Before you install or restore a crypto wallet on an iPhone, secure two separate layers: the phone and Apple Account that could expose the wallet, and the wallet’s own private keys or recovery method. iOS settings can reduce the chance that someone uses a stolen, unlocked phone or hijacks your account. They cannot recover an exposed recovery phrase, reverse a confirmed blockchain transfer, or make an imitation wallet legitimate.
Use the checklist below before funding a wallet. Menu names can vary by iPhone model and iOS release, so confirm the labels shown on your device.

The security model: iPhone protection is not wallet custody
A mobile wallet may keep signing keys in encrypted storage on the phone, derive them from a recovery phrase, or use a different backup design such as passkeys or an account-based service. Your iPhone passcode, Face ID, Apple Account security and anti-phishing habits protect access to the device and its apps. The wallet’s backup instructions determine whether losing the phone is merely an inconvenience or a permanent loss of access.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think of the setup as two locks:
- Device and account lock: iOS updates, a strong passcode, biometrics, Stolen Device Protection, Find My, Apple Account two-factor authentication and cautious app installation.
- Wallet-key lock: the wallet’s recovery phrase or other recovery credential, signing approvals and any hardware device used to hold keys.
A secure iPhone does not protect a recovery phrase that has already been photographed, typed into a website or sent to a supposed support agent. Conversely, a carefully stored phrase does not stop someone who can open an unlocked phone and approve a transaction.

Quick checklist before you add funds
| Control | Where to check | What it addresses | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current iOS | Settings > General > Software Update | Security fixes and current protections | Does not secure an exposed wallet phrase |
| Strong passcode and biometrics | Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode | Unauthorized access to the phone | Anyone who learns the passcode may bypass some protections |
| Stolen Device Protection | Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection | High-risk changes after theft | Requires iOS 17.3 or later and several prerequisites |
| Find My and location | Settings > [your name] > Find My; Location Services in Privacy & Security | Locating, locking or erasing a lost iPhone; prerequisite for Stolen Device Protection | Cannot retrieve a self-custody phrase |
| Apple Account two-factor authentication | Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security | Apple Account and related services | Not the same as a wallet recovery phrase |
| Wallet and app locks | Wallet app settings and iOS app-lock option where available | Extra biometric gate for opening the app | Availability and behavior differ by wallet and iOS version |
Install every available iOS security update
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update from Apple. Apple advises using current software because updates include security fixes. Do not rely on a remembered version number as proof that the phone is current; the Software Update screen is the authoritative check for that device.
Enable automatic updates if that fits your normal maintenance habits, but still review the screen periodically. If an update requires substantial free storage or a restart, complete those requirements before creating or funding the wallet. A phone left several releases behind may miss fixes for vulnerabilities that affect apps, web content or account authentication.
Use a strong passcode and turn on Face ID or Touch ID
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) and choose a passcode that is long, unique and not shared with another service. A device passcode enables iPhone Data Protection, and longer passcodes are harder to guess than short or reused ones. Do not use a wallet PIN, Apple Account password or a number that someone close to you already knows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEnable Face ID or Touch ID and require it for the wallet app when the app supports that option. Biometrics reduce the number of times you type the passcode in public. They do not replace the passcode: iOS will periodically require it, including after a restart or under certain security conditions.
Keep the passcode private. Someone who watches you enter it may be able to use the phone even if the wallet normally opens with biometrics. Avoid lending an unlocked phone while a wallet is open, and lock the screen before handing the device to anyone.
Turn on Stolen Device Protection before the phone disappears
Stolen Device Protection is one of the most relevant iPhone settings for a phone that holds a wallet. It must be enabled before loss or theft. Apple describes it as requiring biometric authentication, without passcode fallback, for selected sensitive actions when the iPhone is away from familiar locations. For some changes, iOS imposes a one-hour security delay and then requires another biometric check.
Requirements and setup
Apple says the feature is available with iOS 17.3 or later. It requires a device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Find My and location settings. Set it up at:

