iPhone Location Services: Precise vs. Approximate Location

Precise Location is a per-app iPhone setting. Turn it off to share an approximate location instead, and manage access duration and Find My sharing separately.

On iPhone, Precise Location is a per-app setting. Leave it on when an app needs your specific location; turn it off when an approximate location is enough. Turning it off does not deny that app all location access. The setting is separate from Find My’s controls for sharing your location with people.

What Precise Location changes

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, tap an app, and review its location access. With Precise Location on, the app can use your specific location. Turn it off to share only your approximate location. Apple says approximate location may be sufficient for an app that does not need your exact location. Apple’s iOS 26 iPhone User Guide explains the setting.

Location Services can use information from GPS networks, Bluetooth connections, local Wi-Fi networks, and cellular networks to determine location. When an app asks for access, its permission prompt identifies the app and gives the developer’s stated reason. Consider that explanation and the app’s privacy policy when deciding whether approximate location will serve its purpose. Apple’s Location Services and Privacy information describes how the service works.

How to choose the right setting

  • Keep Precise Location on if the app’s purpose depends on your specific location.
  • Turn it off if approximate location is enough for what you need the app to do.
  • Review access duration separately. Precision controls how specific the location can be; permission duration controls whether and when the app can access it.

Do not assume a particular third-party app will work fully with approximate location unless its current documentation confirms that.

Precision is not the same as permission duration

Approximate versus precise is one decision; whether and when an app can access location is another. Apple documents one-time and while-in-use access, as well as background access. You can change an app’s permission later in Settings. Background location use can also trigger periodic reminders and a map showing the app’s location activity. Apple’s Location Services guidance covers app permissions and reminders.

App location access and Find My sharing are separate

Precise Location controls what a particular app can access. To manage who can see your location through Find My, use Find My’s people-sharing controls instead. Apple’s instructions cover turning on Share My Location, choosing how long to share with someone, and stopping sharing with one person or everyone. Changing an app’s Precise Location setting does not replace those controls. See Apple’s Find My instructions for sharing your location.

What happens if you turn off Location Services entirely?

Turning off Location Services globally is broader than changing the setting for one app. While Location Services is off, apps cannot use location through that service in the foreground or background, which may limit important features. Apple also says iPhone location information may be used for emergency calls to aid response regardless of whether Location Services is enabled. Neither setting should be treated as proof that every service has lost every possible way to infer location. Apple’s Location Services guidance describes the broader setting and emergency-call caveat.
