Most iPhone owners do not. Keep iOS current, use a strong passcode and Apple Account security, enable Stolen Device Protection, install apps from the App Store, and treat unexpected links and attachments as dangerous. Lockdown Mode is an optional, deliberately restrictive layer for the small group who may be personally targeted by highly sophisticated attacks such as mercenary spyware.
Apple describes it as “an optional, extreme protection” for people who may be targeted because of who they are or what they do. It reduces the device’s attack surface by disabling or limiting selected messaging, browsing, connectivity and management features. It is not a spyware scanner, does not prove that an iPhone is clean, and cannot guarantee that every attack will fail.

What Lockdown Mode is—and what it is not
Lockdown Mode changes how iOS behaves when Apple assumes an attacker may be willing to spend substantial resources targeting one individual. Instead of trying to preserve every normal feature, it removes or narrows functions that could provide an exploitation path. The result is a smaller attack surface, but also a phone that is less convenient.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apple says most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature. That distinction matters: ordinary phishing, account theft, malicious apps and opportunistic attacks are addressed primarily by normal security practices. Lockdown Mode is aimed at an unusually sophisticated and individualized threat model, not as a routine replacement for updates or account hygiene.

- It is a risk-reduction setting: restricting features can make some attacks harder.
- It is not detection: turning it on does not scan storage, inspect your phone for spyware or remove an existing compromise.
- It is not a guarantee: no setting promises that every attack, stolen credential or unsafe action will be blocked.
- It is reversible: you can turn it off when its restrictions are no longer justified, although doing so restores the exposure of the limited features.
Lockdown Mode compared with standard iPhone security
Standard security is the baseline every iPhone user should maintain. Lockdown Mode adds restrictions for a narrow, high-risk situation. Neither option replaces keeping the operating system and apps current.
| Security question | Standard security practices | Lockdown Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Intended threat | General phishing, account takeover, malicious apps, lost or stolen devices and everyday cybercrime | Unusually sophisticated, targeted attacks, including mercenary spyware campaigns |
| Typical actions | Install updates; use a passcode or Face ID/Touch ID; secure the Apple Account with a strong password and two-factor authentication; enable Stolen Device Protection; use trusted apps and links | Tightens behavior across messaging, web content, Apple-service requests, wired connections and device management |
| Usability | Normal iPhone operation with ordinary security controls | Some attachments, previews, websites, invitations, connections and configuration changes are unavailable or restricted |
| Best fit | Everyone, including people who have no reason to expect targeted surveillance | People with a credible reason to believe they may be specifically targeted; recipients of an Apple threat notification should follow Apple’s advice and seek expert assistance |
| What it establishes | That you have applied broad preventive controls | That additional restrictions are active; it does not establish that spyware is absent |
Is Lockdown Mode better than regular security?
It is stronger only for the particular threat it was designed to address. Lockdown Mode does not make an unpatched phone, reused password or careless sign-in safe. Standard controls provide broader everyday value, while Lockdown Mode trades convenience for additional resistance to carefully crafted content and connections. Think of it as an extra layer, not a replacement or a ranking in which every user should choose the most restrictive option.
Do you need an app, subscription or accessory?
No purchase is required to enable this protection. Lockdown Mode is built into supported versions of iOS. A case, generic antivirus app or cable cannot activate it, and Apple’s setting does not become a spyware detector when paired with another consumer product. Concentrate on software updates, account protection and an appropriate threat assessment.
Build the standard security baseline first
Lockdown Mode is not a substitute for the controls that protect nearly every iPhone user. Apply these measures whether or not you later enable the restrictive mode.
Install current software on every device
Use Software Update to install the latest iOS release available for your iPhone. Update supported iPads, Macs and Apple Watches as well. Security fixes only protect a device after the relevant update has been installed, and Lockdown Mode’s protections have expanded across successive operating-system releases since its introduction in iOS 16.
Do not postpone an update merely because you plan to use Lockdown Mode later. Apple designs its operating-system software with security at its core, but that design depends on deploying the releases that contain current fixes. Check the version on every device that shares your account, not just the phone you carry most often.
Protect the device with a strong passcode and biometrics
Use a passcode that is difficult to guess and keep Face ID or Touch ID enabled where supported. Do not share the passcode casually. A biometric lock improves resistance to someone who briefly handles the phone, while the passcode remains the underlying credential for many security-sensitive actions.
Harden the Apple Account
Use a unique, strong Apple Account password and turn on two-factor authentication. Review the trusted phone numbers and devices associated with the account. If you suspect that a password or verification code has been disclosed, change the password from a trusted device and review account activity rather than merely deleting a suspicious message.
Account security is especially important because spyware protection on one device cannot compensate for an attacker who has taken over the account used to synchronize data or approve new sign-ins. Treat an unexpected verification prompt as a warning, and never read a code to someone who contacted you unsolicited.
Turn on Stolen Device Protection
Stolen Device Protection adds safeguards when an iPhone is away from familiar locations. Find it in the iPhone’s Face ID & Passcode settings and follow the prompts to enable it. This setting addresses a different problem from Lockdown Mode: it helps limit what a thief can do with a passcode, whereas Lockdown Mode reduces exposure to sophisticated remote attacks.

