Sometimes—but 8GB is a constrained, game-by-game minimum, not a dependable target for modern PC gaming. Some games list 8GB as their minimum while recommending 16GB, and more demanding settings can call for more. Check the current requirements for the specific game and performance you want; if you play while streaming, browsing, or using mods, 8GB is more likely to become a limitation.
What does “enough” mean for gaming?
Enough depends on the game, its settings, your performance target, and what else is running on the PC. A listed minimum is not the same as a recommended configuration: it indicates a lower supported tier, not a promise of smooth play at your preferred resolution, frame rate, or graphics settings.

For general modern gaming, Intel’s PC-building guide says, “For modern gaming, you’ll need at least 16GB of RAM.” That is broad vendor guidance, not a guarantee that every game requires exactly 16GB or that adding memory will produce a particular frame-rate increase. Treat each game’s own current specifications as the more direct check.
What game requirements show about 8GB
Published requirements vary by title and by the performance tier they describe. These examples show why 8GB can be enough to meet a minimum without being the recommended amount.

| Game or reference | System RAM stated | What the figure applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Fortnite | 8GB minimum; 16GB or higher recommended | Epic Games’ PC requirements, accessed October 7, 2026. The 8GB minimum does not meet the separate recommended tier. Epic Games’ Fortnite requirements |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 | 8GB minimum; 16GB recommended; 32GB for ray tracing | Activision’s desktop specifications, accessed October 7, 2026. The 16GB recommendation is for 90 FPS multiplayer on High settings; the page says its specifications are valid for launch and may be updated. Activision’s PC specifications |

Minimum versus recommended: how to use the numbers
If your PC has 8GB
It may meet a game’s stated minimum, as the Fortnite and Modern Warfare 4 examples show. Before installing or buying, compare your PC with the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements, then decide whether the minimum-level target is acceptable. If you want the recommended settings or plan to keep other applications open, 8GB leaves less room.
If you want more headroom
Sixteen gigabytes is a more practical starting point for modern gaming: it matches Intel’s general guidance and the recommended RAM tier in the cited Fortnite and Modern Warfare 4 specifications. It is not a universal guarantee; titles and target features differ, and the cited Modern Warfare 4 ray-tracing tier specifies 32GB.

System RAM is not graphics-card VRAM
System RAM is the computer’s main memory; VRAM is memory on the graphics card. Game specification pages may list both, so compare each requirement with the matching component in your PC. For example, Activision separates “RAM” and “Video Memory” in its Modern Warfare 4 specifications. An 8GB VRAM figure does not mean the game asks for 8GB of system RAM.

Microsoft lists 4GB RAM or greater as a Windows 11 minimum hardware requirement. That is an operating-system baseline, not a gaming recommendation: a PC can meet Windows’ minimum and still fall short of what a particular game or gaming workload calls for. Microsoft’s general memory guidance likewise discusses handling more tasks and high-performance projects, rather than setting a game-specific target.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.

- Non-ECC, DDR4 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Will adding RAM improve your game?
More RAM can help when memory capacity is the limiting factor, especially if the game competes with browsers, streaming software, mods, or other applications. It cannot fix every performance problem: a slow CPU, limited graphics card, heat-related throttling, or storage bottleneck may be the actual constraint. There is no supported fixed FPS gain to expect from moving from 8GB to 16GB; the result depends on the game and the rest of the system.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Check the game and your PC before upgrading
- Find the current game requirements. Open the publisher’s or platform’s support page for the exact title. Compare its minimum and recommended system RAM, and note which settings, frame rate, or features the recommendation describes.
- Check the rest of the target. Confirm your CPU, graphics card and VRAM, operating system, and storage against the same game requirements. RAM alone does not determine whether a PC can run a game well.
- Consider what runs alongside the game. Account for streaming, browser tabs, mods, voice chat, and other software you intend to use at the same time. Concurrent workloads make a small memory capacity more restrictive.
- Verify upgrade compatibility. Check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support information for supported memory generation, slots, maximum capacity, and whether the existing RAM is replaceable or soldered. Desktop and laptop memory are not interchangeable by assumption, and a 16GB kit is not universally compatible.
- Choose a supported configuration. If the system is upgradeable and 8GB is the bottleneck, a compatible configuration reaching 16GB is a sensible general target for modern gaming. Match the device’s specifications rather than buying a generic kit on capacity alone.
