Reasons it may still suit some buyers
- The 5.5-inch screen is relatively large, and the Home button with Touch ID suits people who prefer that older iPhone design.
- The dual-camera system includes a telephoto lens and supports portrait photography features.
- It supports Qi wireless charging and has an IP67 rating, though water resistance can diminish with age or prior repairs.
- The A11 chip may be adequate for basic tasks, but a used phone’s actual condition and software compatibility matter more than the chip name alone.
Important trade-offs
- It is a discontinued 2017 model, so do not assume current software support or future app compatibility; verify that the apps you need work with the specific device.
- It lacks 5G, uses Lightning rather than USB-C, and has thicker bezels than newer iPhones.
- Battery life depends heavily on battery health and replacement history. A price alone cannot tell you whether the battery is usable.

How to evaluate a used or refurbished iPhone 8 Plus
- Verify the model and storage. Confirm whether the phone is the 8 Plus and whether it has 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. Check the device’s settings and compare them with the seller’s description.
- Check PTA status and IMEI. Ask for the IMEI and verify the device’s approval status through the relevant official PTA channels before paying. Do not treat “factory unlocked” or “SIM works” as proof of PTA approval.
- Inspect battery health and repair history. Ask to see Battery Health in Settings and whether the battery, display or cameras have been replaced. A replacement is not automatically a problem, but its quality, documentation and warranty affect value.
- Test key functions in person. Try Touch ID, both rear cameras, charging, speakers and buttons. Inspect the frame and back glass for damage, and check water indicators where accessible. Avoid relying on the IP67 rating as a guarantee for a years-old or repaired phone.
- Read the seller’s terms. Get the return window, warranty coverage, included accessories and any conditions in writing. Clarify whether the quoted amount includes taxes and other charges.
- Question sealed or refurbished claims. Request clear evidence of what “sealed,” “refurbished” or “repaired” means for that unit. A box or label alone does not establish original parts, condition or warranty.
How to decide whether it is worth buying
Compare the total cost of the individual phone, including any approval or repair expense, rather than comparing headline prices alone. Weigh that against battery health, storage, condition, return rights and warranty. If a newer used iPhone is available at a similar total cost, compare its remaining software support, network compatibility and condition before choosing the older 8 Plus.