Control apps, links and attachments
- Install iPhone apps from the App Store and keep them updated.
- Use unique passwords or passkeys for important services instead of reusing one password.
- Do not open unexpected links, attachments or login pages, even when a message appears to come from a familiar organization.
- When a request is unusual, contact the person or organization through a separately verified channel.
These habits remain necessary with Lockdown Mode enabled. The mode narrows certain technical attack paths; it does not stop you from voluntarily giving an attacker a password or approving a fraudulent sign-in.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat Lockdown Mode restricts
The exact behavior depends on the iOS version and the feature involved. Apple’s current guide should be treated as the authority for version-specific details. The restrictions below describe the categories that matter when deciding whether the usability cost is acceptable.
Messages and invitations
Some message attachments are blocked or handled more cautiously, and link previews may not appear. Invitations from people you have not previously contacted can be limited. These changes reduce the chance that specially crafted content is processed automatically, but they can interrupt legitimate first-time conversations, collaboration requests or family messages.
That means a missing preview or attachment is not automatically evidence that a sender is malicious. Confirm the sender independently before making an exception, and remember that a familiar name in Messages is not proof that the account has not been taken over.
Web browsing
Complex web technologies and other high-risk browser capabilities may be disabled or constrained. A site that works normally without Lockdown Mode may display a simplified page, fail to load a feature or require a different workflow. This is an intentional tradeoff: rich content provides convenience but also increases the amount of code exposed to untrusted input.

Some Apple-service requests are restricted. Wired connections while the iPhone is locked are limited, reducing what can be negotiated through a physical connection before the device is unlocked. This can affect accessories, computer connections and troubleshooting routines.
Configuration and device management
While Lockdown Mode is on, a new configuration profile cannot be installed and the iPhone cannot enroll in mobile-device management (MDM). Existing management profiles remain in place. Organizations should therefore plan enrollment and configuration before enabling the mode; it is not a way to remove an existing management profile.
Emergency calling
Apple says SOS emergency calls are not affected. You can still use the iPhone’s emergency-calling function when the other restrictions are active.
How the restrictions affect everyday use
Before switching on the mode, list the activities that must work every day: work portals, web-based banking, family group chats, external keyboards, car connections and computer backups. Test the services after enabling it rather than assuming every failure is a compromise. A page that loses a rich sign-in widget, a first-contact invitation that never arrives or a locked phone that refuses a wired connection may reflect the deliberate policy.
For a person who rarely receives unsolicited messages and does not need device management, the practical cost may be small. For a journalist, executive or managed-workplace user who receives many new contacts, uses complex web applications or frequently connects accessories while locked, the restrictions can be substantial. That usability cost is why Apple positions the feature for a very small, high-risk group.

