For most people, the practical answer is to use both whenever your network supports both. IPv6 is the newer Internet Protocol, with 128-bit addresses and updated protocol capabilities; IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses and remains necessary for IPv4-only services and networks. A dual-stack connection lets a device use IPv6 where the complete path supports it while retaining IPv4 compatibility.
What IPv4 and IPv6 are
IPv4 and IPv6 are two versions of the Internet Protocol (IP), the addressing and packet-delivery system used to move traffic between networks. IPv6 was “designed as the successor to IP version 4 (IPv4),” according to RFC 8200, the IETF’s IPv6 specification published in July 2017.

The defining difference is address size. IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, providing a vastly larger address space for networks, devices and services. That scale is important because the global pool of unassigned IPv4 addresses was exhausted, a transition issue the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) described in a statement published on 7 November 2016.
IPv6 is not simply IPv4 with extra digits. The newer protocol also changes header handling and includes capabilities such as address autoconfiguration, scoped multicast and anycast. Those changes affect how networks are designed and operated, even though users often encounter both versions through the same browser, operating system or application.

IPv4 and IPv6 compared
| Aspect | IPv4 | IPv6 | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address length | 32 bits | 128 bits | IPv6 provides a much larger address space for assigning addresses to networks and endpoints. |
| Role in the transition | The established protocol that many destinations still require | The successor protocol being deployed alongside IPv4 | Compatibility remains a real requirement; replacing IPv4 everywhere is not an immediate switch. |
| Protocol capabilities | Earlier IP header and addressing model | Revised header handling, address autoconfiguration, multicast scope and anycast support | Network equipment, operating systems, applications and operational procedures must understand the IPv6 behavior they use. |
| Interoperability | Does not directly communicate with IPv6 as the same protocol | Does not directly communicate with IPv4 as the same protocol | An IPv4-only endpoint and an IPv6-only endpoint need a suitable transition arrangement. |
| Common coexistence model | Runs on a node alongside IPv6 | Runs on a node alongside IPv4 | Dual stack allows a device to send and receive using both versions. |
| Security and privacy considerations | Address translation and other controls may affect endpoint visibility | Reduced reliance on address translation can make endpoints more directly visible and raises privacy considerations | Neither protocol is automatically safe or unsafe; firewall policy, address configuration and monitoring determine the result. |
Why IPv4 and IPv6 do not simply connect to each other
Although both protocols carry Internet traffic, an IPv4 packet and an IPv6 packet are not the same protocol format. An IPv4-only service cannot automatically accept an IPv6 connection, and an IPv6-only service cannot automatically accept an IPv4 connection. A network that contains both kinds of endpoints therefore needs a coexistence or transition mechanism.
The most straightforward arrangement is dual stack. A dual-stack host has IPv4 and IPv6 capability and can use the version supported by the destination and the path through the networks between them. This is different from translating every connection from one protocol to the other: both protocols remain available, and the endpoint chooses an appropriate one when the surrounding infrastructure supports it.
End-to-end support is essential. Your computer may have IPv6 enabled, yet a connection can still use IPv4 if the router, ISP, name service, application, intermediate network or destination does not provide IPv6. Conversely, an IPv6-capable destination is useful only when your own access network can reach it over IPv6. Enabling a setting on one device cannot create support that is missing elsewhere.
What “dual stack” means for a home network
In a dual-stack home network, the router and connected devices retain IPv4 while also receiving or configuring IPv6. Applications can then use IPv6 for destinations reachable over IPv6 and IPv4 for destinations that are available only over IPv4. RFC 4213 defines the operation of dual-stack nodes, and RFC 6180 describes dual-stack deployment as a transition and coexistence approach.

