Is 2XKO Free to Play in 2026? Current Monetization, Champions and Cosmetics

Yes. 2XKO is free to download and play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Under Riot’s 2026 transition, every champion is unlocked, KO Points purchases have ended, and the former Battle Pass, seasons, Champion Tokens, and Ranked systems are being removed.

What remains for sale is optional customization: some avatar, profile, stage, chroma, and related items can still use Credits, while Riot’s digital Ultimate Bundle collects nearly all released cosmetics for a listed regional price. Servers are planned to stay online after active development ends in December 2026.

What “free to play” means for 2XKO

2XKO’s free-to-play status covers the game download and gameplay access, not a limited trial. Riot says the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S versions remain available to download at no charge. The company’s stated goal was to make the fighting-game genre easier for new players to discover, rather than require an upfront purchase before anyone can try it.

The 2026 transition also removes the main form of gameplay-related monetization. Patch 1.3.1 unlocks every champion for all players, so you do not have to buy a character, earn a character token, or complete a paid progression track to use the roster. That change is more important than the price of any cosmetic bundle: the playable cast is no longer a purchase decision.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

Online matches still depend on the game’s online service and your platform’s normal network requirements. Riot says the servers will remain online beyond 2026, while offline play is unaffected. That statement describes the current plan; Riot also notes that plans can change.

What you can buy after the 2026 transition

Champions are unlocked

Riot’s support FAQ says Patch 1.3.1 unlocks all champions for every player. The planned 2026 content schedule includes Lux and Samira, with Samira included in the Ultimate Bundle’s coverage after her release. Because champions are unlocked globally, spending money is not required to access gameplay characters.

KO Points are no longer sold

Riot disabled KO Points purchases on August 20, 2026. The transition removes KO Points from the active economy, so older guides that explain buying premium currency do not describe the current system. If you see instructions about purchasing KO Points or using them for a new Battle Pass, they refer to the earlier version of 2XKO.

Credits still cover selected customization

Credits remain usable for some avatar and profile items, stages, and selected chromas, according to Riot’s FAQ. The FAQ does not say that every cosmetic can be bought with Credits, so availability depends on the individual item. Credits are therefore a limited customization currency in the evergreen system, not a replacement for the former premium-currency store.

The Ultimate Bundle is an optional cosmetic collection

Riot describes the Ultimate Bundle as a digital collection containing nearly all released finishers, skins, skin chromas, and taunts for every champion through Lux and Samira after Samira’s release. Riot said the bundle would be updated in October with remaining skins and cosmetics. Its contents are therefore time-sensitive: the live store is the authority on what is included when you purchase.

Region Listed Ultimate Bundle price What the purchase represents
United States $39.99 Digital cosmetics collection; no champion or gameplay advantage
United Kingdom £33.99 Digital cosmetics collection; no champion or gameplay advantage
Euro pricing €39.99 Digital cosmetics collection; no champion or gameplay advantage

These are the regional prices listed in Riot’s 2026 support FAQ, not a guarantee that the amount or contents will never change. Taxes, platform billing rules, regional availability, and later store updates can affect the checkout experience. Check the in-game store before paying.

Which systems were removed, and when

The transition is easier to understand as a sequence of changes rather than as a normal seasonal reset.

How to play without spending money

  1. Choose a supported platform. Install the PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S version from the platform’s official game store.
  2. Download the game. The download itself remains free. Do not confuse optional store listings or legacy starter products with a required purchase of the base game.
  3. Complete the initial setup. Use the game’s current onboarding and tutorials. Older guides may mention Champion Tokens or token rewards; those systems were removed in the transition.
  4. Select any available champion. Under Patch 1.3.1’s rules, the champion roster is unlocked for all players, so you can choose based on play style rather than an unlock budget.
  5. Ignore the cosmetic store unless you want customization. You can play without buying Credits or the Ultimate Bundle. Store purchases affect appearance and profile presentation, not access to the roster.
  6. Check the current item description before using Credits. Credits apply only to certain avatar, profile, stage, and chroma items. The item page should identify whether Credits are accepted.

