Choose the Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo if you prefer a bagless robot that compacts debris onboard, stores it for up to 60 days according to iRobot, and does not require a self-emptying station. Both models vacuum, mop, map with ClearView LiDAR, and use carpet detection intended to keep rugs from being mopped. Neither can be called the objectively better cleaner from the available evidence: the published comparisons are manufacturer claims, not independent tests.
The short answer: dock convenience or a compact, bagless robot?
The practical difference is where dust goes after a cleaning run. The Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty sends debris from the robot into a separate AutoEmpty dock. The Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo mechanically compacts debris inside the robot itself. That choice affects floor space, consumables, emptying routine and the maximum hands-off interval iRobot advertises.

In a small home where every square foot matters, the 205’s lack of a dock is the decisive advantage. If the robot will clean frequently in a larger home and you would rather change a bag occasionally than handle the robot’s debris bin, the 105’s dock is the more convenient design.
First, make sure you are comparing the right Roomba 105
“Roomba 105” is a family name, not one single bundle. iRobot’s catalog includes a 105 Vac-only model and 105 Combo versions with and without an AutoEmpty dock. This comparison uses the Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty Dock at iRobot’s product page, not the Vac-only model or the 105 Combo sold without a dock.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before paying, check the exact model name, whether an AutoEmpty dock is in the box, and the regional listing. A listing that simply says “Roomba 105” may not include the station that creates the 75-day hands-free claim.
How debris storage changes everyday ownership
Roomba 105: a separate AutoEmpty station
After a run, the 105 can transfer collected debris into its dock. iRobot advertises up to 75 days of hands-free cleaning before the dock bag needs replacement. The interval is a manufacturer estimate, so actual time will vary with dirt levels, shedding, floor area and how often the robot runs.
The dock adds a consumable: replacement bags. iRobot’s product page also says the AutoEmpty dock bag traps 99% of allergens as small as 0.7 microns. That is a vendor-published filtration claim, not an independently verified household result. You still need to clean the robot, keep its sensors clear and wash or replace the mop pad as directed.
Roomba 205: onboard DustCompactor
The 205 uses a mechanical compactor inside the robot. iRobot says it stores debris for up to 60 days and describes the design as bagless, eliminating a separate self-emptying station and dock bags. When the onboard compartment is full, you remove and empty it yourself.
Onboard storage saves floor space and removes an ongoing bag purchase, but the emptying task happens at the robot rather than at a dock. Anyone sensitive to dust should plan where to open the compartment and may prefer doing it outdoors or over a lined bin.
Which storage design fits your routine?
- Pick the 105 dock when: you want the longest advertised hands-free interval, have room for the station and accept buying replacement bags.
- Pick the 205 when: you need the smallest setup, want to avoid bags, or prefer one self-contained appliance.
- Do not interpret 75 versus 60 days as a laboratory result: both figures are iRobot claims and are not independent measurements of capacity in identical homes.
Ownership cost: the purchase price is only part of the decision
The 105 and 205 have different ongoing-cost profiles even though exact consumable prices were not established. The 105 requires AutoEmpty dock bags, so budget for replacements and make sure bags for the exact dock configuration are available in your region. Its dock can reduce how often you handle dust, but every bag change is a recurring purchase and a disposal step.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The 205 avoids dock bags because its DustCompactor is bagless. You still have to empty the onboard compartment and follow routine filter guidance. The product page also lists a washable microfiber mop pad and an extra mop pad; washable parts can reduce disposable-pad use, but they still need regular washing, drying and eventual replacement. Both robots require care for brushes, wheels, sensors and filters, so “bagless” does not mean maintenance-free.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11When comparing deals, calculate the bundle you actually receive rather than comparing headline prices. A cheaper 105 listing without an AutoEmpty station is not equivalent to the 105 package discussed here. Conversely, a 205 listing should clearly identify the DustCompactor Combo. If two offers are close in price, decide whether your priority is recurring bags and less manual emptying or no dock and more hands-on emptying; the feature tradeoff may matter more than a temporary promotion.