This arrangement is why turning off IPv4 is usually the wrong first step. Removing IPv4 can make an otherwise healthy device unable to reach IPv4-only destinations, even if IPv6 works perfectly for other sites. Keeping both protocols available preserves the widest compatibility while the transition continues.
Dual stack does add operational work for network owners. Administrators must account for addressing, DNS or other name-service records, firewall rules, monitoring and application behavior for both protocols. A policy that is correct for IPv4 is not automatically correct for IPv6 simply because the same device handles both.
Which should you use at home?
Leave the normal provider configuration in place
For a typical home user, keep the router and operating system’s normal network configuration unless you are diagnosing a specific problem. If your ISP and equipment support IPv6, allowing it to operate alongside IPv4 is generally the sensible compatibility posture. There is no universal switch that every reader must flip, and availability varies by geography, provider, router, operating system, application and destination.

- Your ISP must provide IPv6 service to your connection.
- Your router or gateway must support and correctly configure IPv6.
- Your computer, phone or other endpoint must have IPv6 capability enabled.
- The application and its name-service configuration must be able to discover and use IPv6 destinations.
- The remote service and the networks between you and it must offer an IPv6 path.
If any link in that chain lacks support, the connection may use IPv4 instead. That is normal coexistence behavior, not proof that IPv6 is broken.
Do not choose based on a promised speed or security win
The standards and deployment material do not establish a universal speed advantage for either protocol. Performance depends on the particular access network, route, service and configuration. Similarly, IPv6 is not automatically more secure, and IPv4 is not automatically safer because it may involve address translation. Compare the actual controls and path in your network rather than treating the protocol label as a security or performance guarantee.
Should you turn off IPv4 to use IPv6?
No. Dual-stack operation is specifically intended to let IPv4 and IPv6 coexist. Disabling IPv4 does not “activate” IPv6 in an ISP, router or destination that lacks IPv6 support; it only removes one way for your device to connect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConsider an IPv4 change only for a documented troubleshooting or policy reason, and first confirm that every service you need is reachable over IPv6. For a household, that means checking the ISP, router, devices and important destinations. For an organization, it also means validating applications, DNS, firewalls, monitoring and remote-access arrangements. If an IPv6-only test causes failures, restoring the previous dual-stack configuration is the compatibility-minded recovery step.

How IPv6 changes network operations
Address assignment and autoconfiguration
IPv6 includes address-autoconfiguration capabilities that change how endpoints can obtain addresses and how administrators plan networks. Autoconfiguration can reduce manual assignment work, but it does not remove the need to document address policy, secure the network and monitor what endpoints are doing.
Multicast scope
IPv6 defines multicast scopes so that multicast traffic can be limited to an appropriate area. The scope is part of network design: administrators need to understand where multicast should exist and ensure that filtering and monitoring match that intent.
Anycast
IPv6 supports anycast addressing, in which the same service address can be used at multiple locations and traffic is delivered to an appropriate instance according to routing. Anycast is an operational capability, not a promise that every IPv6 service uses it or that it will improve every route.

