Choose iPhone Silence Unknown Callers when your priority is zero interruptions from unsaved numbers and you are happy to check voicemail. Choose Ask Reason for Calling or Google Call Screen when you want a caller to identify themselves and explain the purpose before you decide whether to answer. Apple’s controls are available through iPhone software, while Google Call Screen depends on a supported phone, country, SIM and operating conditions. Neither system catches every unwanted call, so your choice should reflect how you handle legitimate calls from numbers that are not in your contacts.
At a glance: silence, screening and ordinary ringing
| Option | What happens to an unsaved number | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone: Never | The call rings normally. | People who must receive every new caller immediately. | Every robocall and sales call can interrupt you. |
| iPhone: Ask Reason for Calling | The caller is asked why they are calling; the iPhone shares the response before it rings. | People who want context before deciding to answer. | The interaction can still result in a ring and requires a compatible iOS version. |
| iPhone: Silence | The call is silenced, sent to voicemail and retained in call history. | People who prefer an interruption-free phone. | A legitimate first-time caller may reach voicemail instead of you. |
| Google Call Screen: automatic | Call Assist answers, asks who is calling and why, and lets the phone ring with the caller’s response when the call is not identified as spam. | Supported Pixel owners who want routine screening without tapping a button. | Availability is country- and device-specific, and operating conditions can prevent it from working. |
| Google Call Screen: manual | You tap Screen call, watch a live transcript, then answer, use a suggested reply or hang up. | People who want to decide case by case. | You must notice the incoming call and start screening yourself. |
Apple describes its controls in Manage unknown callers on iPhone and Screen and block calls on iPhone. Google’s behavior and regional requirements are documented in Screen your calls before you answer them.

How iPhone handles unknown callers
Never: conventional call behavior
Never leaves calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts behaving normally. The phone rings, you see the incoming-call screen and you make the decision without an automated question being asked first. This is the safest setting for people who receive time-sensitive calls from new numbers, such as medical offices, schools, delivery drivers or prospective clients.
Ask Reason for Calling: information before the ring
Ask Reason for Calling inserts a screening step. The caller is prompted to state who they are and why they are calling. The iPhone then shares that response before the phone rings, giving you context without requiring you to answer an unknown number blindly. It is a middle ground: less disruptive than unrestricted ringing, but more accessible to genuine callers than sending every unsaved number directly to voicemail.

Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Silence: voicemail without an interruption
Silence does not block the number. Instead, the incoming call is muted, sent to voicemail and kept in your call history so you can review it later. A caller can still leave a message, and you can return the call from the history list. This distinction matters when you need fewer interruptions but do not want to discard unknown callers completely.
Related iPhone filters
Apple also provides separate controls for unknown-caller filtering and for calls that the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud. Those tools are not the same as choosing Silence, and they may act on different categories of calls. If an important number is not saved, adding it to Contacts is the most direct way to prevent it from being treated as an unknown caller; Apple recommends keeping important numbers in your contacts list.
How Google Call Screen works on Android
Automatic screening
In automatic mode, Call Assist answers an incoming call on your behalf and asks the caller to identify themselves and explain the reason for calling. If the call is not identified as spam, the phone rings and displays the caller’s response. You can then answer with useful context rather than opening with a silent line or a generic greeting.

Manual screening
With manual screening, tap Screen call on the incoming-call interface. The Phone app presents a real-time transcript of the exchange. From that screen you can answer, choose a suggested response or end the call. Manual mode is useful when you are expecting a call but do not recognize the number, because you retain control over when the automated conversation starts.
What gets stored
Google says screened-call transcripts are saved on the phone. Pixel users can also turn on audio saving. The transcript is therefore a local record you should review and delete according to your own retention preferences, especially when a call contains personal or business information.

Availability: the Android qualification that matters most
Call Screen is not a universal Android feature. Google documents automatic Call Screen on Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Google lists manual Call Screen for Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Manual screening is also available on selected Android devices in the United States and Canada. A SIM from a supported country is required for manual screening.
Google’s documentation includes newer-device limitations for some availability. The practical test is the Phone app itself: if the Call Screen menu is absent, Google says the device does not support the feature. Do not infer support merely because a phone runs Android or because another model in the same product family has the option.

On Pixel 7 and later, Google describes controls that can automatically screen suspected spam, possibly faked numbers and first-time callers. Older devices can show different names or fewer categories. Treat the labels displayed in your Phone app as authoritative for your model and software version.
Exact setup steps
Set an iPhone’s unknown-caller behavior
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Phone.
- Choose the unknown-caller behavior.
- Select Never, Ask Reason for Calling or Silence, depending on the choices shown on your iPhone.
- Add important organizations and people to Contacts so their numbers are recognized rather than treated as unknown.
On software versions earlier than iOS 17, Apple requires Live Voicemail to be enabled for call screening. Apple also states that screening is unavailable while roaming and switches off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. Standard calling and data rates may apply.
Turn on Google Call Screen
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen; the label varies by device.
- Select Call Screen.
- Choose the automatic-screening and protection options available for your phone, country and software.
If you cannot find the menu, the device is not currently exposing Call Screen support according to Google’s guidance. Check the Phone app’s country, SIM and software requirements before troubleshooting anything else.

Which setting gives you the right level of interruption control?
Choose Silence when interruption is the problem
Silence is the most hands-off choice. It prevents the ringtone from competing with meetings, sleep or focused work and leaves a voicemail trail for anything important. It is appropriate when your contacts list is maintained and you routinely review voicemail and recent calls. It is less suitable if you are waiting for a first call from a clinic, employer, school or service provider and cannot risk overlooking the notification.

