Then target the cause: reduce screen brightness, shorten Auto-Lock, or use Low Power Mode when you need extra runtime. Menu names and availability vary by iPhone model and iOS version.
1. Find what is using your battery
Open Settings > Battery and review battery usage by app, daily activity, and any suggestions or insights Apple shows. This is the best starting point because it helps you distinguish a display that stays on too long from an app or background activity that is consuming power.

Apple’s battery-drain guidance notes that high screen brightness and disabled Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock can be opportunities to reduce use. A burst of background activity after setting up an iPhone or installing a software update can be temporary, so give the phone time to finish before assuming the battery has developed a lasting problem. 2. Lower screen brightness
The display can be a major source of battery use. Reduce brightness in Control Center or enable Auto-Brightness at Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. Exact interface labels can differ across iOS versions.

Apple may flag unusually high brightness in Battery insights; its guidance says, “High screen brightness consumes a lot of energy, and your brightness is set to higher than the recommended level.” Check the Battery screen for a device-specific suggestion rather than assuming brightness is always the main cause.
3. Set a shorter Auto-Lock time
Auto-Lock turns off the display after the iPhone has been idle. Choose a shorter interval at Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, if that control is available on your device. This is useful when the phone is often left unlocked between uses. Low Power Mode sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds.
4. Use Low Power Mode when you need extra runtime
Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting selected features, which can include Background App Refresh, Mail fetch, automatic downloads, brightness, visual effects, and Auto-Lock. Some tasks may take longer, and some information may update less often.
- iPhone 15 and later: go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: go to Settings > Battery.
Low Power Mode turns off after the iPhone is charged to 80% or higher. It is a practical temporary setting when you are away from a charger, rather than a substitute for investigating a persistent drain. See Apple’s Low Power Mode guidance for details.

5. Check Adaptive Power availability
Adaptive Power is available on supported iPhone models running iOS 26 or later. It can adjust performance, slightly reduce brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode when the charge reaches 20%. Apple says the feature needs at least seven days to learn a person’s usage patterns before it engages.
Apple currently lists iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 17 models, and iPhone Air as supported. Whether it is enabled by default depends on the model. Check Settings > Battery > Power Mode on your iPhone, since supported devices and defaults can change with software releases. Apple’s Adaptive Power instructions describe the feature and eligibility.
6. Investigate apps and background activity
Use the app and activity breakdown in Settings > Battery to focus on what your own phone reports. If an app shows substantial background activity, look at how and when you use it and review its background permissions. Low Power Mode can stop Background App Refresh when you need to conserve power.

Do not treat force-quitting every app as a universal battery fix. The more useful first move is to identify the specific app or activity shown in Battery and address that pattern.

7. Keep the iPhone away from excessive heat
Heat is a battery-lifespan issue, not just a same-day runtime concern. Apple says ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C) can permanently reduce battery lifespan and gives 62° to 72°F (16° to 22°C) as the ideal ambient range. Avoid using or charging the phone in excessive heat. Apple’s battery maintenance guidance covers temperature and battery care.
Cold conditions can temporarily shorten runtime. Apple says performance returns when the battery temperature returns to its normal operating range.

Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the time the iPhone spends fully charged, which helps protect long-term battery lifespan. On iPhone 15 and later, you can also set a Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in 5% increments. These settings address battery aging over time; they do not promise more runtime from the charge you have today.

9. Leave Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on unless there is a reason to disconnect
Turning off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as a routine battery-saving habit is not a reliable blanket fix. Apple says these radios are designed to draw minimal power when they are not connected to a network or accessory, and recommends keeping them on for the best experience. Disconnect when you have a specific reason, not because you expect a general battery improvement. Apple’s battery guidance explains its recommendation.
10. Check Battery Health if poor runtime persists
Rechargeable batteries chemically age and hold less charge over time. If your iPhone still runs down unusually quickly after you have checked usage and settings, look at its battery condition:
- iPhone 15 and later: Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
If the screen shows Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement. The Battery Health screen helps distinguish a settings issue from an aging battery. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance and battery health information explain what to check.

For an immediate improvement, prioritize the cause shown in Battery: reduce brightness if the display is using power, shorten Auto-Lock if the screen stays on while idle, or use Low Power Mode when you need to stretch the current charge. Adaptive Power can automate some adjustments on supported devices. Heat avoidance and charging optimization help preserve battery lifespan over time, while a Battery Health check is the next step if runtime remains poor.
Apple’s guidance does not establish a universal number of minutes or hours that any single tip will add. Results depend on the iPhone, its condition, and how it is being used.