Cleaning functions: the two Combo models cover the same basic jobs
According to the two product pages, both compared models can vacuum, mop, or vacuum and mop in one run. In the app, you can select the mode that matches the task: vacuum first when you need to collect loose debris, mop-only for a recently vacuumed hard floor, or combined cleaning for routine maintenance.
Mopping and carpet detection
Both models are described as using automatic carpet detection intended to avoid mopping rugs. This is useful in mixed-floor homes, but it is a stated feature rather than proof that every rug, threshold or unusual floor covering will be identified correctly. Keep cords, fringe and other obstacles managed, and use the app’s room controls to exclude areas where a wet pad is inappropriate.
The 105 page lists a microfiber mop pad. The 205 page lists a washable microfiber pad and an extra mop pad. Wash the pad after dirty runs and allow it to dry before storage; a damp, dirty pad can spread residue even when the robot’s navigation is working normally.
205 SmartScrub claim
iRobot says the 205’s SmartScrub provides “2x deeper scrubbing” than its standard vacuum-and-mop mode for coffee. That comparison is iRobot’s own product claim. It should not be treated as an independently measured improvement, and it does not establish that the 205 removes every stain better than the 105.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Navigation, mapping and app control
Both product pages list ClearView LiDAR mapping. LiDAR helps the robots build a map for room-based cleaning, but the product information does not establish real-home navigation accuracy, obstacle avoidance, noise, reliability or long-term durability. Those qualities can vary with furniture, reflective surfaces, clutter, thresholds and maintenance.
Both models provide app controls for practical scheduling and targeting. The 105 page specifically describes room targeting, scheduling, cleaning-pass selection, suction control and mopping-liquid controls. The 205 page also describes app controls. Exact menu names can change with app updates, so follow the labels shown for your model after pairing.
Price and configuration checks before purchase
At the time of the cited product-page snapshot, the Roomba 205 product page displayed a US price of $469.99. That is a time-specific manufacturer listing, not a guaranteed current or permanent street price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsiRobot’s Combo catalog showed multiple 105 configurations with different displayed prices and promotions. Because the catalog can show a Vac-only unit, a Combo without a dock and a Combo with AutoEmpty, compare the complete bundle rather than the model number alone.
- Confirm that the seller ships to your country and that the voltage and warranty match your region.
- Verify whether the listing includes the AutoEmpty dock, dock bag and mop accessories.
- Check the live price, stock status and promotion expiration immediately before ordering.
- For the 205, confirm that the listing is the DustCompactor Combo, not a similarly named configuration.
Space, maintenance and consumables
Floor-space planning
The 105 requires a permanent parking position for the robot and its AutoEmpty dock, with enough clearance for the robot to approach and leave. The 205 needs only its charging position. Measure the intended area, including room for you to remove a dock bag or lift the 205’s debris compartment.
Routine tasks common to both
- Keep LiDAR and other sensors free of dust so mapping and carpet detection can operate as intended.
- Remove hair and fibers from brushes and wheels.
- Empty or replace the debris-storage component when the app or robot indicates it is full.
- Wash and dry the microfiber mop pad; use only the liquid and method allowed for your model.
- Inspect thresholds and floor transitions after mapping, especially if the home has thick rugs or raised door sills.
Tasks unique to each design
With the 105, keep replacement AutoEmpty bags available and empty the dock area when changing one. With the 205, plan a regular manual emptying routine even if the compactor has not reached the advertised 60-day maximum. Homes with pets, tracked-in grit or frequent cleaning can fill storage sooner.

Step-by-step setup for either model
- Unpack the exact bundle. Confirm the model name, charging equipment, mop pad, filter and (for the 105 Combo + AutoEmpty) the separate dock and bag.