Choose whether protection applies at familiar places
By default, some extra requirements are triggered when the iPhone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. Apple provides an Always option so the additional protections apply everywhere. Select it if you prefer consistent biometric checks and security delays, accepting that legitimate account or device changes may take longer even when you are in a familiar place.
What it does and does not protect
The feature is designed to make a stolen phone and a known passcode less useful for changing critical settings. It does not encrypt a recovery phrase that you saved in Notes, Photos, cloud storage or a messaging app. It also cannot cancel a transaction that a thief has already approved, and it does not validate the destination address of a transaction.
Confirm Find My and location settings
Find My supports locating an iPhone, marking it as lost and, when necessary, remotely erasing it. It is also a prerequisite for Stolen Device Protection. Check Settings > [your name] > Find My and confirm that Find My iPhone is enabled. Keep the relevant location settings enabled; Stolen Device Protection relies on location to distinguish familiar from unfamiliar places.
Apple says Find My cannot be turned off while Stolen Device Protection is enabled. That dependency is intentional: a thief should not be able to remove the locating and lost-device layer simply by knowing the passcode. Test that you understand how to access Find My from another trusted device or Apple account session before you need it.
Harden the Apple Account without confusing it with the wallet
In Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security, confirm that two-factor authentication is enabled and that the password is strong and unique. Review trusted phone numbers and devices, removing anything you no longer control. Apple recommends unique passwords or passkeys and caution around unexpected sign-in requests.
This protects the Apple Account and services connected to it. It is not a replacement for the wallet’s recovery phrase. Apple cannot normally retrieve a self-custody phrase merely because the phone or Apple Account is yours, and an Apple Account login does not prove ownership of a blockchain address.
Lock the wallet app and restrict access to sensitive apps
Use the wallet’s own biometric-lock setting when it offers one. iOS also supports locking certain apps with Face ID or Touch ID; the exact option depends on the iOS version and app. Apple explains that a locked app works with Stolen Device Protection to add biometric protection when the phone is away from familiar locations.

Check whether the lock covers opening the app, viewing balances, exporting keys and approving transactions. A lock that protects only the launch screen may not protect a recovery export or a signing prompt. Keep notification previews from displaying wallet balances or transaction details on the lock screen if those details could help an attacker.

Install the genuine app and treat every support message as untrusted
Verify the download
Install wallet software from the App Store or the wallet maker’s verified distribution channel. Before opening it, check the publisher name, spelling, icon, supported networks and links to the maker’s official documentation. A familiar-looking icon or a high download count is not proof of authenticity. Avoid sideloaded profiles or installation links sent in direct messages.
Reject unsolicited links and attachments
Do not follow a wallet-support link in an unexpected email, text message, social-media reply or pop-up. Open the app or type the known site address yourself, then navigate to support. Phishing pages commonly ask for a recovery phrase, a private key, a one-time code or a “verification” payment. A request for a recovery phrase is a major red flag; legitimate support should not need the phrase to inspect an account.
Check transaction details before signing
Wallet security settings cannot tell whether a transaction is wise. Read the network, destination address, amount, fee and any token-approval permission on the wallet’s confirmation screen. Compare an address using a trusted, independent channel rather than relying on a link or copied text from an unsolicited message. If a transaction is irreversible on that network, pause when any detail is unexpected.
Use Safety Check when people, devices or accounts are shared
For iOS 16 or later, Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check can help review sharing, connected devices and app access. It is particularly useful if another person has had access to the phone, if accounts are shared, or if you are unsure which apps can see location or other data.
Safety Check is not a wallet-key backup tool. Use it to remove access you no longer intend to grant, then review the wallet’s own sessions and connected sites separately.
When Lockdown Mode is appropriate
Lockdown Mode is a specialized defense for people who believe they may be targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, such as mercenary spyware. Apple states: “Most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature.” The mode limits features and can make normal messaging, browsing and attachment handling less convenient.
Do not turn it on as a routine crypto setting without understanding those trade-offs. If you have a credible, specific threat model, read Apple’s feature description, apply it to the affected devices and expect to test which apps and services still work. For ordinary wallet use, current iOS, Stolen Device Protection, app authenticity and careful credential handling are the more proportionate controls.

