For wide-camera consistency, the iPhone 18 Pro came out ahead in TechRadar’s tested scenes. A current-generation portrait verdict is not available in that comparison: its portrait test was still to come. Earlier iPhone 17 Pro portrait samples suggest the choice may come down to warmer, more flattering iPhone color versus a possibly more realistic Samsung look.

The available hands-on portrait comparison is for the prior-generation iPhone 17 Pro against the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Photographer Amy Davies found both dedicated portrait modes natural-looking. She described the iPhone rendering as warmer and more flattering, and Samsung’s as possibly more realistic; on close inspection, the iPhone’s cutout outline was somewhat more visible. Zoom: Samsung offers more optical framing choices
The strongest clear difference in the current comparison is the choice of dedicated telephoto lenses. TechRadar lists a 48 MP 4x optical telephoto for iPhone 18 Pro and 10 MP 3x plus 50 MP 5x optical telephotos for Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung therefore gives you two native telephoto perspectives rather than one, which can make it easier to frame subjects at different distances without changing your position. Optical lens options should not be conflated with sensor crops or digital magnification. A crop from a sensor or a digitally enlarged image is not the same thing as a dedicated optical telephoto lens, even when a phone labels the result “optical quality.” TechRadar’s reviewer preferred the Samsung for zoom in the tests performed. In TechRadar’s current-generation test, the iPhone 18 Pro was sometimes brighter and more consistent on wide-camera low-light scenes. The reviewer also found Samsung’s processing could produce preferable results depending on the scene and preferred aesthetic. Low-light judgments can change with the lens used, the scene, and whether Night mode activates automatically or is selected manually. Brightness, fine detail, color, and sharpness on moving subjects are separate outcomes; a brighter image is not necessarily the more detailed or more pleasing one. The cited comparisons do not establish a controlled numeric winner across those conditions.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose Galaxy S26 Ultra if zoom range and framing flexibility matter most. Its dedicated 3x and 5x optical telephotos give you more native telephoto choices.
- Choose iPhone 18 Pro if you prioritize the latest comparison’s wide-camera consistency and its more natural rendering. TechRadar’s reviewer found it the more consistent wide shooter in the scenes tested.
- For portraits, decide by rendering preference only with the generation caveat in mind. The available direct portrait samples compare iPhone 17 Pro with Galaxy S26 Ultra, not iPhone 18 Pro.
