Switching between iPhone and Android changes the setup process, app accounts, messaging behavior, and sometimes how your phone number is activated. A transfer can bring over much of your personal data, but it is not a perfect clone: purchases, credentials, cloud-only media, eSIM service, and some app data may need separate work. Start the migration during the new phone’s initial setup, keep both phones powered and connected, and confirm your carrier’s SIM or eSIM procedure before disconnecting the old device.
The two directions are not identical. Apple’s Move to iOS flow is built into iPhone setup, while Google’s Android transfer choices depend more heavily on the Android manufacturer and whether you use a cable or a supported wireless path. The practical differences below show what moves, what requires manual steps, what can break temporarily, and how to recover.

What actually changes when you move platforms?
Your phone number and many personal records can remain the same, but the operating system does not preserve every setting, purchase, or login. Think of the move as four separate jobs:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Copying local data: contacts, messages, photos, videos, calendars, and files may be transferred during setup.
- Reconnecting cloud accounts: Google, Apple, Microsoft, and other services can make their data visible after you sign in, even when that data was not copied directly.
- Reinstalling apps: an app available in both stores is not proof that its purchase, credentials, or in-app data will follow you.
- Reactivating mobile service: a SIM or eSIM change is controlled by your carrier and is separate from the data transfer.
Because these jobs have different requirements, a successful transfer may still leave you with apps to download, accounts to verify, music or books to move manually, and a messaging change to complete.

Prepare both phones before starting
Do these checks before erasing, trading in, or removing the SIM from the old phone.
- Confirm the destination’s free storage. The new phone needs enough space for the selected photos, videos, messages, and files. If it is nearly full, remove or archive large items first.
- Install pending system updates and charge both phones. Keep each device connected to power if possible. A transfer that stops halfway can leave an incomplete library and require a restart.
- Check the ports and cable. Wired migration is usually faster, but the correct lead depends on the exact phones. Google documents a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or adapter for its wired iPhone-to-Android route; Apple says a USB-C connection can link compatible Android phones and iPhones. Wireless methods are available only on supported devices and software versions.
- Record account access. Make sure you know the passwords and two-factor authentication method for Apple, Google, email, password-manager, banking, and messaging accounts. A copied app cannot authenticate you automatically if its sign-in information is not transferable.
- Back up irreplaceable material. Keep an independent copy of photos, documents, authenticator recovery codes, and conversations that your transfer path does not cover.
- Check carrier eligibility. Ask whether your exact phone models, country, plan, and software support the intended SIM or eSIM activation. Do this while the old phone can still receive verification codes.
Do not wipe the old device until you have tested calls, text messages, mobile data, photos, contacts, and the accounts you rely on every day.
Moving from Android to iPhone
Start with Apple’s guided setup
Apple’s supported route is the Move to iOS transfer shown while setting up a new iPhone. On the iPhone, proceed through setup until the transfer screen, choose From Android, install and open Move to iOS on the Android phone, and enter the temporary code displayed by the iPhone. Select the content categories, then leave both devices alone until the progress bar on the iPhone finishes. Apple’s current instructions are at Move from Android to iPhone or iPad.
A wired connection can be faster when the connectors match. If you use a cable, approve any prompts on the Android phone and do not unplug either device during the copy. Wireless transfer remains the fallback when a suitable cable or adapter is unavailable.
What Apple lists as transferable
| Category | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Contacts | Can be included in the Move to iOS selection. |
| Message history and SMS | Supported in the guided transfer; verify important threads afterward. |
| Camera photos, videos, and albums | Selected media and albums can be copied to the iPhone. |
| Files and folders | Supported files can move, but review where they are stored on iPhone. |
| Accessibility and display settings | Some settings are included; platform-specific options still need review. |
| Web bookmarks and email accounts | Account and bookmark information can be transferred, followed by sign-in checks. |
| WhatsApp messages and media | Apple lists WhatsApp content among supported categories; complete any prompts shown by both apps. |
| Voice Memos, call history, and calendars | These categories are listed as transferable, subject to the selected setup path. |
| Some free apps | Move to iOS may match free apps when the app exists in both stores and supports transfer. This does not transfer purchases or credentials automatically. |
What needs manual handling
Apple specifically says, “Music, books and PDFs need to be moved over manually.” Export or copy those items before wiping the Android phone. Streaming-service libraries normally reappear after installing the service and signing in, but downloaded offline files and locally stored documents should be treated as separate copies rather than assumed transfers.