Software-wallet instructions are product-specific
Follow the exact backup flow shown by the wallet. Some software wallets use a 12-word recovery phrase; others use a different phrase length, encrypted cloud backup, a manual backup or a passkey-based recovery design. Do not substitute instructions from another wallet.

For example, Coinbase’s cited Wallet instructions describe a 12-word recovery phrase, warn users not to share it and advise against screenshots or recordings. Those are Coinbase-specific operational instructions. The same material describes encrypted cloud backup and manual backup choices; understand which one you selected and what account or device is needed to restore it.
Never put a self-custody phrase on an internet-connected device
Do not type a recovery phrase into a website, search field, email, notes app, cloud document, message or purported support chat. Avoid screenshots, screen recordings, clipboard history and photographs. Malware, account compromise or accidental sharing can expose a phrase long after you think you deleted it.
Ledger’s hardware-wallet guidance is stricter for its device model: keep the recovery phrase off internet-connected devices and never enter it into a phone or computer. Anyone who has the phrase can restore access to the wallet. This is vendor guidance for that hardware-wallet design, not a claim that every wallet uses an identical recovery process.

Store paper or metal backups where theft and disasters are both considered
If your wallet requires a written phrase, make the backup offline and keep it in a location protected from casual access, fire, water and loss. A metal recovery-phrase backup plate can resist fire, water and corrosion, according to Ledger’s product guidance, but it is not automatically safer if anyone can find it. Use secure physical storage only when your wallet actually uses a recoverable phrase; custodial or passkey-based wallets may have different requirements.
Mobile software wallet versus hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a separate physical device that keeps signing operations apart from the phone. It can reduce exposure of private keys to a compromised iPhone, but it does not remove phishing, malicious transaction approvals, physical coercion or human error. A phone-only wallet is more convenient and may support more direct mobile interactions, but the phone and its apps become the primary signing environment.
| Question | Mobile software wallet | Hardware wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Where signing keys are held | Typically within the phone’s wallet app or its protected storage; confirm with the wallet documentation. | On a separate device designed to keep key operations isolated from the phone; confirm the model’s architecture. |
| What you must back up | The wallet’s stated recovery phrase, encrypted backup or alternative recovery method. | The device’s recovery phrase and the physical device; follow its exact recovery procedure. |
| Phone compatibility | Runs directly on the iPhone if the wallet supports your iOS version and networks. | Requires a supported connection method and companion app; compatibility varies by device and wallet. |
| Main convenience | Fast access for mobile payments, swaps or app connections. | Keys can remain separate from a general-purpose phone. |
| Main failure modes | Phishing, malicious apps, stolen-device access, cloud or phrase exposure and mistaken approvals. | Phishing and mistaken approvals still apply, alongside loss of the device or recovery phrase and physical handling errors. |
| Who may prefer it | Someone making smaller, frequent transactions who can follow strict app and backup practices. | Someone holding significant value or wanting signing keys separated from the daily phone. |
Neither approach is universally necessary. Choose based on the assets and networks you need, the wallet’s recovery options, how often you transact and whether you can protect the relevant phrase or device over time.
If the iPhone is lost, stolen or exposed
When the phone is missing
- Use Find My from a trusted device or browser session to mark the iPhone as lost and display a contact method.
- Do not meet a supposed finder or thief alone to recover the device.
- Contact your mobile carrier if your number or SIM could be abused, and secure the Apple Account from a trusted device.
- If the phone cannot be recovered, remotely erase it when appropriate, understanding that erasure does not replace the wallet’s recovery backup.
- Restore the wallet only through its documented recovery process on a trusted device. Never enter the phrase into a support link or an unverified app.
When the recovery phrase may have been seen
Treat a phrase as compromised if it was photographed, typed into an online form, entered into an untrusted app, shared with another person or stored in a service that may have been breached. Move assets to a newly created wallet with a new recovery method using a trusted process. Do not keep using the old address merely because the iPhone itself is now secure. If a transfer has already been confirmed on-chain, iPhone settings cannot reverse it.
