Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo is scheduled to go on sale in China on October 23, after the Pro models launched on September 18. The timing puts the products in the same news cycle, but does not show that anticipation for Duo drove Pro sales.
What the 12% China sales increase actually compares
Counterpoint Research reported a 12% year-over-year increase for iPhone 18 Pro series sales in China in the launch period. MacRumors, attributing the figure to Counterpoint, specifies the comparison: the iPhone 18 Pro models’ first three days on sale exceeded the iPhone 17 Pro series’ entire first week by 12%. It is therefore an asymmetric comparison, not a like-for-like weekly growth rate. Counterpoint Research and MacRumors reported the result on September 30, 2026.

The figure describes sales, not shipments, revenue, or a forecast for the Pro line’s full launch cycle. The published comparison does not provide enough detail to infer how demand will develop after those opening days.

Launch dates put the Pro phones before iPhone Duo
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. In mainland China, preorders opened September 12 and sales began September 18. iPhone Duo was announced the same day as the Pro phones, but its China launch is scheduled later: preorders are set to begin October 16, with availability from October 23. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement and iPhone Duo announcement give those product and timing details.

Counterpoint’s September 14–20 launch-week measure also spans several days before the Pro models went on sale. MacRumors separately reported that Apple held 33% of China’s smartphone market during that specific week, citing Counterpoint. That is a one-week market-share figure, not Apple’s share over a quarter or year; the week included both pre-sale days and the September 18 launch.
What the report does—and does not—say about Duo
The sales comparison and the later foldable launch establish chronology, not cause. Neither Counterpoint’s reported result nor the accompanying coverage demonstrates that consumers bought the Pro models because they were anticipating iPhone Duo. The available figures also do not isolate the effect of Duo’s announcement from other influences on early Pro sales.

Apple describes Duo as its first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer screen. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently tested findings. They explain why Duo is a distinct product launch, but they do not provide evidence about what prompted customers to choose the Pro series in September.
