NordVPN is the stronger choice for most people who prioritize privacy depth and security features. It offers more specialized options, including Double VPN, Onion over VPN, obfuscated servers and a larger reported network. IPVanish is the better fit for a large household or many-device user because the comparison reviewed here lists unlimited simultaneous connections, and its dated two-year introductory price was lower.
That verdict is conditional. Both providers claim no-logs policies and have undergone independent reviews, but audit scope, report access, dates, ownership history, renewal pricing and app support all matter. The most defensible choice depends on the devices you use and the protections you will actually enable.

What the comparison actually establishes
A VPN can hide your traffic from the local network and your internet provider, but the VPN company becomes an important point of trust. The key questions are therefore not just “Which app is faster?” or “Which company has more servers?” They are:
- What data does the provider say it does not retain?
- Has that claim been examined, when was it examined, and can subscribers see the report?
- Which security features are available on your operating system and plan?
- How many devices can connect at once?
- What will the subscription cost after the introductory period?
- What legal jurisdiction and ownership history should you take into account?
On those measures, NordVPN has the broader privacy feature set and a larger reported network. IPVanish has the more generous connection limit and, in the September 22, 2026 price snapshot used for this comparison, the lower two-year introductory rate.

No-logs claims and independent audits
What NordVPN says and what has been reviewed
NordVPN’s policy, quoted in Tom’s Guide’s NordVPN review, says: "We do not store used bandwidth, traffic logs, IP addresses, or browsing data." That is the provider’s policy statement, not a permanent independent guarantee.
NordVPN says it has completed six independent no-logs examinations. It describes the first two as examinations by PwC Switzerland and later assessments, including its sixth review in 2025, as work by Deloitte. The useful detail is the sequence and recency: a series of reviews gives more current evidence than a single old attestation, but every review still covers a defined period, systems and procedures.
IPVanish’s reported audits
Tom’s Guide reports that IPVanish’s no-logs policy was examined by Leviathan Security in 2022 and by Schellman Compliance in 2025. The same review says the full IPVanish reports were not available until after subscribing. That is a transparency difference, not proof that IPVanish lacks an audit. It means a prospective customer may have less public material to inspect before paying.
When comparing the two, ask what the assessor tested, which products and infrastructure were included, the dates covered, and whether the report is a factual procedures report or a broader assurance opinion. Counting audits without checking scope can make two very different reviews look equivalent.
IPVanish’s historical disclosure
There is a significant historical context that should not be confused with current ownership. The comparison reports that IPVanish provided user information to US authorities in 2016 despite the no-logging claim in force at that time. It also reports that Ziff Davis took over in 2019 and that independent audits followed under the later ownership.

The 2016 event is not evidence that the current owner will repeat the same conduct, but it is relevant to a trust assessment. Readers who consider historical behavior important should weigh the date, ownership change and subsequent audit record rather than treating the incident as either irrelevant or conclusive.
Jurisdiction and ownership: useful context, not a verdict
IPVanish is reported as US-headquartered and owned by Ziff Davis. NordVPN says it is based in Panama. Jurisdiction can affect the legal process a company may face and the laws governing its corporate records, but it does not by itself establish whether a provider keeps activity logs. A company in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction can still retain data, while a company elsewhere may operate systems designed not to create useful records.
Use jurisdiction as one part of your threat model. Someone seeking protection from public Wi-Fi interception may care more about a reliable kill switch and secure protocols. A journalist protecting sources may place greater weight on verifiable data-retention practices, audit scope and the provider’s response to legal demands.
Security protocols and privacy features
Core protections available from both
Both services support modern VPN protocols and include a kill switch. A kill switch is designed to block internet traffic if the encrypted tunnel drops, preventing a brief fallback connection from exposing the device’s ordinary IP address. Check the app’s behavior on your operating system: some clients let you block all traffic, while others apply the switch only to selected applications or when the VPN is connected.
IPVanish supports WireGuard and OpenVPN, among other protocol choices. It also offers split tunneling, with availability and behavior varying by platform. Split tunneling lets selected apps use the normal connection while other traffic remains inside the VPN; that can help with local services, but traffic excluded from the tunnel is not protected by the VPN.

NordVPN’s additional routing choices
NordVPN uses NordLynx, its provider-described protocol based on WireGuard, and also supports OpenVPN. Its feature set includes:
- Double VPN: routes traffic through two VPN servers instead of one, adding an extra hop at the cost of speed and latency.
- Onion over VPN: sends traffic through the VPN and then into the Onion network, combining the two routing layers for use cases that justify additional complexity.
- Obfuscated servers: designed to make VPN traffic less recognizable on networks that try to identify or restrict VPN connections.
- NordWhisper: a provider-described protocol intended for networks that restrict or interfere with conventional VPN connections.
These options are not guaranteed to appear on every app, operating system or subscription tier. Before choosing NordVPN for a specialized feature, open the product documentation for your device and confirm that the option is supported there.
What extra routing does—and does not—do
Double VPN and Onion over VPN can add separation from a single server or network, but neither makes you anonymous by itself. Your accounts, browser fingerprint, device identifiers and the sites you visit can still identify you. Extra hops also create more points where a connection can slow or fail. Use them for a specific threat model rather than leaving every advanced option enabled by default.
Connection limits and network size
The practical difference most households notice first is the number of simultaneous connections. The cited September 2026 comparison lists IPVanish as unlimited and NordVPN as 10. “Unlimited” still depends on the provider’s terms and fair-use controls, and a single account does not guarantee that every device supports every feature.

