When Windows says the iPhone driver is not installed and is waiting for Windows Update, the problem is usually one of four things: a cable that carries power but not data, an iPhone that has not been unlocked and trusted, a driver waiting under Windows 11’s Optional updates, or a damaged device entry in Device Manager. It does not by itself mean the iPhone is unsafe or damaged.
Work through the checks below in order. Start with the physical connection and trust prompt, then use Apple Devices, complete Windows driver updates, repair the entry in Device Manager, and only then investigate iTunes, security software, or Apple’s update servers.

What the “waiting for Windows Update” message means
Windows is reporting that it does not currently have a usable driver for the iPhone interface. A driver is the Windows component that lets the operating system and Apple’s software exchange data over USB. The phone can still charge while this communication is unavailable, so charging alone does not prove that the connection is working.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe wording also does not always identify the root cause. A missing or delayed driver is one possibility, but the same symptom can appear when the phone is locked, the trust relationship was declined, a cable is charge-only, or Apple Devices cannot contact Apple’s servers during an update or restore. Treat the message as a starting point for isolation rather than as proof that Windows Update is the only problem.

1. Check the cable, USB port and trust state
Do this before changing software. It rules out the most common physical and permission failures.
- Use a data-capable cable. The cable must support both data and charging. A charge-only cable can power the iPhone while leaving Windows unable to detect it. Match the connector to your iPhone: Lightning or USB-C.
- Unlock the iPhone. Enter the passcode and leave the Home Screen visible while you connect it. A locked phone may not present its data interface to Windows.
- Accept the trust prompt. If the iPhone asks whether to trust this computer, tap Trust and enter the passcode. Apple’s Windows guide says the device appears in the sidebar only after this trust permission is granted.
- Try a different USB port. Connect directly to the computer rather than through a hub or dock. If the desktop has ports on both the front and rear, test one of each type.
- Try another known-good cable. Inspect both ends for looseness or damage. If possible, use a cable that has already transferred data successfully.
- Isolate the computer. Connect the same iPhone and cable to another computer. Conversely, connect another iPhone to the affected computer. This identifies whether the failure follows the phone, cable or Windows installation.
If the phone appears after changing the cable, port or trust setting, no driver repair is necessary. Keep that working combination for the remaining software checks.
2. Use Apple Devices first
Apple Devices is the current Windows workflow for selecting and managing an iPhone. Install it from the Microsoft Store if it is not already present, then open it with the iPhone unlocked and trusted.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Apple Devices.
- Select the iPhone in the left sidebar. If it is absent, return to the cable, unlock and trust checks instead of proceeding with an update.
- Open General.
- Use Update when you need to apply an available iPhone software update. Use Restore only when that is the intended recovery action and you have followed Apple’s preparation instructions.
If Apple Devices sees the phone but Windows still shows a pending driver, close the app, disconnect the phone and continue with Windows Update. If Apple Devices cannot see the phone at all, the issue is still at the USB, trust or Windows-driver layer.

3. Install the driver through Windows Update
Microsoft identifies Windows Update as the preferred way to obtain drivers. In Windows 11, optional drivers are not installed automatically, so a pending iPhone entry can remain unnoticed until you open the dedicated list.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Select the entry that corresponds to the iPhone or its Apple USB device, then choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not insist on a restart.
After restarting, unlock and reconnect the iPhone, accept the trust prompt if it returns, and check Apple Devices again. If Optional updates is empty, select Check for updates on the main Windows Update page and install the regular updates offered for your system before checking the optional list again.
Do not assume that every optional driver is relevant. Read the device name and version shown by Windows and install only the entry associated with the iPhone connection. If Windows Update repeatedly fails to download the entry, move to Device Manager rather than repeatedly clicking the same control.
4. Repair the iPhone entry in Device Manager
Device Manager can update, reinstall, roll back or replace a device driver. The exact category can vary by Windows build and by the state of the connection, so look for the entry that appears or disappears when you unplug and reconnect the iPhone.