This route gives you the complete announced gameplay access without spending on virtual currency or a bundle. A connection is still relevant for online play, but Riot says offline play is unaffected by the development transition.

What happens if you bought KO Points or a Starter Edition

Riot announced refunds for eligible KO Points and Starter Edition purchases made before August 20, 2026. The process is not identical everywhere: Riot says the platform and region determine how a refund is handled. The general request deadline in the support FAQ is December 7, 2026, with possible regional exceptions.

To avoid a rejected or delayed request:

  • Identify the platform used for the purchase, such as PC, PlayStation, or Xbox.
  • Confirm the purchase date and product type. The published eligibility specifically covers qualifying KO Points and Starter Edition purchases made before the cutoff.
  • Use Riot’s current support instructions for your region and platform rather than applying another region’s procedure.
  • Submit the request before the stated deadline unless your region’s support page gives a different date.
  • Keep the transaction receipt or platform order record available if support asks for verification.

A refund policy is separate from the free-to-play question: the game remains downloadable even if you never bought anything, while a refund concerns an earlier paid transaction and its eligibility rules.

How the original monetization worked

Older 2XKO explanations described three currencies. Credits could be earned from missions, tutorials, Combo Trials, and matches. Champion Tokens could come from tutorials or Starter Editions. KO Points were purchased with real money and were used for certain premium purchases. That structure supported a free Battle Pass track alongside a paid track, paid bundles, and several ways to unlock new champions.

The earlier cosmetic catalog was broad. It included skins, chromas, stages, avatar accessories, stickers and emotes, taunts, finishers, player cards, and titles. Those descriptions explain why older videos and forum posts may refer to multiple currencies or a seasonal pass, but they should not be used as a shopping guide now. Riot’s 2026 transition explicitly removes KO Points, Champion Tokens, Battle Passes, seasons, and Ranked.

The important distinction is timing: historical monetization explains what players may remember, while the post-Patch 1.3.1 system determines what a new or returning player can do today. The current model is simpler: champions are open, most paid progression systems are gone, and selected cosmetics remain obtainable through Credits or the Ultimate Bundle.

Is the Ultimate Bundle necessary?

No. It is aimed at players who want a large cosmetic collection immediately. Because the bundle contains finishers, skins, chromas, and taunts rather than champions or power, a player interested only in matches can skip it without losing roster access.

The bundle may make sense when you value convenience and want many of the released cosmetics at once. It is less relevant if you prefer earning or selecting individual items, if you only care about a few characters, or if the current listing does not contain the items you want. Riot’s description uses “nearly all,” not “every item ever made,” so inspect the live contents instead of assuming complete ownership.

Remember that the listed amount is a regional digital price and that the FAQ said the bundle would be updated. A later store change can alter both the collection and its value to you. Treat the displayed price and item list at checkout as controlling.

What to expect after active development ends

Riot’s announced schedule separates development from service availability. Active development is planned to end in December 2026 after the final bug-fix work. Riot says no future patches are planned after the evergreen transition, but it also says servers will remain online to support online play. Offline play is described as unaffected.

That means “free” does not promise an endless stream of new seasons, ranked resets, balance patches, or Battle Passes. It describes the cost of obtaining and playing the game under the current plan. Service longevity and future content are separate questions, and Riot’s published plan answers them differently: continued availability is intended, while active development is scheduled to stop.

Bottom line for new and returning players

2XKO is free to download on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and the 2026 transition removes payment requirements for champions. KO Points, Champion Tokens, Battle Passes, seasons, and Ranked are no longer part of the announced active system. You can spend nothing and still access the roster; optional Credits purchases cover selected customization, and the Ultimate Bundle is a time-sensitive digital cosmetics collection priced at $39.99, £33.99, or €39.99 in Riot’s FAQ. If you made an eligible pre-transition purchase, follow the platform- and region-specific refund process before the applicable deadline.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