A larger network can make it easier to find a nearby server or a location suitable for a particular service, but server count is not a direct measure of privacy. Capacity, ownership of the hardware, routing quality and the app’s ability to select a stable endpoint all affect the experience.

What the AV-TEST result means
AV-TEST’s November 2024 evaluation reported an overall security-feature detection rate of 83.42% for NordVPN and 46.96% for IPVanish. Those figures describe the security-feature test AV-TEST performed. They are not comprehensive scores for VPN privacy, encryption strength, speed, no-logs compliance or the providers’ entire products.
Use the result as one dated laboratory datapoint, not a final ranking. Test methodology, the app versions evaluated and the definition of a detected security feature all matter. A provider can perform well in one category and still be a poor fit if its client lacks a feature you need or if its renewal terms do not suit your budget.
Price: the published snapshot is introductory
In the September 22, 2026 comparison, the two-year introductory prices were listed as:

These are not verified live checkout prices. Promotions can change, and a two-year offer may be billed as a larger amount up front rather than as a monthly charge. Before paying, check the currency, tax, billing interval, renewal amount, cancellation window and whether optional extras are preselected. Compare the renewal price—not just the first-term equivalent—if you expect to keep the account.

Which VPN should you choose?
Choose NordVPN when specialized privacy options come first
NordVPN is the more suitable choice if you want Double VPN, Onion over VPN, obfuscated servers or a larger reported network, and your devices are supported. Its series of no-logs examinations, including a 2025 Deloitte review described by the provider, gives a comparatively extensive timeline of independent review. The AV-TEST result also favored NordVPN in that particular 2024 security-feature evaluation, although it should not be generalized into an all-purpose privacy score.
Check that the NordLynx, OpenVPN and advanced-routing options you want are present in the app for your operating system. Some features may be limited by platform or plan.
Choose IPVanish when connection count and first-term price matter most
IPVanish is the practical candidate for a household with more than 10 devices connected at once, provided its apps support every device you plan to use. The dated comparison also placed its Essential two-year introductory price below NordVPN’s Basic offer. Its WireGuard and OpenVPN support covers common protocol needs, and split tunneling can be useful when selected applications must reach local services directly.
Before subscribing, decide whether the limited public access to its full audit reports is acceptable and consider the 2016 disclosure history in its proper context: it occurred under previous ownership, while Ziff Davis ownership is reported from 2019 onward and later audits are reported in 2022 and 2025.

A practical buying checklist
- Count simultaneous devices. Include phones, computers, tablets, streaming devices and routers that may connect at the same time. If the total exceeds 10, IPVanish’s listed unlimited allowance is the clearer fit; otherwise, both limits may be sufficient.
- List the features you will actually use. Mark whether you need split tunneling, Double VPN, Onion over VPN, obfuscation or a protocol for restricted networks. Confirm support in the exact app and operating system rather than assuming a feature is universal.
- Read the current privacy policy and audit information. Note what data is excluded, the date and scope of the latest review, and whether the report is publicly accessible before purchase.
- Match the provider to your threat model. Public Wi-Fi protection, bypassing a restrictive network and protecting a sensitive source are different problems. Do not select an advanced routing mode merely because it appears in a feature list.
- Check checkout terms. Verify the total charge, currency, taxes, introductory period, renewal price, cancellation method and refund conditions. The September 2026 figures are promotional snapshot prices, not a promise of today’s checkout total.
- Test the failure behavior. After installation, enable the kill switch, disconnect the VPN and confirm that traffic is blocked as expected. Then test local-network services and any split-tunneled apps so you know what is and is not protected.
- Review account and device security. Use a unique password, enable available multi-factor authentication, keep the client updated and remove old devices from the account. A well-designed VPN cannot compensate for a compromised account or outdated operating system.
Common mistakes that weaken VPN privacy
- Treating “no logs” as an absolute promise. Policies describe intended practices; audits examine a defined scope and period. Read both.
- Assuming a different country guarantees privacy. Jurisdiction affects legal context, not automatically the data a company stores.
- Using the wrong protocol for the network. A fast protocol that is blocked is less useful than a supported option that connects reliably. Try the provider’s documented alternatives.
- Forgetting the kill switch is device-specific. Enabling it on a laptop does not protect a phone, browser extension or another household device.
- Confusing VPN encryption with anonymity. Logged-in accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints and malware can still identify activity.
- Comparing server numbers as if they were identical. IPVanish’s figure is expressed in locations, while NordVPN’s is expressed in countries; the units and networks can change.
- Budgeting from the promotional rate forever. A low first-term equivalent can be followed by a higher renewal charge. Record the renewal date and amount when you subscribe.

For privacy and security breadth, NordVPN is the stronger overall recommendation: it combines more specialized routing features, a larger reported network and a longer sequence of provider-reported no-logs examinations.
