iPhone Lockdown Mode is for people who may be individually targeted by highly sophisticated attacks such as mercenary spyware. It reduces the device’s attack surface by disabling or restricting features attackers have abused, but it is not a general anti-hacking switch, an infection detector, or a guarantee that an iPhone cannot be compromised.
For most people, keeping iOS and apps updated is the more important everyday protection. Lockdown Mode is worth considering when your role, public profile, contacts, or circumstances give you a credible reason to expect targeted spyware—and only after weighing the impact on messaging, browsing, photo sharing, wireless connections, and device management.

What does iPhone Lockdown Mode protect against?
Apple describes Lockdown Mode as protection against “extremely rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks.” It is an optional, deliberately restrictive setting intended to make exploitation harder by removing or narrowing functions that can provide an attack path. The primary threat is a targeted operation against a particular person, including attacks associated with mercenary spyware.
Lockdown Mode does not scan an iPhone and report that it is infected. It does not remove spyware that may already be present, and it cannot promise immunity from every exploit or from attacks developed after a particular iOS release. Apple’s own security documentation warns that when the mode is enabled, “a device doesn’t function the way it typically does.”

The protections are therefore preventive and risk-reducing. They are most valuable when an attacker is willing to spend substantial effort finding a way into one person’s phone, rather than when you are dealing with ordinary spam, mass-market malware, a stolen password, or a lost device.

Who should use Lockdown Mode?
People with a credible targeting risk
The strongest case is a person whose work, position, public activity, or contacts could make them a deliberate target for sophisticated surveillance. Examples can include people doing sensitive public-interest work or others whose identity and activities attract the attention of a well-resourced attacker. The deciding factor is not technical skill or general anxiety; it is a plausible, individualised threat.

People who receive an Apple threat notification
An Apple threat notification should be treated seriously, but it is not a diagnosis that spyware was installed. Apple is telling the recipient that it believes they were targeted. Amnesty International describes such a notification as a strong indication of targeting while stressing that forensic analysis is needed to determine whether a device was actually compromised.
Someone can also have an independent, credible reason to fear targeting without receiving a notification. Amnesty notes that people in that situation may still enable Lockdown Mode for additional protection. A missing notification is not proof that a person is safe.

People who can tolerate the restrictions
Lockdown Mode is a poor fit if your work depends on complex websites, frequent unsolicited FaceTime calls, Shared Albums, unmanaged accessories, mobile-device-management enrollment, or older cellular networks. Before enabling it, identify which of the following matter to your daily workflow:

Does Lockdown Mode block Pegasus?
There is no universal block against Pegasus or any other spyware. A documented Citizen Lab case shows why the feature can nevertheless matter.
In its April 18, 2023 report, Triple Threat: NSO Group’s Pegasus Spyware Returns in 2022, Citizen Lab examined exploit activity observed in 2022. The report said customers deployed at least three iOS 15/16 zero-click exploit chains against civil-society targets. For the PWNYOURHOME chain, the researchers had not seen a successful compromise on devices with Lockdown Mode enabled.
That observation is useful but narrow. Citizen Lab also described a period in which enabled targets received real-time warnings and raised the possibility that the operator later found a way to defeat that warning mechanism. The report’s conclusion is qualified: “While any one security measure is unlikely to blunt all targeted spyware attacks, and security is a multi-faceted problem,” the case supports enabling the feature for high-risk users who may be targeted because of who they are or what they do.
In other words, Lockdown Mode may disrupt particular exploit chains, but the PWNYOURHOME result is not an effectiveness rate and does not establish immunity from future Pegasus campaigns, different spyware, or a compromise through an unaffected path.

What still works, and what are the trade-offs?
Lockdown Mode is restrictive, not a total communications shutdown. Ordinary phone calls and plain text messages continue to work. Emergency features such as SOS calls are unaffected.
The trade-off is that reducing attack surface also removes convenience. A website that depends on advanced browser features may be unusable. A new FaceTime contact may not be able to reach you. Shared Albums vanish from Photos for as long as the mode is enabled, and connecting to a computer requires an unlock. These are expected effects rather than signs that the iPhone is malfunctioning.
Apple allows users to exclude a trusted website, app, or contact in some circumstances. Controls and exclusions depend on the software version, and every exclusion gives back some of the protection. Use one only when a necessary workflow cannot operate otherwise, and review the current on-device explanation before approving it.

How do I turn Lockdown Mode on?
Update the iPhone first, then use Apple’s documented setup path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Lockdown Mode.
- Choose Turn On Lockdown Mode.
- Select Turn On & Restart.
- Enter the device passcode when prompted.
Apple recommends current software before activation. Enable the feature separately on each supported Apple device you use and want covered. Turning it on for an iPhone also turns it on for a paired Apple Watch.
Which devices support it, and do you need to buy anything?
Apple lists availability beginning with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, and watchOS 10. Later software releases add protections, so the behavior on a particular device can differ from the original iOS 16 implementation. Check the current Apple support instructions for your exact model and operating-system version.

Lockdown Mode is built into supported Apple operating systems. Activation requires no separate purchase, accessory, consumer spyware-removal product, or new iPhone. The important requirements are current software, a passcode-protected device, and a deliberate decision about which of your Apple devices need coverage.

Does an Apple threat notification mean you have been hacked?
No. It means Apple believes an attempt to target you was made; it does not by itself prove that spyware was implanted or that an attacker obtained your data.
Amnesty International’s guidance, Apple threat notifications: What they mean and what you can do, explains the distinction. Amnesty’s Security Lab and partner organisations have forensically confirmed spyware cases among some recipients, but confirmation requires examination of the device and relevant evidence.
If you receive a notification, read Apple’s official instructions, take the warning seriously, and seek qualified digital-forensics assistance. For a civil-society member, Amnesty’s Security Lab or Access Now may be able to provide support; availability and eligibility must be confirmed directly. Lockdown Mode can reduce exposure while you obtain help, but it should not be treated as a substitute for an investigation.
Common mistakes to avoid
Expecting a detection alert
The setting changes how the device behaves; it does not tell you whether an infection exists. A clean-looking phone is not proof that no compromise occurred.
Assuming one enabled device covers everything
Apple recommends enabling the mode on each supported device in scope. An iPhone automatically passes the setting to a paired Apple Watch, but other Apple devices still need their own coverage.
Ignoring software updates
Lockdown Mode’s protections evolve with operating-system releases. Running an older version can leave you without later safeguards and can produce different behavior from Apple’s current support documentation.
Interpreting a broken website as a hardware problem
Missing fonts, images, or advanced site functions are known consequences of blocking complex web technologies. Test the same task with a simpler site or an approved workflow rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Using exclusions casually
An exclusion may restore a trusted workflow, but it also narrows the restriction that was protecting you. Keep exclusions to the minimum necessary and remove them when the need ends.

Choose Lockdown Mode when the potential harm from a sophisticated, targeted compromise outweighs the loss of convenience and you can keep every relevant device updated. Do not choose it as a generic substitute for updates, strong account security, safe recovery practices, or professional incident response. Its value is greatest as one layer in a broader plan for people whose circumstances make them plausible targets.
Apple’s launch explanation captures the intended audience: “While the vast majority of users will never be the victims of highly targeted cyberattacks, we will work tirelessly to protect the small number of users who are.”