Update automatically
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand likely categories such as Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers or Other devices.
- Locate the iPhone or the device marked with a warning icon. Unplugging and reconnecting the phone can help identify the correct row.
- Right-click it and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and let Windows complete the search.
- Restart the computer, reconnect the trusted iPhone and test Apple Devices.
Uninstall and reinstall the device
Use this when automatic updating reports that no suitable driver is available or the device remains marked as missing.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected iPhone-related entry and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove a driver package, read the wording carefully; do not remove unrelated USB drivers.
- Restart Windows with the iPhone disconnected.
- After sign-in, reconnect the unlocked iPhone with the data cable and approve Trust.
- Allow Windows to detect the hardware and then check Apple Devices.
Restarting is important because Windows uses the next hardware-detection cycle to recreate the device entry.
Roll back after a recent Windows update
If the iPhone worked until a Windows update installed, the newer driver may be incompatible with this setup. In Device Manager, right-click the device, select Properties, open the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Restart and test again. The rollback option is unavailable when Windows has no earlier driver package to restore.
Manual manufacturer-driver installation
Device Manager also supports selecting a driver package manually. Use this route only when you have an official, Windows-compatible Apple driver package from a trusted Apple distribution channel. Avoid random driver-download sites and do not substitute a generic USB driver simply because it installs; a generic package may provide power detection without the iPhone data functions Apple Devices needs.

5. If the computer still uses iTunes
Apple Devices replaces the former iTunes device-management workflow on current Windows installations, but iTunes troubleshooting remains relevant when an existing setup still uses it.
- Install the latest supported Microsoft Store version of iTunes for your Windows edition.
- Run the installation or repair with administrator access.
- Restart Windows after installation and before reconnecting the phone.
- Temporarily check whether security software is blocking the installer or Apple’s device components. Re-enable protection after the test and create an appropriate allow rule only if you understand the security impact.
Do not run Apple Devices and iTunes as competing managers during the same test. Close one application completely before opening the other, then reconnect the trusted iPhone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Separate a driver problem from an Apple-server problem
An update or restore can fail even after Windows recognizes the iPhone. In that case the driver may be working and the failure may be the connection from Apple Devices or iTunes to Apple’s update server.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Signs the driver is probably working
- The iPhone appears in Apple Devices or iTunes.
- You can select the phone and open its General or device-summary screen.
- The failure occurs only when you choose Update or Restore, with a message about contacting or verifying Apple’s server.
Network and hosts-file checks
- Confirm that the computer has a working internet connection in a browser.
- Try a different network, such as another trusted Wi-Fi connection, to rule out a router or network-policy block.
- Check whether security software is filtering Apple’s connection. Use its documented exception process rather than disabling protection permanently.
- A modified Windows hosts file can redirect or block Apple service addresses. If you have previously edited it, review those entries or restore the file using Microsoft’s documented method.
If Apple Devices cannot reach the server, reinstalling the USB driver will not solve that specific failure. Resolve the network block, then retry the update or restore.

7. Decide when the fault is hardware
Escalate after basic isolation, not before. If the iPhone is unlocked and trusted, a known-good data cable and USB port have been tested, Windows has been restarted, and the same failure occurs on another computer, the remaining possibilities include a damaged cable, iPhone connector or other hardware fault. Apple advises contacting support for service when another cable, port and computer all fail.
| What you observe | Most likely area | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Phone charges but never appears in Apple Devices | Charge-only cable, USB port, locked phone or missing trust permission | Use a data cable, unlock the Home Screen, tap Trust, and test another port |
| Phone appears after installing an Optional driver update | Windows driver delivery | Restart and confirm the device remains visible after reconnecting |
| Device Manager shows a warning icon | Damaged, missing or incompatible device entry | Update automatically, then uninstall and restart if necessary |
| Phone appears, but Update or Restore cannot contact Apple | Network, hosts file or security-software filtering | Try another network and review filtering or hosts-file changes |
| Several cables, ports and computers fail | Possible physical hardware fault | Contact Apple support for service |
8. A clean test sequence after making a change
Use the same short test after each fix so you know which change mattered:
- Restart Windows if the step changed a driver or installed software.
- Open Apple Devices before connecting the phone.
- Connect with the data-capable cable directly to the computer.
- Unlock the iPhone and leave the Home Screen visible.
- Tap Trust if prompted.
- Wait for the iPhone to appear in the sidebar, then open General.
If the phone appears, the driver and USB path are functioning. If it appears only on another computer, concentrate on Windows drivers, security software and USB configuration on the original computer. If it appears nowhere, repeat the cable and hardware isolation before making more Windows changes.
