It is not automatically the best choice for everyone. A 27-inch 1440p monitor gives you more screen area and finer detail, so it may suit mixed-use setups or games where visual detail matters more than maximizing frame rate. Choose based on your desk, viewing distance, games, and the frame rate your PC can sustain.
What 24.5-inch 1080p is good at
At 24.5 inches, a 1920 × 1080 image fits into a relatively compact viewing area. That can make it easier to keep the whole game in view without taking up as much desk space as a larger display. It is a well-established format for competitive gaming: BenQ lists its 24.5-inch ZOWIE XL2546K at up to 240Hz for PC, and ViewSonic advertises up to 280Hz overclocked for its 24.5-inch Full HD XG2536. These are manufacturer specifications for particular models, not guarantees that every connection, computer, or game will run at those refresh rates. A high refresh-rate monitor is most useful when your system can deliver enough frames to take advantage of it. Check the game’s performance on your PC, the monitor’s supported refresh rate for the input you intend to use, and whether any advertised overclocked mode requires a particular setting. A monitor’s maximum refresh figure alone does not tell you what frame rate your system will achieve.

| Factor | 24.5-inch 1080p | 27-inch 1440p |
|---|---|---|
| Image detail | Lower resolution across a compact screen; a practical fit when maximum fine detail is not the priority. | More pixels and screen area, providing finer detail for games and general use. |
| Competitive play | A common format for compact, high-refresh gaming; performance still depends on the specific monitor, connection, PC, and game. | Worth considering if you want more detail and area; it is not established as a guaranteed aiming advantage for every player. |
| System demand | Driving 1920 × 1080 generally involves rendering fewer pixels than 1440p, but actual frame rates depend on the hardware and game. | The higher resolution can require more graphics performance to sustain the same frame rate; check benchmarks for your own hardware and games. |
| Desk and other use | Compact screen area can suit a tighter setup or a player who prefers a smaller display. | More room for detail and general desktop use, if the additional screen area fits your setup. |
ASUS presents 24-inch 1080p as a fit for competitive esports and compact setups, while describing 27-inch 1440p or 4K as a broader mixed-use choice. Dell’s gaming monitor guide also treats size, resolution, refresh rate, and system capability as factors to weigh together. Neither size is a universal winner; the trade-off is between compactness and the resources and space needed for a larger, more detailed image. Does a larger screen help with aiming?
Some evidence suggests that a larger display can help in particular aiming tasks, but it does not establish a universal advantage. A 2023 preprint study, Toward Understanding Display Size for FPS Esports Aiming, found a small, statistically significant improvement in FPS aiming with larger display sizes. The authors said the effect likely reflected a combination of screen size, resolution, and players’ natural viewing distance, rather than isolating screen size alone. (2023 preprint)
NVIDIA reported that its research found 27-inch 1440p displays can improve aiming at small targets by up to 3% compared with traditional 24-inch 1080p displays. That is a vendor-reported research result, not a guaranteed improvement for an individual player, game, or setup. (NVIDIA, 2022)

How to decide which one suits you
- Choose 24.5-inch 1080p if you want a compact display, mainly play competitive games, or would rather prioritize a high-refresh setup than extra resolution.
- Consider 27-inch 1440p if finer detail, a larger image, or more screen area for work and everyday use matters to you, and your PC can support the frame rates you want.
- Consider your viewing distance and eyesight. They affect how sharp a display looks to you; the available sources do not establish one viewing distance that works for everyone.
- Check your whole setup. Desk space, game type, computer performance, connection support, and personal preference all matter. Do not choose on screen size or advertised refresh rate alone.
What to verify on a specific monitor
Refresh-rate limits and features vary by model and connection. Before buying, confirm the exact model and regional listing, which inputs support the advertised refresh rate, and whether an overclocked mode is required. Also compare panel characteristics, adaptive-sync support, stand adjustments, and warranty terms for the specific monitor. The XL2546K and XG2536 illustrate what particular 24.5-inch 1080p products advertise; they do not define the capabilities of every monitor in this size and resolution.