- Choose a clear charging location. Leave an unobstructed route to the charger or dock and keep it on a level surface.
- Install the app and pair the robot. Follow the in-app pairing flow, then install available firmware updates before relying on schedules.
- Prepare the floor. Pick up cables, small toys, clothing and loose objects that could block brushes or wheels. Secure rug fringe.
- Run an initial mapping pass. Start with floors reasonably clear so ClearView LiDAR can record rooms and transitions.
- Label rooms and set boundaries. Use room targeting for the 105 or 205 and exclude areas where mopping is unsuitable.
- Choose the first cleaning mode. Select vacuum-only, mop-only or combined cleaning. Fit the microfiber pad only when a mopping run is planned.
- Set a schedule and inspect the first runs. Watch how the robot handles thresholds, rugs and furniture before leaving it unattended for long periods.
Common buying and setup pitfalls
- Confusing a family name with a bundle: verify “Combo + AutoEmpty Dock” for the 105 and “DustCompactor Combo” for the 205.
- Assuming advertised capacity is universal: 75 and 60 days depend on how much debris your home produces and how often the robot runs.
- Skipping first-run supervision: carpet detection is intended to protect rugs, but inspect mixed-floor transitions and set room boundaries before unattended mopping.
- Forgetting consumables: the 105 needs compatible dock bags; the 205 still needs filter and pad care.
- Comparing a sale price without checking contents: promotions can apply to different 105 configurations, so confirm the station and accessories in the box.
Which model should different households buy?
Choose the Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty when…
- You have a dedicated spot for a dock and want the robot to transfer debris automatically.
- The advertised up-to-75-day interval is more useful to you than avoiding bags.
- You prefer replacing a dock bag occasionally instead of opening the robot’s debris compartment after many runs.
- You want app controls for room targeting, schedules, cleaning passes, suction and mopping-liquid settings as described by iRobot.
Choose the Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo when…
- You cannot spare floor space for a self-emptying station.
- You want a bagless setup with debris compacted inside the robot.
- You are comfortable manually emptying the robot and maintaining its washable mop pad.
- You are interested in iRobot’s SmartScrub claim for coffee, while understanding that it is not independent test data.
Neither is the clear choice when…
- You need proven deep-cleaning, noise or navigation rankings. The cited information does not provide independent comparative tests for those factors.
- You have unusual floor coverings or complex thresholds and expect carpet detection to solve every edge case automatically.
- You are comparing a different 105 bundle. The dock-versus-onboard conclusion applies to the 105 Combo + AutoEmpty and 205 DustCompactor Combo specified here.
A practical decision checklist
Answer these questions in order:
- Can you dedicate space to a dock? If no, select the 205.
- Do you want to avoid disposable bags? If yes, select the 205.
- Would automatic transfer be worth occasional bag replacement? If yes, select the 105 Combo + AutoEmpty.
- Will you mop mixed carpet and hard floors? Both list carpet detection, but set room boundaries and inspect initial runs.
- Is the live price difference meaningful? Check the exact US or regional bundle immediately before purchase; catalog prices and promotions change.
What the published specifications do not answer
The available iRobot pages establish the storage designs and listed features, but they do not provide an independent head-to-head score for pickup on carpets, dried stains, battery endurance, decibel levels, mapping recovery, obstacle avoidance, repair rates or multi-year ownership cost. They also do not establish that either model is superior for every home. Treat the 75-day, 60-day, allergen-filtration and 2x-scrubbing figures as manufacturer statements with the qualifications attached above.
Bottom line
Buy the Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo for a simpler footprint, bagless onboard storage and up to 60 days of debris capacity as claimed by iRobot. Buy the Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty Dock when a separate station is acceptable and you value its advertised up-to-75-day hands-free debris transfer. Both provide the core vacuum-and-mop functions, LiDAR mapping and carpet detection listed by iRobot, so the storage architecture—not a proven cleaning-performance advantage—should drive the decision.
