Is 500GB Enough? How to Choose Between 500GB and 1TB

1TB is twice the nominal capacity of 500GB, so it is the more comfortable choice if you keep large games, media projects, or many files on your device. A 500GB drive can suit lighter use, a smaller local library, or a computer that can be expanded later. The better choice depends on what you store and your upgrade options—not on capacity alone, which does not determine speed.

What 500GB and 1TB mean in practice

Drive makers typically use decimal units: 1GB is one billion bytes, and 1TB is one trillion bytes. Some operating systems display capacity using binary units, so the figure shown may be lower than the label even before the operating system and formatting take their share. Apple explains that the “actual formatted capacity” is less than the stated capacity in its storage measurement guidance, published February 26, 2025.

Sony gives Windows examples in which a drive labeled approximately 500GB appears as approximately 465GB, while one labeled approximately 1TB appears as approximately 930GB. Recovery partitions can reduce the space available on the main volume further. These are examples, not guaranteed readings for every computer or operating-system version; see Sony’s capacity explanation, updated March 11, 2025.

How much can each capacity hold?

SanDisk’s illustrative estimates show what the nominal difference might mean for particular file types. They are alternatives, not amounts that can be added together to describe a mixed collection.

Nominal capacity Songs Full HD video Photos
500GB 125,000 30 hours 80,000
1TB (1,000GB) 250,000 60 hours 160,000

SanDisk’s estimates assume 3.5MB MP3 files, Full HD video at 30 frames per second in DV format at 145MB per minute, and 16MP JPEG photos at 5.5MB each. Actual counts and recording time vary with file size, compression, format, settings, and other factors. Treat the figures as illustrations, not a promise of what a drive will hold. The estimates appear in SanDisk’s SSD and HDD overview.

Which size fits your use?

Choose 500GB for lighter local storage

500GB may be reasonable if you mostly browse, use office applications, stream rather than save media, and keep a limited number of large files locally. This is a practical fit, not a universal minimum: installed software, saved files, and your operating system all affect the remaining space.

Choose 1TB for games and large applications

The extra capacity gives a larger game or application library more room and can mean less frequent uninstalling or file rotation. It does not guarantee that any particular set of games will fit; installation sizes vary and can change. Lenovo discusses 1TB SSDs and combined SSD/HDD configurations as gaming-storage options, with the suitable setup depending on the system and the user’s needs, in its storage configuration guide.

Choose more room for local photos and video projects

If you keep many photos, videos, or project files on the device, 1TB is generally more comfortable than 500GB. Video workflows can accumulate large source files and exports, so your recording settings and project habits matter. Microsoft’s PC and laptop buying guide advises people who save a lot of photos, videos, or documents to consider higher storage and gives a broad range of 256GB to 1TB or more; it is guidance, not a fixed requirement.

Consider 500GB if you can expand later

A computer with a compatible open slot, replaceable drive, or suitable external ports may let you start with 500GB and add storage when needed. Before buying an internal upgrade, confirm the exact model supports the drive’s form factor and interface, and check any thickness limits and upgrade restrictions. Compatibility cannot be inferred from capacity alone.

Capacity does not tell you how fast a drive is

A 1TB label means more space than a 500GB label, not higher speed. SSD versus HDD technology, the drive model, interface, host device, and workload affect performance. SanDisk describes SSDs as faster than HDDs in general, but that does not mean every 1TB drive is faster than every 500GB drive. Lenovo likewise discusses storage configuration and load times in relation to drive type and setup, rather than capacity by itself.

Compare the actual configurations before buying

  • Space needed: Estimate the files and applications you already keep locally, plus the additions you expect.
  • Usable space: Allow for the difference between the drive’s label and what the operating system reports, as well as operating-system files and recovery partitions.
  • Drive type and connection: Compare SSD with HDD separately from capacity, and verify that the device supports the drive or external connection.
  • Upgrade path: Check whether the drive is replaceable, whether an internal slot is available, and whether external storage suits your workflow.
  • Price per capacity: Compare current prices for equivalent drive types and models in your region. No current regional price comparison is established here, so there is no universal claim that either size is better value.

If your estimate points to 1TB, look for a 1TB SSD only after confirming the device supports the required internal form factor and interface, or choose a compatible external drive if you want portable or add-on storage. An external HDD may suit bulk files accessed infrequently; an external SSD may be preferable when portable performance matters. The right option depends on your ports, use, and speed needs.
