A $175 electric bill cannot be called wrong—or “cheap”—from its dollar total alone. Check the bill’s utility, billing dates, kilowatt-hours (kWh), rates and charges, then account for the season and whether the home uses electricity for heating or cooling. An online commenter called a similar bill “cheap,” but the available thread does not establish that the commenter is an electrician or speak for electricians generally.
What the $175 figure does—and does not—tell you
A bill total combines electricity use with the prices and other charges that apply to the account. The same dollar amount can represent different usage depending on the billing period, rate schedule and utility. A longer billing cycle can also produce a higher total without a comparable increase in daily use.

A September 29, 2026 Reddit post from a Richmond-area resident describes a roughly 1,400-square-foot townhouse and bills around $150–$175. An anonymous commenter replied, “That’s cheap.” The post is one anecdote; it does not identify the commenter’s credentials or establish a typical bill for Virginia townhouses. There is no basis here to treat that remark as professional consensus.

Start with the bill’s dates and kWh
Find the billing period and total kWh on the bill or in the utility account. Compare those figures with the same season last year, if available. Compare kWh per day as well as total kWh so a longer billing period does not look like a usage surge. Dominion’s bill guide describes its bill sections and usage displays; labels and layouts may vary for other utilities.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Check the utility and the rate schedule
Confirm the provider printed on the bill before using a rate comparison. Virginia households are not all served by Dominion, and Dominion’s residential schedules apply to customers whose service arrangements match those schedules. Its residential rates page lists schedules and service arrangements.
Then review the unit rate and other line items, including fixed charges, riders and taxes. Rates can raise the dollar total even when kWh use stays similar. Dominion reports that the average residential bill will see an average increase of $11.24 in 2026 on its Virginia rate-understanding page. That is a utility-reported average impact, not a forecast for this home or proof that a particular customer’s bill rose by that amount.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
A separate historical change should not be conflated with the 2026 figure: a Virginia General Assembly Division of Legislative Services report dated October 31, 2025 describes an interim Dominion fuel-factor increase with an approximate $8.95 monthly impact for a typical residential customer for usage beginning July 1, 2025. It is a distinct rate event, not an amount to add automatically to the 2026 average or apply unchanged to every account. See the General Assembly report.
Look for changes in household electricity use
If kWh rose compared with a similar season, consider what changed in weather, equipment or routines. These are possibilities to investigate, not established causes of the townhouse bill.

- Thermostat settings: changes in set point or schedule may affect heating and cooling demand.
Use this bill-to-bill comparison
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Season and weather | Heating and cooling needs vary with outdoor conditions; compare similar times of year where possible. |
| Billing days | A longer period can raise the total even when daily use is similar. |
| Total kWh and kWh per day | These help distinguish a usage change from a change in period length. |
| Unit rate and other charges | Rates, fixed charges, riders and taxes can change the amount due independently of kWh. |
| Equipment and thermostat use | Electric heating, cooling and other major loads can shift consumption. |
| Occupancy and new loads | More time at home, added occupants or equipment can change usage. |
When to contact the utility or investigate further
If the kWh pattern is sharply different from comparable periods, or the meter readings or bill details seem inconsistent, contact the utility with the billing dates and readings available. If use remains persistently high after checking dates, consumption and rates, a home energy assessment may help identify opportunities to investigate. Availability, cost and eligibility depend on location and program; verify them with the utility or provider.
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure compatible plug-in devices, but it cannot measure central HVAC or other hardwired loads. It also does not verify the utility meter or prove that a bill is inaccurate. Start with the utility’s account usage history.