If the iPhone is already set up
Apple’s guided transfer requires an iPhone that is still in initial setup. If you completed setup, the supported Move to iOS path requires erasing the iPhone and starting again. To avoid an erase, move content manually: sign in to the same Google services on iPhone, copy documents through their apps or a computer, export calendars or contacts when necessary, and reinstall apps individually. Weigh the time saved by a clean restart against the risk of overlooking data before choosing.
Decide where Google data should live
Google’s checklist asks Android users to decide whether photos and calendars should be imported into Apple Photos and Apple Calendar. If you prefer Google’s services, install Google Photos and Google Calendar on the iPhone and sign in; Google says the existing libraries remain available in those apps. This is synchronization through your account, not evidence that every local file was copied into Apple’s databases. See Google Account Help for the account-based approach.
Moving from iPhone to Android
Choose cable or a supported wireless transfer
Google’s Android setup flow offers a cable transfer during initial setup and, on supported devices, a wireless Switch to Android option. The exact screens and whether a post-setup transfer is offered vary by Android manufacturer. Google’s documented wireless route requires iOS 15 or later. Follow the new phone’s setup prompts, connect the phones with a compatible USB-C-to-Lightning cable or adapter when using the wired route, or select the wireless option when it is presented. Keep both phones unlocked, powered, and connected until the copy is complete. Instructions and device-specific limits are in Google’s Android transfer guide.
Categories Google says do not transfer through its described path
| Item | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Photos and videos stored only in iCloud | Request an iCloud transfer to Google Photos or back up the media to Google Photos, rather than expecting the setup cable to fetch it. |
| Paid apps and in-app purchases | Find the Android version and check the developer’s account or purchase policy; an iOS purchase does not become an Android purchase automatically. |
| Sign-in information | Log in again or use the service’s account-recovery process. |
| Safari bookmarks | Export or sync them through a supported browser account. |
| Alarms | Recreate them in the Android clock app. |
| Contacts synced to accounts | Sign in to the relevant account or export and import contacts separately. |
| Health data | Use the health service’s own export or migration tools where available. |
| Voice Memos | Export the recordings from the iPhone and copy them as audio files. |
| eSIM | Activate service through the carrier or an eligible direct-transfer flow; data setup does not activate it. |
| Files | Copy them through a computer, cloud-storage app, or another supported export route. |
“Does not transfer” in this table means the item is not moved by the described setup process. It does not mean the information is destroyed. Account sign-in, an export, an iCloud-to-Google Photos request, or a service-specific import may recover it.
Plan for setup-state limits
Some Android phones offer transfer only during their first-run setup, while others expose additional tools afterward. If the option is missing, check the manufacturer’s setup documentation before resetting the phone. Resetting can erase data already placed on the Android device, so confirm that the old iPhone still contains everything you need and that your backups are current.

Messaging: iMessage, SMS, MMS, and RCS
Turn off iMessage before removing the SIM
Before taking the SIM out of the iPhone, open Settings, tap Messages, and turn iMessage off. Google warns that otherwise SMS and MMS messages may continue routing to the old iPhone instead of the Android phone. If the old iPhone or SIM is already unavailable, use Apple’s online iMessage deregistration process, linked from Google Messages Help. Keep the old phone connected to Wi-Fi while you verify that new texts arrive on Android.

Expect some group-chat changes
Google says existing group chats with iPhone users may need to be started again after an iPhone-to-Android move. Create a new group only after iMessage is disabled and the Android number is active; otherwise participants can be split between an old iMessage thread and a new SMS, MMS, or RCS thread.
What RCS adds—and what it does not
RCS can improve conversations between supported Android phones and iPhones. Google lists typing indicators, read receipts in one-to-one conversations, group-chat features, and high-resolution photo and video sharing. Availability on iPhone depends on the carrier and country, so a compatible phone alone is not enough.
Privacy also differs by conversation. Google’s FAQ states, “RCS chats with iPhone users don’t have end-to-end encryption.” Do not apply Google Messages’ encryption statements for Google-Messages-to-Google-Messages chats to a cross-platform conversation. Check the status indicator in your messaging app and use another channel for information that requires a different security guarantee. Details are in Google’s RCS chats FAQ.
Your phone number, SIM, and eSIM are a separate migration
Copying data does not move cellular service. A physical SIM may be moved if the carrier and phone support the same size and network bands, but activation rules vary. An eSIM may require carrier approval, an activation app, or a QR code. Apple says an eSIM moved from a non-Apple device may require carrier activation or a QR code; see Set up eSIM on iPhone.

