In a book-built issue, investors enter bids inside the published price band; demand at each price helps determine the final issue price. You choose whole application lots, submit through an approved intermediary, and authorize either an ASBA bank block or a UPI mandate. A cut-off bid lets an eligible retail investor accept whatever final price is discovered within the band, but it never guarantees an allotment.
The current prospectus is the controlling document for the band, lot size, retail limits, eligibility, application dates and allotment rules. Those values differ from one IPO to another, so do not carry a lot size, quota percentage or maximum application limit from an earlier issue into a new one.

What an IPO bid actually does
A book-built IPO gathers demand before the shares are listed. The issuer and its advisers publish a price band, such as a lower and upper price per share, together with an issue-defined lot size. Investors then submit bids stating how many lots they want and the price they are willing to pay. The book records demand at different prices.

Your application is then assessed against that price and against the shares available in your investor category. A bid is not a purchase guarantee: even a correctly submitted application can receive fewer shares or none if demand is high.

Price band and final issue price
The band is a range, not two separate products. A bid must use a permitted price inside that range, unless the application screen offers a cut-off choice. The final price is discovered after bids are collected. It can be equal to the lower or upper end, or fall between them, subject to the terms in the offer document.
If you name a specific price below the final discovered price, your bid may not qualify for allotment because you did not agree to pay the price at which the issue clears. A bid at or above the final price is considered under the issue’s rules, but available shares and category demand still determine whether you receive anything.
Quantity is expressed in lots
A lot is the fixed application unit defined for that IPO. If one lot contains 40 shares, an application must request 40, 80, 120 shares and so on; you cannot request an arbitrary number such as 55 shares. The offer document and application interface establish the exact lot size and the permitted range of lots.

bid price × shares per lot × number of lots
For example, in a hypothetical offer with a ₹90–₹100 band and 40 shares per lot, one lot at ₹100 represents ₹4,000. Three lots at that price represent ₹12,000. This is an illustration, not a value for any particular IPO; use the current offer’s figures when you calculate your own application.
Cut-off price: what you agree to and what you do not
A cut-off bid does not name ₹90, ₹95 or ₹100. Instead, it tells the issue that you will accept the final discovered price anywhere within the announced band. This option is generally available to eligible retail individual investors when the offer permits it; the application form or intermediary screen should identify whether it is available for your category.
The main benefit is avoiding a rejection caused solely by entering a price below the eventual final price. You do not need to predict where in the band the book will clear. The amount blocked is normally calculated using the upper-band price until the final price is known; the exact handling is shown by the bank or UPI flow. If the final price is lower, only the allotted amount at that final price is debited and the excess block is released under the applicable process.

Cut-off is not a priority queue and does not improve your position in an oversubscribed category. It does not bypass the retail limit, create extra lots, or guarantee shares. If demand exceeds the shares reserved for retail applicants, a valid cut-off application can still be allotted partially or receive no shares.

Retail quota and oversubscription
The retail quota is the portion of the issue reserved for eligible individual applicants under the offer’s allocation structure. The percentage is not universal: it varies by issue and must be read from the current prospectus. Other categories may have their own reservations and allocation rules, so a headline subscription figure for the whole IPO does not tell you your personal probability of allotment.
What oversubscription means
An IPO is oversubscribed when applications in a category request more shares than that category has available. The registrar then applies the published basis of allotment. Depending on the numbers and rules, an applicant may receive the requested lots, fewer lots, one lot, or no shares. A technically correct form can therefore end with a zero allotment.
Do not interpret an oversubscription multiple as a promise that you will receive one divided by that number of the shares. The calculation is category-specific, can involve rounding and minimum-allotment rules, and is finalized only through the approved basis of allotment. The result published for the issue is the authoritative record.
Why applying for more lots may not solve the problem
You may request multiple lots only within the retail maximum and other limits in the offer document. In a heavily oversubscribed retail book, additional lots can increase the amount blocked without ensuring a proportionally larger allotment. The eventual basis may cap or reduce allocations, so decide the number of lots from your available funds and intended exposure rather than from an assumption that more lots guarantees more shares.