How to turn on Lockdown Mode on an iPhone
Update the phone before starting. If you use other Apple devices, plan to enable the setting on each supported device as well.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Lockdown Mode.
- Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode and read the explanation of the restrictions.
- Confirm the choice. When prompted, choose Turn On & Restart.
- Enter the iPhone passcode after the restart completes.
Save any work and make sure you know the passcode before restarting. If the option is missing, check that the device is updated to a supported release; Apple introduced Lockdown Mode in iOS 16 and added protections in later operating-system versions. The labels and exact behavior can change, so use the current Apple guide rather than an older screenshot.
Cover the rest of your Apple device set
Protection is incomplete if the same account and data are exposed through another device. Apple advises enabling Lockdown Mode on each supported iPhone, iPad and Mac as appropriate. Enabling it on an iPhone also enables it automatically on a paired Apple Watch.
Recommended Free Tools
- Update every supported device first.
- Enable the mode separately on iPads and Macs instead of assuming the iPhone setting covers them.
- Check that a paired Apple Watch has adopted the setting after the iPhone restarts.
- Keep account security and passcode protections consistent across the device set.
If one device cannot run a current operating system or does not support Lockdown Mode, treat that device as an additional exposure and avoid using it for the most sensitive activity when a targeted attack is a realistic concern. Apple’s all-device approach matters because messages, credentials and cloud data can move between devices even when the iPhone itself is restricted.
Should you enable it? A practical decision test
Use standard security when your risk is ordinary
For most people, current software, a secured Apple Account, Stolen Device Protection, careful app installation and cautious handling of links provide the appropriate balance. Turning on Lockdown Mode merely because spyware exists can create daily friction without evidence that its exceptional threat model applies to you.
Consider Lockdown Mode when targeting is credible
The setting is more reasonable if your work, public profile, activism, legal disputes, political activity or access to sensitive information gives a capable adversary a reason to target you individually. The decision should be based on a credible risk assessment, not on a generic fear of phone malware.
If you work for an organization, involve its security team before enabling the mode. Confirm whether required MDM enrollment, configuration profiles or support workflows must be completed first. Lockdown Mode does not erase existing management and can prevent new enrollment.

Treat an Apple threat notification as a special case
Apple describes these notifications as high-confidence alerts that it believes an individual was targeted. They may appear on the iPhone Lock Screen and in Settings, arrive by email or be shown after signing in to the Apple Account page. Apple does not disclose the detection details, so the alert is a warning to seek help, not a technical report that identifies the spyware.
Verify the alert by typing account.apple.com into the browser yourself and signing in; do not rely on a link in an email. A genuine notification will not ask you to provide an Apple Account password or verification code, click a link, install an app or profile, or open a file. Apple recommends expert assistance, including the Access Now Digital Security Helpline, for people who receive an alert.
Restrictions, exceptions and troubleshooting
A trusted site or app no longer works
First check whether the failure is caused by a Lockdown Mode restriction rather than an outage. If the service is essential, Apple allows exclusions for a site, app or contact in supported cases. Excluding an item reduces protection for that item, so use the narrowest exception possible and only for something you trust. Remove the exception when the task is finished.

