Deleting a personal album removes the album, not the photos and videos in it: they stay in your photo library and any other albums they belong to. A shared album works differently—deleting it removes it from the creator’s and subscribers’ devices, and Apple says its shared photos are permanently deleted. Save anything you want to keep before removing a shared album.
Delete a personal album on iPhone
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections, then Albums.
- Touch and hold the album you want to remove.
- Tap Delete Album.
The album disappears, but its photos and videos remain in your library and in any other albums they were added to. Apple’s iPhone instructions describe this behavior.

Delete a personal album on iPad
- Open Photos.
- Tap Collections, then Albums. Depending on the layout, you may also find Albums in the library sidebar.
- Touch and hold the album.
- Tap Delete Album.
The photos and videos remain in the library and in any other albums they belong to. See Apple’s iPad instructions.
Delete a personal album on Mac
- Open Photos. If needed, reveal the Albums section in the sidebar.
- Control-click the album in the sidebar.
- Choose Delete Album, then click Delete to confirm.
Apple says the album is removed from the library and iCloud, while the photos and videos remain in the photo library. If you remove it by mistake, choose Edit > Undo Delete Album. Apple’s Mac guide covers the steps.

Delete an album on iCloud.com
On iCloud.com, select Albums, point to or hold the album, open its More menu, choose Delete Album, and confirm. If iCloud Photos is enabled, album-organization changes appear on devices where iCloud Photos is turned on. The photos and videos stay in the library and in any other albums. Follow Apple’s iCloud instructions.
Personal albums and shared albums are different
Deleting a personal album removes an organizational container; it does not delete the items from your photo library. Deleting a shared album has broader consequences: it removes the album from the creator’s and subscribers’ devices, and Apple says the photos in that shared album are permanently deleted. Save any shared photos you want to keep before deleting it. Photos that someone previously saved or downloaded into their personal library remain there.

Also distinguish deleting an album from deleting individual photos. Removing a photo from an ordinary album on Mac leaves it in the library. Apple warns that deleting photos from a Smart Album deletes them from the library. Make sure the action you choose is Delete Album if you only want to remove the album.
