Is a Foldable Phone Worth Buying If You Prefer Bezels and Physical Buttons?

Usually not if tactile buttons are a core requirement. Book-style foldables are still touchscreen-first phones, and their defining advantage—the large screen that opens out—may matter less to someone who prefers a conventional frame and physical controls. Consider one only if you expect to use that larger display regularly, and handle the exact model before buying.

What changes when a phone folds?

A book-style foldable replaces the familiar single-screen slab with a smaller display on the outside and a much larger one inside. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 with a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8.0-inch main display; those are diagonal measurements, and the viewable area is reduced by rounded corners and the camera opening. Samsung gives the cover screen a 21:9 aspect ratio, but whether it feels comfortable closed is a matter of hand fit and preference. Samsung’s announcement and its U.S. product page list these specifications.

The format does not turn a phone into a button-led device. Side buttons remain, but the main interaction is through the touchscreens. The available product information describes large-screen and touch-oriented use, not physical keys replacing routine navigation or input. If you want buttons for typing or moving through menus, do not assume that opening a foldable will address that preference.

When the larger screen is worth the trade-off

The inner display is most compelling if you will use it often for reading, media, or working across several apps. Tom’s Guide describes book-style foldables as useful for running roughly two to three apps simultaneously in its 2026 foldable-phone guide. If your use is mostly calls, messages, browsing, and occasional video, a conventional phone may give you the experience you want without asking you to adapt to a folding screen and hinge.

Ask yourself whether you will unfold the phone as part of ordinary use, not just when showing it off. The larger screen is a real benefit only if it earns its place in your daily routine.

Bezels, buttons, and how the phone feels in hand

Do not treat all foldables as having the same bezel profile. Android Central’s brief hands-on at MWC 2026 noted raised protective edges around the inner screens of the phones it handled. Those edges, along with camera bumps, affected how thick the devices felt; that observation is not evidence that every foldable has prominent edging or that protective edging will feel like the bezels you prefer. The comparison is an event hands-on, not a long-term evaluation.

That report listed the Galaxy Z Fold7 at 215 g and 4.2 mm thick when open, and the Motorola Razr Fold at 243 g and 4.6 mm when open. These are measurements reported in that comparison, not a guarantee of how either phone will feel in your hand. Folded dimensions and shape, hinge resistance, raised screen edges, button placement, and the feel of the side controls all matter. If available, try the exact model closed and open, and test its buttons before committing.

Two examples—and what their specifications do not tell you

Model Displays and design details What to keep in mind
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Samsung lists an 8.0-inch inner display, 6.5-inch cover display, and 21:9 cover aspect ratio. It specifies a folded size of 72.8 × 158.4 × 8.9 mm and an unfolded size of 143.2 × 158.4 × 4.2 mm; weight is 215 g. Samsung announced U.S. launch pricing of $1,999.99, with general availability starting July 25, 2025. That is launch pricing, not a verified current price. Samsung specifies an IP48 rating and describes an Armor FlexHinge; these are manufacturer specifications and claims, not a promise of immunity to water, dust, or damage. Samsung announcement; Samsung product page.
Motorola Razr Fold Motorola describes a 6.6-inch outer display, an 8.1-inch 2K LTPO inner display, and moto pen ultra support. Android Central’s MWC 2026 comparison reports 243 g and 4.6 mm open. Motorola says its internal testing found “over 75% better drop performance compared to previous-generation devices.” This is Motorola’s claim based on its own testing, not independent comparative evidence or a guarantee of durability. A brief event hands-on does not establish long-term reliability. Motorola announcement; Android Central hands-on.

Published specifications cannot tell you whether either phone’s buttons, edges, or folded shape will suit you. The Motorola Razr Fold’s stylus support may appeal if handwriting or drawing is a specific need, but it does not change the phone’s touchscreen-first character.

Care and service are part of the decision

Foldable screen and hinge care is a practical consideration, not just a matter of preference. Motorola’s North American 2026 Razr Fold user guide says to keep sharp objects and grit away from the main screen, check for cards, coins, keys, or other obstructions before closing the phone, and have the inner-screen protector replaced by approved service personnel. It says the crease is part of the design and does not affect durability. These instructions apply to that model; they should not be treated as identical rules for every foldable. Motorola’s North American user guide has the model-specific care details.

Before buying, check the warranty, software-support commitment, and repair options for the exact model and your region. A manufacturer durability statement or water-and-dust rating does not settle whether a particular phone is a good fit for your handling habits.

A practical buy-or-skip test

  • Lean toward a conventional phone if you rely on tactile controls beyond the side buttons, strongly prefer a traditional bezel and frame, or do not expect to use the inner screen often.
  • Consider a foldable if reading, media, or frequent multi-app use on a larger display is worth more to you than the familiar feel of a slab phone.
  • Try before buying if the preference is close: hold the phone folded and unfolded, type on the cover display, operate its buttons, and notice the edge around the inner screen and the hinge.
  • Compare actual costs and support for the precise model and region rather than relying on an old launch price or a general durability claim.