A new work profile or MDM enrollment is blocked
Lockdown Mode prevents newly installing configuration profiles and prevents enrollment in MDM. Complete required enrollment before enabling the mode, or coordinate with the organization’s administrator. Existing management profiles are not removed simply because the mode is active.
Messages or invitations are missing features
Attachment handling, previews and invitations from people you have not contacted can be limited by design. Confirm the sender through another channel and decide whether the specific conversation justifies a temporary, narrowly scoped exception. Do not disable the entire mode solely to restore a preview.
A wired accessory or computer cannot connect while the phone is locked
Unlock the iPhone before attempting the connection. Lockdown Mode restricts wired connections while locked; this is an intended security boundary rather than evidence that the cable or accessory is defective.
You suspect an existing infection
Turning on Lockdown Mode is still a sensible risk-reduction step, but it does not perform a forensic scan or clean the device. Stop interacting with suspicious messages, preserve relevant evidence, secure the Apple Account from a trusted device and seek qualified incident-response help, especially if you received an Apple threat notification. Avoid installing an unverified “spyware cleaner” that requests broad access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Lockdown Mode can and cannot prove
- It can show: that the selected Apple device is operating with Apple’s restrictive protections enabled.
- It can reduce: exposure from selected message content, complex web technologies, unsolicited invitations, some Apple-service requests, locked wired connections and new management enrollment.
- It cannot show: that no spyware was previously installed, that an account was never compromised or that every future exploit is blocked.
- It cannot replace: software updates, account protection, safe handling of links and attachments, or professional help after a credible targeted-attack warning.
Apple publishes no independently measured percentage showing how often Lockdown Mode prevents spyware. The documented benefit is a reduced attack surface, not a guaranteed success rate. Be skeptical of claims that attach a precise success percentage to the setting without identifying a measured study.
Frequently asked questions
Can Lockdown Mode remove spyware already on my iPhone?
No. It changes which features and inputs are available going forward; it does not scan for, identify or remove an existing compromise. Seek qualified incident-response help if you have specific evidence of targeting.
Does Lockdown Mode stop every spyware attack?
No. It reduces exposure to selected attack paths, but no setting guarantees that every exploit, stolen credential or unsafe action will be blocked.
Will Lockdown Mode affect emergency calls?
Apple says SOS emergency calls are not affected. Other communications and connections can still be limited.
Does enabling it on my iPhone protect my Mac and iPad?
No. Enable Lockdown Mode separately on each supported iPhone, iPad and Mac. A paired Apple Watch turns it on automatically when it is enabled on the iPhone.

Why did a website or message feature stop working?
Complex web technologies, some attachments, link previews and invitations from people you have not contacted can be restricted intentionally. Check Apple’s current feature list and use the smallest trusted exception only when necessary.
How do I know an Apple threat notification is genuine?
Sign in directly at account.apple.com. Apple says a legitimate notification will not ask for a password or verification code, request that you click a link, install an app or profile, or open a file. Get expert assistance rather than responding through an email link.
Should everyone turn on Lockdown Mode for extra safety?
No. Apple designed it for the very few people who may be individually targeted by exceptionally sophisticated attacks. Everyone should use the standard baseline; enable the restrictive mode when your circumstances or a verified notification justify its usability cost.
Bottom line for iPhone owners
Use standard security settings as your permanent baseline. Enable Lockdown Mode when you have a credible reason to believe you are being individually targeted by sophisticated digital threats, or after receiving and verifying an Apple threat notification. Before enabling it, update every device and accept that some messaging, browsing, connection and management features will no longer work normally. Keep the mode enabled across the relevant Apple device set, use exceptions sparingly, and remember that it lowers risk without detecting or removing spyware.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Lockdown Mode to protect my iPhone from spyware?
Most users do not. Keep software current, secure your Apple Account, enable Stolen Device Protection, use strong authentication and avoid unsafe links and attachments. Lockdown Mode is for people with a credible risk of highly targeted attacks.
Is Lockdown Mode better than standard iPhone security settings?
It adds stronger restrictions for a narrow advanced threat model, but it also reduces everyday functionality. Standard security is the right baseline for everyone; Lockdown Mode is an additional layer when targeted risk is credible.
Does Lockdown Mode detect or remove spyware?
No. It reduces exposure to selected attack paths but does not scan, diagnose or clean an iPhone.

The Bottom Line
For most people, updated software and strong account, passcode and app-safety practices are enough. Lockdown Mode is an optional, restrictive defense for credible, highly targeted spyware risk—not a scanner or a guarantee.
