There is no trustworthy list of “best iPhone spy apps.” The phrase usually refers to stalkerware: software installed without the phone owner’s knowledge. Covert monitoring can create serious safety risks, while transparent tools such as Apple’s Screen Time are designed for disclosed family management. If you think someone is monitoring your iPhone, treat warning signs as prompts for a safety review—not proof—and avoid changes that could alert an abusive person.
What “iPhone spy app” can mean
“Spy app” is marketing language, not a precise technical category. In a non-consensual situation, the more accurate terms are stalkerware or covert monitoring. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines stalkerware as software installed on a phone or other device without its owner’s knowledge. It may be used to track location, view communications or media, and monitor online activity, and some developers design it to avoid detection.
Those are general characteristics, not a promise that any particular app can read every message, activate every microphone, or silently install itself on an ordinary, up-to-date iPhone. What is possible depends on iOS protections, the app’s permissions, account security, device-management settings, and whether someone had physical access to the phone.
Covert surveillance versus legitimate device management

Apple’s 2019 explanation of consumer parental-control apps warned that apps using mobile-device management (MDM) could gain control over sensitive information. Apple also distinguishes enterprise MDM, which has legitimate organizational uses. That policy statement does not establish that every current parental-control app is unsafe; it explains why undisclosed management deserves scrutiny.

Signs that deserve a safety review
The FTC lists several possible warning signs:
- Unusually high mobile-data use
- Faster-than-usual battery drain, overheating, unexpected restarts, or other unexplained behavior
- An abusive person knowing precise private details they should not know
- Someone having had unsupervised physical access to the iPhone
Each sign has many non-spyware explanations, including a failing battery, a software bug, cloud-account access, or ordinary location sharing. A phone with no obvious symptoms is not proven safe either; covert software may be difficult to detect. Use the signs to decide whether to review settings and seek help, not as a diagnostic test.
Check an iPhone without escalating risk
If a partner, household member, or other person may be monitoring you, changing settings, deleting software, or confronting them can reveal that you are investigating and may increase danger. Where possible, use a different device to contact a domestic-violence advocate, trusted person, or law enforcement. Consider preserving relevant evidence before altering the phone, and follow a safety plan made with an advocate.

1. Use Safety Check
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Choose Safety Check.
- Review Manage Sharing & Access to see people, apps, and devices connected to information, or use Emergency Reset if an immediate, broad stop is appropriate.
Apple describes Safety Check as a way to disconnect your iPhone from people, apps, and devices you no longer want connected. It helps review sharing and access; Apple does not present it as a guarantee that every spyware installation, compromised account, or management enrollment will be found.
2. Review App Privacy Report
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then App Privacy Report.
- Turn it on if needed and return later to review sensor access and the domains apps contacted.
The report can show certain access to location, photos, camera, microphone, contacts, and network domains. It is an activity record, not a certification that the iPhone is clean; it cannot reveal every form of account compromise or device-management access.

3. Check accounts, sharing, and management
- In Settings, review your Apple Account, the list of devices, and people or apps receiving location or other shared data.
- Look for an unfamiliar profile under Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Do not remove a work or school profile until you understand its purpose and the safety consequences.
- Review installed apps and their permissions, but do not assume an unfamiliar app is proof of stalkerware or delete it immediately if doing so could alert someone.
What to do if monitoring seems likely
- Prioritize immediate safety. Move to a safer place or contact emergency services if you face immediate danger.
- Use another device when possible. Contact an advocate or trusted person from a phone or computer the suspected monitor cannot access.
- Document carefully. Preserve screenshots, dates, messages, and device details if doing so is safe. An advocate can help decide what evidence matters.
- Plan changes. Password resets, sign-outs, a factory reset, or replacing the phone may be appropriate, but make them part of a safety plan. A sudden change can trigger retaliation or destroy evidence.
- Secure accounts from a known-safe device. An advocate or qualified technician can help review Apple Account security, two-factor authentication, and recovery information without relying on the potentially monitored iPhone.
Do not rely on a generic “spyware cleaner” claim. The available official guidance does not identify a universal consumer app that detects and removes every form of iPhone surveillance.
How parents can monitor a child’s iPhone transparently
For family supervision, start with Apple’s built-in controls rather than secret surveillance. Apple Support describes Screen Time parental controls for managing downloads, communication, content, and restrictions.

- On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time.
- Tap the child’s name if Family Sharing is configured, or set up Screen Time on the child’s device.
- Use Downtime, App Limits, Communication Limits, and Content & Privacy Restrictions according to the child’s age and your household rules.
- Explain what is limited or visible, who controls the settings, and how the child can ask for a review.
Transparent controls preserve a clear boundary: parents manage a child’s device openly, while stalkerware hides surveillance from the person being monitored. Secretly installing software on another person’s phone is not a safe default for parenting or relationships.

There is no single worldwide answer to whether a “spy app” is legal. Consent, ownership, relationship, employment status, and local law all matter. Apple’s developer agreement prohibits undisclosed or unauthorized MDM monitoring under its terms, but that does not replace jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

A dated Kaspersky report on 2023 stalkerware described iPhone workarounds involving jailbreaking and direct device access. It is secondary context, not a complete current threat assessment. Do not generalize it into a claim that every iPhone can be remotely taken over or that every monitoring app has the same capabilities.
Bottom line for choosing an approach
- Need family limits? Use disclosed Screen Time controls and discuss the rules.
- See unusual activity? Review Safety Check, App Privacy Report, account sharing, and device-management profiles.
- Suspect an abusive monitor? Plan with an advocate before deleting apps, resetting the phone, changing settings, or confronting anyone.
- Want a covert spy app? Do not install or recommend one; hidden surveillance creates privacy, safety, and potentially legal risks.

Can someone spy on an iPhone without me knowing?
Covert monitoring is possible in some circumstances, especially when someone has physical access, account access, or device-management control, but no general source establishes that a particular app can access every iPhone feature silently. Will Safety Check find spyware?

Should I factory-reset a phone I think is monitored?
Not automatically. A reset can alert an abuser or erase evidence. Contact an advocate from another device and make the change part of a safety plan.
