Samsung says the Flex hinge in the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 was designed for an average of more than 200,000 folds. Those figures come from controlled testing and a manufacturer estimate, not a promise that any phone will survive a particular number of years, drops or dusty environments.
The practical decision is therefore not “Will the hinge ever wear?” Every mechanical hinge can wear. The useful questions are whether the compact flip or large inner display is worth the added mechanical risk, how you will keep grit away, and whether the exact model has affordable, local repair coverage.

What the strongest hinge evidence actually shows
Two figures dominate the discussion, but they measure different things and should not be blended into a universal lifespan claim.
| Evidence | What was tested or claimed | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Which? laboratory test, reported 30 October 2025 | Which? says it opened and closed phones 30,000 times. Of 59 foldable models tested since 2020, 58 completed the test without a problem; the model that faltered was described as a very early model. | It is not a real-world failure rate, a guarantee for every brand or model, or evidence that a phone will tolerate grit, impact or years of use. |
| Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip5/Fold5 hinge FAQ | Samsung says the Flex hinge is designed to handle “over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average.” It relates specifically to those named models and Samsung’s stated test assumptions. | It does not apply automatically to other brands or later devices, and it is not a free-repair promise or protection against contamination and drops. |
The independent result is encouraging: one early failure among 59 tested models is not evidence that modern foldables routinely fail at the hinge. But the test is still a machine-operated repetition test. It cannot reproduce every combination of pocket debris, sideways force, temperature, accidental drops and uneven wear that a phone experiences in daily life.

How many times can a foldable phone fold?
The manufacturer estimate
For the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5, Samsung’s stated average exceeds 200,000 opening-and-closing cycles. Samsung also describes a use assumption of 100 openings and closings per day and says the device should last more than five years under that assumption. Dividing 200,000 cycles by 100 daily cycles gives roughly 2,000 days, or about 5.5 years; the company’s wording is still an estimate, not a guaranteed service life.
Actual use varies widely. Someone who checks a phone dozens of times daily may consume cycles faster than Samsung’s example, while a person who opens a book-style phone mainly for work may use fewer. A cycle rating also does not tell you how the hinge behaves after a fall or after abrasive particles enter it.
The independent test
Which?’s 30,000-cycle result provides a useful floor for confidence in the tested sample, but it is deliberately narrower than a lifetime claim. The organization reports that 58 of 59 models passed without a problem and identifies the lone failure as a very early model. The article does not provide a comparable brand-by-brand failure ranking, so it cannot support a league table of hinge longevity.
Does the hinge wear out from normal use?
Normal folding motion is what the hinge is designed to handle. Wear risk rises when the phone is exposed to forces or materials that a cycle machine may not simulate.
Dust, sand and small particles
Samsung’s foldable-care guidance warns that small particles such as sand can damage the screen or affect hinge performance, even on models with an IP48 rating. Samsung explicitly says IP48 does not mean completely dust-proof. A rating can describe a defined test condition; it does not make the hinge immune to beach sand, grit in a pocket or debris trapped between the panels.

Google makes a similar qualification for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold in its safety and regulatory guide: dust and water resistance can diminish over time through wear, repair, disassembly or damage. Treat any ingress rating as limited protection, not permission to use a foldable in dusty conditions without care.
Drops and sideways force
A hinge-cycle number concerns repeated folding in the intended direction. A drop onto a corner, twisting force while the phone is partly open, or pressure from an object between the screens can stress the hinge and display in ways that the rating does not cover. Do not force a phone flat or shut if resistance changes; inspect it and follow the manufacturer’s service route instead.

The inner screen and protective film
Hinge durability is only one part of foldable reliability. The flexible inner display, its factory-applied protector and the frame can each determine whether a repair is needed. Samsung’s care instructions tell owners to ensure no object is trapped between the screens when folding. If a protector begins lifting, bubbling or collecting debris at a crease, avoid peeling it off yourself unless the manufacturer specifically permits that procedure; ask an authorized service provider what replacement is allowed for the exact model.
Is a foldable phone durable enough for everyday use?
For many owners, yes. The evidence does not support treating every foldable as a short-lived experiment. It does support treating one as a precision device that benefits from cleaner handling and a clearer repair plan than a standard slab phone.
Choose a flip-style foldable when pocketability is the benefit
A flip design closes into a smaller footprint and can be convenient when you want a compact device for calls, messages and quick tasks. Its value is easy to judge: if a smaller closed phone changes how comfortably you carry it, the hinge is solving a daily problem rather than adding novelty.

