Is 8 GB of VRAM Enough for 1080p Gaming?

Yes, 8 GB of VRAM can be enough for 1080p gaming, but it is not a guarantee that every demanding game will run smoothly at maximum settings. It is a reasonable fit when the graphics card is priced for the budget or entry-level market and you are willing to lower texture quality or other demanding settings. If you expect to use ultra textures and ray tracing, or want a card to last several years without compromises, compare 16 GB alternatives as well as the GPU’s actual performance.

What determines whether 8 GB is enough?

Resolution alone does not settle the question. The game, scene, texture preset, ray tracing settings, and whether the GPU is a laptop or desktop model all affect memory demand. A 1080p game on medium settings can behave very differently from the same game at ultra textures with ray tracing enabled.

TechSpot describes 8 GB as often near the edge for the newest 1080p games, while Notebookcheck’s laptop tests found that results varied by title and preset. Neither supports a blanket rule that 8 GB is always enough—or that it is never enough.

Texture quality is often a practical adjustment: lowering it can reduce memory pressure while keeping a game playable. That makes an 8 GB card more defensible if you are comfortable tuning settings rather than insisting on the maximum preset. See TechSpot’s guidance on VRAM and PC gaming.

What do tests show in specific games?

Individual tests illustrate why the answer depends on the game and settings. These results are from the cited outlets’ test systems; they are not universal performance guarantees, and differences between card models cannot automatically be attributed to VRAM alone.

Cyberpunk 2077: similar averages, different 1% lows

In PC Gamer’s 2026 test of Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p, Medium ray tracing, and Quality upscaling, the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB and 16 GB versions both averaged 91 FPS. Their reported 1% lows were 44 FPS and 63 FPS, respectively. In the same test, the RX 9060 XT 8 GB averaged 72 FPS with a 51 FPS 1% low; its 16 GB version averaged 85 FPS with a 67 FPS 1% low. The cards’ designs and performance differ, so these figures do not isolate memory capacity as the cause of every gap. See PC Gamer’s 2026 comparisons.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: preset changes the result

In PC Gamer’s 1080p Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 test at Ultra with Quality upscaling, the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB averaged 109 FPS and had a 70 FPS 1% low; the 16 GB version averaged 121 FPS with a 104 FPS 1% low. In a separate High-preset test, the RX 9060 XT 8 GB averaged 150 FPS with a 131 FPS 1% low. Those results show why a performance figure without its game and settings can mislead.

Indiana Jones and Battlefield 6: examples from a laptop test

Notebookcheck tested an XMG Fusion 16 (M25) with an 8 GB RTX 5070 Laptop GPU at 115 W and compared it with a 12 GB RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU at 140 W. It reported that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle could encounter crashes on the tested 8 GB laptop at 1080p High, while 1080p Medium ran without issues at slightly below 7 GB reported use. That is a specific test result, not a claim that every 8 GB card will crash at High settings.

In Notebookcheck’s Battlefield 6 testing, Full HD at the Overkill preset began just below 7 GB reported use; its article says reported use rose to nearly 13 GB during campaign play. Those figures concern different game contexts within the tested setup and should not be read as a universal memory requirement. The laptop comparison also changes both GPU model and power limit, so it is not a controlled test of capacity alone. Details are in Notebookcheck’s 8 GB laptop GPU test.

How to tell whether VRAM is actually the problem

A monitoring overlay showing almost all available VRAM in use does not by itself prove that the game needs all of it. NVIDIA explains that games can request available memory preemptively, and that actual need changes with the scene. Its explanation of VRAM allocation also describes possible pressure symptoms such as hitches during asset reloads, selective unloading, or slower asset loading from system RAM.

Look at gameplay consistency and asset behaviour, not just the memory meter. Repeated hitches, missing or delayed assets, or a marked improvement after reducing texture quality are more useful clues than a high allocation reading alone. Frame-time behaviour and 1% lows can reveal rough patches that an average FPS number hides, as PC Gamer’s Cyberpunk 2077 results demonstrate.

How to choose between an 8 GB card and a larger-memory option

Compare the whole graphics card and the games you play, not the VRAM number in isolation. A larger memory pool can help with demanding settings, but capacity alone does not establish that one card will be faster: architecture, memory bandwidth, clocks, cooling, and power also matter. For laptop GPUs in particular, power limits and cooling are relevant to performance.

  • Check your games and settings: Look for results at 1080p in the titles you actually play, including the texture preset and ray tracing setting you intend to use.
  • Compare both average FPS and 1% lows: The average describes overall throughput; the 1% low helps show whether performance has rougher dips.
  • Consider the price difference: Decide whether the step up to a larger-memory version is worth its actual price premium, rather than paying more for capacity without checking the card’s performance.
  • Account for your upgrade horizon: If you want to keep the card for years and avoid lowering settings, extra headroom may be valuable. If you are buying to a strict budget and accept tuning settings, 8 GB can remain a workable choice.
  • For laptops, compare the exact GPU and power configuration: A laptop GPU name does not describe its power limit or cooling on its own.

AMD identifies the Radeon RX 7600 as an 8 GB card for 1080p gaming, which is an example of how vendors position a product—not independent proof that it will meet every player’s settings or performance targets. See AMD’s VRAM and gaming information.