Header handling
IPv6 revises IP header handling. Equipment that forwards or inspects traffic therefore needs IPv6-aware software and policies. A network can have apparently compatible endpoints while an intermediate firewall, monitor or application component still mishandles IPv6 traffic.
Best Value
Security and privacy: what actually changes
IPv6’s larger address space and reduced reliance on address translation can make endpoints more directly visible. RFC 8200 calls out privacy considerations in this context. Visibility is not the same as exposure: a correctly configured firewall and well-defined inbound policy can control which traffic reaches an endpoint.
Address translation should not be treated as a complete security boundary. Its presence or absence does not replace packet filtering, endpoint hardening, authentication, patching, logging or incident response. When enabling IPv6, apply an explicit IPv6 firewall policy, confirm that unwanted inbound traffic is blocked, and include IPv6 in monitoring and troubleshooting procedures.
Privacy also depends on address configuration and network policy. The protocol alone does not make a connection categorically private or non-private. Review how addresses are assigned, how long they remain associated with a device, which logs are retained and which services are exposed.
How far along is IPv6 deployment?
IPv6 deployment is a transition and coexistence process, not a single worldwide cutover date. In RFC 9386, an IETF deployment-status report published in 2023, about 50% of responding network operators said dual stack appeared to be the most widely deployed IPv6 solution. That figure is an operator-poll estimate presented in a deployment report; it is not a current global percentage of users, networks or traffic.
The IAB’s 7 November 2016 statement recorded that the unassigned IPv4 address pool had been exhausted and that dual-stack and IPv6-only deployments were increasing. The statement describes the direction of the transition, not the end of IPv4 connectivity. Its institutional wording was: “The IETF as well as other SDOs need to ensure that their standards do not assume IPv4.”
Those dates also explain why local experience differs. One ISP may provide IPv6 routinely, while another may still offer predominantly IPv4 service. A destination can be reachable over IPv6 in one country or network and only over IPv4 in another. Check current documentation from your own provider and equipment manufacturer before making a local deployment decision.
Quick Recap
Choosing an approach for different readers
Home users
- Keep IPv4 enabled.
- Allow IPv6 when your ISP and router support it.
- Use the router’s documented IPv6 configuration rather than guessing at advanced settings.
- If a site or application fails after an IPv6 change, test with the previous configuration and involve the ISP or equipment vendor.
Small offices and administrators
- Inventory routers, firewalls, operating systems, applications and monitoring tools for IPv6 support.
- Confirm that DNS or other name-service records expose the intended protocol and destination.
- Create and review IPv6 firewall rules separately; do not assume an IPv4 rule covers IPv6 traffic.
- Test internal and external services from both protocol paths before changing production policy.
- Train support staff to identify whether a failure is specific to IPv4, IPv6 or the transition mechanism.
Application and service owners
- Verify that listeners, access controls, logging and monitoring handle IPv6 addresses.
- Test name resolution and connection behavior when both protocol versions are available.
- Confirm that dependencies, APIs and remote-access systems are reachable over the paths your users will actually have.
- Do not advertise an IPv6-only service until the intended audience and operational tooling have been validated.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the failing destination. Determine whether the problem affects one service or many. A single destination may simply be IPv4-only or have an IPv6 configuration problem.
- Check local capability. Confirm that the operating system reports IPv6 support and that it has an IPv6 address configured. If it does not, inspect the router and ISP service before changing application settings.
- Check the router and access service. Verify that IPv6 is supported, enabled according to the provider’s instructions and not blocked by an incompatible firmware or firewall setting.
- Check name service. Confirm that the destination’s relevant records and your resolver path provide the information needed to select IPv6. A name can resolve successfully while the resulting IPv6 route is unavailable.
- Check the path. Test whether traffic can travel through the ISP and intermediate networks to the destination. Local IPv6 configuration alone cannot repair a missing upstream route.
- Compare with IPv4. If IPv4 works and IPv6 fails, keep dual stack in place while isolating the IPv6 component. Do not disable IPv4 as a substitute for finding the fault.
- Review policy and logs. Inspect IPv6 firewall rules, endpoint controls and monitoring records. Include both protocol versions in support tickets so the provider or administrator can reproduce the correct path.
What to remember when deciding
- IPv6’s primary defining difference is its 128-bit address space, compared with IPv4’s 32-bit space.
- IPv6 also changes protocol behavior through revised header handling, autoconfiguration, multicast scope and anycast.
- IPv4 and IPv6 are separate protocols; an IPv4-only endpoint and an IPv6-only endpoint need a transition arrangement to communicate.
- Dual stack is a common coexistence model and lets a device use whichever protocol the complete path supports.
- There is no universal requirement to disable IPv4, and doing so can reduce compatibility.
- Neither protocol guarantees faster connections or automatic security. Configuration, routing, applications and policy determine the result.
- For a home connection, retain the provider’s normal dual-stack-capable configuration when available. For managed networks, validate endpoint, DNS, firewall, monitoring and application readiness before an IPv6-only change.