How to bid in an IPO, step by step
- Read the current offer document. Confirm the price band, lot size, minimum and maximum lots for your category, eligibility, application opening and closing dates, permitted bid types, and the stated allotment and refund process. Check that the issue is open to your investor category and that your identity, demat and bank details meet the requirements.
- Work out the application amount. Multiply the chosen bid price by the shares in one lot and by the number of lots. For a cut-off application, follow the intermediary’s displayed blocking amount, which may use the upper-band price while the final price is pending. Keep enough available balance for the entire block and account for any bank or UPI limits that could prevent authorization.
- Choose a bid type. Enter a specific price inside the band, or select cut-off if it is offered for your category. Select whole lots only. Review the quantity and price together; a correct price with an invalid lot multiple can still lead to rejection.
- Submit through a permitted channel. Use the application route identified in the offer and by your registered intermediary. The route may use an ASBA application through a participating bank or a UPI-based application in which a mandate is created for your bank account. Enter the same PAN, demat and bank information associated with the application.
- Authorize the funds block. An ASBA application requires your bank authorization. A UPI application requires you to approve the mandate in your UPI app within the stated window. Merely filling in the form is not enough; an unapproved or failed authorization leaves the application incomplete.
- Save the acknowledgement and monitor status. Keep the application number, bid details and mandate reference. Before the closing time, verify that the intermediary shows the bid as submitted and that the amount is blocked or the UPI mandate is active. If a correction is allowed, use the channel and deadline specified in the offer document rather than sending a duplicate application.
- Check allotment and account movement. After the basis of allotment is finalized, use the registrar or intermediary result service identified for that IPO. The allotted amount is debited; any amount corresponding to shares not allotted is released under the ASBA or UPI process. If the mandate remains blocked after the stated release period, contact the bank or intermediary with your reference number.
ASBA and UPI mandate flows compared
| Point | ASBA bank application | UPI application |
|---|---|---|
| How funds are committed | The application amount is blocked in the linked bank account. | A UPI mandate requests authorization to block the application amount in the linked bank account. |
| When money leaves the account | Only the amount for shares actually allotted is debited; the remaining block is released under the process. | The amount for shares actually allotted is debited after allotment; the unused portion of the mandate is released or revoked under the process. |
| What you must check | That the bank accepted the ASBA request and the block appears in the account. | That the mandate was approved in the UPI app and shows the correct amount, application and expiry details. |
| Typical failure point | Insufficient available balance, incorrect account details or a bank-side rejection. | Missed approval, an expired mandate, an incorrect UPI ID or a bank/UPI limit. |
Both methods are funding controls rather than separate allotment categories. Choosing ASBA instead of UPI, or vice versa, does not give your application a better place in the queue. Use the route you can authorize correctly and monitor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many lots can you apply for?
Start with the minimum application: one complete lot. The prospectus then states the maximum quantity permitted for retail applicants and any value ceiling or other category condition. The retail maximum can differ between issues, so do not infer it from the number of shares in one lot.
To calculate the number of lots you can fund at a specific price, divide your available application amount by the amount for one lot and round down to a whole number. Then apply the offer document’s retail maximum and any intermediary or payment limit. For a cut-off bid, use the blocking amount displayed by the application system, not an estimate based on a lower point in the band.
Keep the calculation separate from the allotment expectation. The number of lots you request is the number you offer to buy, not the number you will necessarily receive. If the category is oversubscribed, the published basis may allocate fewer lots or none.

Reading the allotment outcome
Full allotment
You receive all or the stated portion of the lots requested. The amount corresponding to the allotted shares is debited at the final issue price, and the shares are credited to the demat account named in the application.
Partial allotment
You receive fewer shares or lots than requested. The debit is limited to the allotted quantity at the final price. The balance that was blocked for unallotted shares should be released through the relevant ASBA or UPI process.
No allotment
No shares are credited and no purchase amount should be finally debited for the issue. A temporary block can remain visible until the bank or UPI release is processed, so keep the application reference until the funds are available again.
Recommended Free Tools
Bid rejected or treated as invalid
Invalid quantity, a price outside the band, missing authorization, incomplete identity or demat details, duplicate or otherwise non-compliant applications can prevent consideration. The offer document and intermediary notification determine the specific reason. A cut-off selection cannot cure a missing mandate or an ineligible application.
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
- Using an old lot size or band: Re-open the current prospectus and application screen immediately before submitting.
- Entering a price below the eventual final price: Use cut-off when it is available and suitable for your category, or choose a specific price with the risk clearly understood.
- Requesting fractional lots: Convert the desired quantity into complete issue-defined lots.
- Confusing the retail quota with the whole issue: Read the category allocation and apply only within the retail limits stated for that issue.
- Assuming a valid bid guarantees shares: Oversubscription can produce a partial or zero allotment even when every field is correct.
- Leaving a mandate unapproved: Check the UPI app or bank account for the authorization status before the deadline.
- Ignoring blocked funds: Do not treat a block as a completed debit, but do keep enough balance until allotment and release processing finish.
- Submitting multiple applications without checking the rules: Follow the offer’s instructions on permitted applications and identifiers; an extra form can create a compliance problem rather than improve allocation.
A practical pre-submission checklist
- Current prospectus opened and issue dates confirmed.
- Eligible investor category confirmed.
- Price band and final bid price, or cut-off selection, checked.
- Whole-lot quantity checked against the retail maximum.
- Application amount calculated at the relevant bid or blocking price.
- Linked PAN, demat account, bank account and UPI details verified.
- Funds available for the full block and any applicable bank or UPI limit checked.
- ASBA block or UPI mandate authorized and visible as successful.
- Acknowledgement, application number and mandate reference saved.
- Allotment result and fund release scheduled for checking through the issue’s stated channels.
The safest way to interpret any IPO application is to separate three decisions: the price you are willing to accept, the whole lots you can fund within the stated limits, and the category’s actual allotment capacity. The prospectus and the published basis of allotment control each of those decisions.