Choose a book-style foldable when the inner display replaces another device
A book-style phone opens to a larger screen for reading, multitasking or viewing documents. The extra display can justify the mechanical complexity if it lets you leave a small tablet behind. If you mainly use messaging, maps and a camera, a conventional phone may deliver the same outcome with fewer moving parts.
What current model information can—and cannot—tell you
Model-specific claims are more useful than a generic “foldables are durable” statement. The available published information is uneven, so “not stated” is preferable to guessing.
| Model or group | Hinge-cycle information | Ingress and care information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5 | Samsung states over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average for the Flex hinge. | Samsung’s general guidance warns that IP48-rated foldables are not completely dust-proof and that particles can affect the hinge. | A manufacturer estimate for named models, not a cross-brand or future-model guarantee. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | A cycle figure is not stated in the cited product material. | The US product page presents an Armor FlexHinge and IP48 rating; Samsung’s care guidance supplies the particle and cleaning limits. | Use the product page for the configuration sold in your region and do not transfer the Flip5/Fold5 number to this model. |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | A cycle figure is not stated in the cited guide. | Google says resistance can diminish through wear, repair, disassembly or damage and directs owners to country-specific warranty information and professional service. | The published guidance emphasizes degradation and service conditions rather than a numeric hinge-life promise. |
| Motorola Razr Ultra (2025) | No comparable cycle figure is established in the cited material. | The TechRadar review contains observations from one reviewer’s sample, not a statistically comparable durability test. | An individual review can describe construction and use, but it cannot establish a population-wide hinge-failure rate. |
Which?’s aggregate test cannot be assigned to a particular model in this table unless Which? identifies that model and result. Likewise, a product page’s hinge name or rating is not proof that it outlasts a competitor.
Warranty and repair are part of hinge durability
A hinge can remain functional for years and still be an expensive risk if accidental damage or ordinary wear is excluded. Check the exact terms before buying, not after a failure.
Read the standard warranty exclusions
Samsung US mobile warranty terms exclude ordinary wear and tear and some damage associated with sand, dust or dirt. That means a hinge problem described as contamination or impact may not be treated like a manufacturing defect. Terms vary by country and model, so a US document cannot be assumed to govern a purchase elsewhere.

Price optional protection against the local repair route
Samsung Canada describes Care+ as a paid option that includes accidental-damage protection in that market. Eligibility, deductibles, covered parts, claim limits and availability depend on country, model and plan. Treat it as a possible way to reduce repair exposure, not as universal coverage. Google’s Pixel guide similarly directs owners to country-specific warranty details and professional service.
Ask about service before placing the order
- Which company is authorized to repair the exact model in your country?
- Does the service center replace the hinge assembly, the inner display, or both as a unit?
- What is the quoted out-of-warranty price, including labor and shipping?
- Is the factory inner-screen protector replaced as part of the repair?
- Will opening the phone or using an unauthorized repairer affect remaining water or dust resistance?
No comparable cross-brand repair prices are established here, so obtain a local quote rather than assuming a hinge repair will cost the same as a conventional screen replacement.

Care cannot eliminate mechanical risk, but it can reduce the preventable causes identified by manufacturers.
- Keep grit away. Avoid placing an open phone on visibly sandy or dirty surfaces. Check pockets and bags for debris before storing it.
- Wipe gently. Samsung recommends a soft, dry cloth for dirt or dust around the hinge. Use light pressure; do not scrape, pry or push material deeper into the mechanism.
- Check the closing path. Before folding, make sure coins, cards, crumbs and other objects are not between the displays.
- Use the intended motion. Open and close the phone along its normal hinge path. Do not force it flat, bend it backward or twist one half.
- Respond to a change early. New grinding, a visible gap, uneven alignment, resistance, or a screen-protector lift warrants an inspection before repeated folding makes the problem worse.
- Use professional service for internal work. Google’s guidance points owners to professional service, and opening a device can affect resistance and warranty status.
What to do if the hinge feels different
If there is dust or a light surface mark
Close the phone only if nothing is trapped between the screens, then use the manufacturer’s gentle dry-cloth method. Do not introduce liquid, compressed air or sharp tools into the hinge unless the model’s official instructions specifically allow it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf folding becomes stiff, noisy or uneven
Stop forcing the movement and record the symptom, including whether it began after a drop or exposure to grit. Photograph any visible gap or screen damage, back up your data and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair center. A service technician can determine whether the cause is contamination, hinge damage, display damage or a different fault.

If the inner protector lifts or the display shows a line
Do not peel the factory film or press repeatedly on a damaged crease. Ask the manufacturer whether the protector is user-replaceable for that model and whether the issue is covered. A protector problem and a hinge problem may require different service, so describe both symptoms accurately.
How worried should a buyer be?
Concern is common but not a prediction of failure. Which? reported that 28% of its surveyed members were concerned about the hinge, while also identifying a breaking screen as a concern. That survey describes the respondents in Which?’s sample; it is not a statistic for all phone buyers.
The better approach is to convert worry into conditions you can check:

- Wait or choose a conventional phone if you need the lowest possible repair uncertainty, work regularly in sand or fine dust, or would struggle with an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair.
- Consider protection coverage only after reading the exact regional terms, exclusions and claim costs.
Bottom line: is it worth buying?
A foldable phone is worth buying despite hinge-wear concerns when its flip pocketability or book-style screen provides a benefit you will use every day. The available testing does not show a widespread early-hinge failure problem: Which? recorded 58 passes out of 59 models at 30,000 cycles, and Samsung’s named Flip5/Fold5 hinge estimate exceeds 200,000 cycles. Those results are reassuring evidence, not lifetime insurance.
Buy with realistic expectations: keep particles out, never force the hinge, preserve the manufacturer’s screen protector, and verify warranty, protection-plan and authorized-repair terms for the exact model and country. If those precautions and costs outweigh the larger screen or smaller folded footprint, a conventional phone remains the safer purchase.