Choose Ask Reason for Calling when context is worth a possible ring
Ask Reason for Calling preserves a path for a genuine caller to explain themselves before you answer. It is useful when you want fewer blind interruptions but still expect unsaved numbers to get through in real time. The setting does not guarantee that you will never hear an unwanted call; the caller’s response can still lead to a ring.
Choose Google automatic screening when your Pixel and location qualify
Automatic Call Screen suits someone who wants the phone to perform the first conversation. It can separate a caller who gives a plausible reason from a call that looks like spam before you pick up. The feature is only a sensible recommendation after confirming that your Pixel model, country, SIM and current Phone app expose automatic screening.
Choose manual screening when you want case-by-case control
Manual Call Screen is a good compromise for supported users who sometimes need unknown callers and sometimes do not. You decide which calls deserve a transcript, then answer or dismiss them after seeing the exchange. Because it requires a tap, it is not equivalent to an always-on automatic filter.
Comparison by the decisions that affect real calls
| Decision | iPhone Silence | iPhone Ask Reason | Google Call Screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does the phone ring immediately? | No; the call is silenced and routed to voicemail. | Not until the caller has been asked for a reason and the response is shared. | Automatic screening can ring after the caller responds; manual screening lets you decide after viewing the exchange. |
| Can you hear why the person is calling first? | No automated explanation; check voicemail or call history. | Yes, Apple shares the caller’s response before the ring. | Yes; manual mode shows a live transcript, and automatic mode displays the response when the call is allowed through. |
| Where is it supported? | On iPhones whose software provides the setting. | On iPhones whose software provides the setting. | Automatic: documented Pixel support in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and US. Manual: documented Pixel support in those countries plus France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan and Spain; selected Android devices in the US and Canada are also listed. |
| What happens to a missed legitimate call? | It can leave voicemail and remains in call history. | The caller can explain themselves before you decide whether to answer. | The call follows the screening conversation, subject to support and operating limitations. |
| Does call forwarding change the result? | Apple’s cited guidance does not describe a forwarding-specific behavior for Silence. | Apple’s cited guidance does not describe a forwarding-specific behavior. | Google advises against automatic screening with call forwarding because screened calls will not be forwarded. |
Limitations and failure modes to plan for
Roaming and travel
iPhone screening is unavailable while roaming. Google says automatic screening may also fail while roaming. If you travel, verify the behavior before depending on screening for an important call; a setting that worked at home may not behave the same way abroad.

Emergency calls
Apple temporarily turns screening off for 24 hours after you call emergency services. This is a deliberate safety-related interruption to the normal setting, so do not assume your previous unknown-caller choice remains active during that window.
Bluetooth, headphones and media playback
Google lists some Bluetooth or headphone use as a condition in which automatic screening may not work, and says screening can interrupt media playback. If an incoming call matters, disconnecting a problematic audio route or pausing playback may make the call easier to handle, but support still depends on the device and region.
Call forwarding
Google says automatically screened calls are not forwarded when call forwarding is enabled. People who rely on a second number, a desk line or a service that forwards calls should test the exact workflow before enabling automatic screening.
Recording and transcription apps
Google Call Screen does not work with third-party call-recording and screen-recording apps. Disable or remove those apps from the call path if screening is more important than recording, and remember that a transcript may not perfectly capture names, accents or technical terms.

Google states that not all spam and robocalls can be detected and that transcripts may misunderstand what a caller says. Apple’s Silence setting is not a spam detector at all: it applies the chosen unknown-caller behavior. Neither approach guarantees that every unwanted call is stopped or that every legitimate call reaches you immediately.

Privacy and local records
Google says Call Screen operates on the device and does not use Wi-Fi or mobile data for the screening exchange. It also says screening information is not saved to your Google Account or activity pages. If you choose to share Call Screen data, Google may access the screening-phase recording and transcript, diagnostics, some business-call details, disclosures, the spam verdict and rounded event timestamps. That optional sharing is separate from the local transcript that is saved on the phone.
For a privacy-first setup, leave optional data sharing off, review locally stored transcripts and audio, and remove records you no longer need. On iPhone, the key privacy choice is behavioral rather than a transcript setting: Silence keeps the conversation out of your immediate attention while voicemail and call history provide a later review path.
A practical decision checklist
- You need every first-time caller: use iPhone Never, or leave Call Screen off unless you can verify calls are handled correctly.
- You want an explanation before answering: use iPhone Ask Reason for Calling or Google Call Screen where supported.
- You want no ringtone from unsaved numbers: use iPhone Silence and review voicemail and call history.
- You own a non-Pixel Android phone: open the Phone app and confirm the Call Screen menu exists; do not assume Android version alone is enough.
- You use call forwarding: avoid Google automatic screening unless your forwarding requirement has been tested and is compatible.
- You travel or roam often: check the roaming limitations before relying on either platform’s screening behavior.
- You use recording software: expect Google Call Screen to be incompatible with third-party call-recording and screen-recording apps.
- You are waiting for an important unsaved number: add the organization or person to Contacts when possible, or choose a screening mode that lets the caller provide context rather than silently routing the call away.
Bottom line for common users
For an iPhone owner whose main goal is quiet, predictable call handling, Silence is the simplest choice: unknown calls go to voicemail and remain reviewable. For an iPhone owner who wants to hear a caller’s purpose before deciding, Ask Reason for Calling offers more information with less immediate exposure than ordinary ringing.