- [What You Can Get]: 2Pack 3ft New USB-C to Lightning Cables (White),lifetime replacement, and 24*7 friendly customer support service ensures that you have a pleasant shopping experience.
Apple also documents a newer direct Android-to-iPhone eSIM method for iOS 26 or later, but only for selected carriers and smartphone manufacturers with eligible devices. Treat that as a conditional option, not a universal feature. Ask the carrier to confirm support for both exact models before the old phone is disconnected. If direct transfer is unavailable, obtain the carrier’s QR code or activation procedure while you can still receive account-verification messages.
- Keep the old phone on the network and record the account PIN or security method.
- Confirm whether the destination uses a physical SIM, eSIM, or either option.
- Ask the carrier whether your country, plan, device models, and software versions qualify for direct transfer.
- Complete activation and place a test call, send a test SMS, and check mobile data.
- Only then remove the old SIM, delete its eSIM profile, or erase the old phone.
Apps, purchases, accounts, and settings after the copy
An app match is not a complete migration
Move tools can identify a free app that exists in both stores, but the app’s purchase history, subscription entitlement, local database, and login may be governed by different storefronts or account systems. Reinstall the Android or iPhone version, sign in, and inspect its settings before deleting the old copy. For paid apps and in-app purchases, consult the developer’s account policy; Google explicitly excludes those purchases from its described iPhone-to-Android transfer.
Cloud synchronization can look like transfer
Contacts, calendars, notes, photos, documents, and passwords may reappear when you sign in to the service that owns them. That is useful, but it can hide gaps: a local-only contact, an offline download, or a file stored only on the old phone will not be recreated merely because the account itself is present. Compare the old and new libraries and open representative files before wiping the source device.
Rebuild device-specific settings
Accessibility and display settings are among the categories Apple lists for Android-to-iPhone transfer, yet each platform has its own controls. Recheck notification permissions, default browser and map app, keyboard language, biometric unlock, wallet cards, alarm schedules, privacy permissions, and home-screen organization. These are quick to recreate and safer to verify than to assume.

- Not enough space: remove large destination files or select fewer media categories, then retry after confirming the available storage.
- The transfer stops or the progress bar freezes: reconnect power, keep both screens awake, use a direct cable instead of a hub, and restart the transfer from the setup screen.
- Photos are missing on Android: determine whether they lived only in iCloud. Use Google’s iCloud-transfer or Google Photos backup route instead of looking for them in the cable copy.
- Messages still arrive on the iPhone: verify that iMessage is off, deregister the number if the old phone is unavailable, and ask senders to start a new group if necessary.
- The transfer option is absent: the Android manufacturer may restrict it to initial setup, or the iPhone may not meet the wireless iOS-version requirement. Check the device-specific instructions before erasing anything.
- A work-managed phone blocks copying: organizational management can restrict transfer. Contact the administrator and obtain permission or an approved export path.
- eSIM activation fails: stop troubleshooting the data copy and contact the carrier. Confirm the IMEI, device eligibility, QR code, and whether the old line was released.
- Only some contacts or calendars appear: identify which account owns the missing records, sign in to that account on the new phone, or export the records manually.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance covers insufficient storage, interrupted transfers, iCloud-only media, organizational management, setup state, and messaging problems at Can’t transfer data to a new Android device.
A low-risk switching schedule
One or two days before
- Update and charge both phones.
- Confirm storage and cable compatibility.
- Export files, voice recordings, health records, bookmarks, and other categories your chosen path excludes.
- Verify passwords, recovery codes, and carrier account access.
- Check whether your destination phone and carrier support the intended eSIM route.
During new-phone setup
- Choose Move to iOS on iPhone or the Android transfer option shown by the new Android phone.
- Select only the categories you have space and time to verify.
- Keep both devices powered, nearby, unlocked when prompted, and connected until completion.
- Do not remove the SIM or delete the old device’s accounts while the copy is running.
Immediately afterward
- Activate the number and test calls, SMS, MMS, mobile data, and voicemail.
- Turn off iMessage before an iPhone-to-Android SIM change, or deregister the number if the old iPhone is unavailable.
- Install essential apps and sign in; check purchases and subscriptions individually.
- Open a sample of photos, videos, documents, messages, contacts, and calendar events.
- Recreate alarms, wallet cards, browser settings, accessibility preferences, and other device-specific controls.
Before erasing the old phone
Make one final comparison of the old phone’s photo library, files, contacts, messages, authenticator access, and account recovery methods. Keep the old device available until you can receive verification codes and complete a normal day of calls and messages on the new one.
Which switching direction is easier?
Neither direction is universally effortless. Android-to-iPhone has a clearly defined Apple setup route with a published list of transferable categories, but an already-configured iPhone must be erased to use it. iPhone-to-Android offers cable and supported wireless choices, yet the exact post-setup behavior and cable compatibility vary by Android manufacturer, and Google’s path excludes several iPhone-specific categories such as iCloud-only media, eSIM, Safari bookmarks, health data, and paid purchases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The least disruptive choice is therefore procedural rather than ideological: select the route that matches your setup state, account ownership, storage, and carrier support. A careful preparation window, an uninterrupted transfer, and a deliberate verification pass matter more than the platform logo on either phone.
