The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the better fit if your workflow depends on Apple Log 2, ProRes or ProRes RAW, Genlock, high-frame-rate Dolby Vision, or Center Stage selfie framing. The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the better fit if you value its listed 3x and 5x optical zoom options or want Samsung’s APV recording workflow. Choose based on the formats your editing apps support, the framing you need, and how your team handles files—not megapixel counts alone.
The comparison below uses manufacturer-published specifications for these models. A recent hands-on comparison covers the iPhone 18 Pro, not the Pro Max, so its subjective observations are identified separately.

These are feature-based comparisons, not independent image-quality test results. Your app compatibility, lighting, settings, and file-handling workflow can matter as much as the camera feature list.

Video formats, frame rates, and controls
iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 fps on the main camera, Cinematic mode up to 4K/60, and Action mode up to 2.8K/60. Its listed Pro controls include aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and histogram viewing. Apple also lists Apple Log 2, Genlock, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, with ProRes recording up to 4K/120 when recording externally. Apple’s technical specifications describe these as device capabilities; actual results depend on recording settings, light, storage, and workflow.

Galaxy S26 Ultra
Samsung documents its Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec on the S26 Ultra and explains how to enable APV and Log recording in its APV support instructions. Those instructions name compatible apps including Instagram, Threads, Google Photos, YouTube, LumaFusion, and Snapchat Chat. Confirm that the current app support and export path cover your entire process before you make APV central to a production workflow.
Samsung’s U.K. newsroom says APV supports up to 8K/30 and claims it uses 10% less storage than comparable formats at the same objective visual quality. That is Samsung’s claim, not an independent measurement. Samsung also describes APV recording to external USB storage. See Samsung’s APV announcement for its description of the codec.

Zoom and lens reach
Samsung lists a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultra-wide camera, and 50MP and 10MP telephoto cameras on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Its published capabilities include 3x and 5x optical zoom, optical-quality 2x and 10x zoom, and digital zoom up to 100x. These are zoom labels, not a guarantee of equivalent image quality at every distance or in every lighting condition. Samsung’s specifications are on its Galaxy S26 Ultra product page.
No comparable Pro Max lens-by-lens specification was published, so a complete hardware-to-hardware zoom table would imply more than the available information establishes. For one limited comparison, TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 review tested the iPhone 18 Pro—not the Pro Max—and described the Galaxy as having more flexible optical reach: 5x plus 3x, versus 4x on the tested iPhone. That reviewer’s observation should not be treated as a direct Pro Max test. Read the TechRadar comparison for its specific models and judgments.

Front camera, audio, and on-camera video
Apple lists an 18MP autofocus Center Stage front camera with ultra-stabilized video on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It also lists Dual Capture up to 4K/30, four studio-quality microphones, wind-noise reduction, and Audio Mix. These features make the iPhone’s documented front-camera and audio toolkit especially relevant to creators who film themselves, though specifications alone do not establish how footage will look or sound in a particular room.
In TechRadar’s October 2026 comparison of the iPhone 18 Pro and Galaxy S26 Ultra, the reviewer favored the iPhone selfie camera and Center Stage framing. That is a subjective finding from the Pro model, not a Pro Max test.

Storage, display, weight, and recording logistics
| Specification | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.9 inches (Apple) | 6.9 inches (Samsung) |
| Weight | 249 g (Apple) | 214 g (Samsung) |
| Listed storage configurations | 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB (Apple) | Not stated in the cited Samsung product specifications |
| Video playback claim | Up to 45 hours; Apple manufacturer playback metric, not a recording-endurance test | Not stated in the cited Samsung product specifications |
Apple’s figures are on its technical specifications page; Samsung’s are on the S26 Ultra product page. For either phone, compare the storage tier you need with the file sizes and transfer process in your own workflow. If recording externally, verify drive speed, cable, formatting, capacity, and compatibility with the exact recording mode and app before relying on that setup on a shoot.

What hands-on comparisons add—and what they do not
TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 comparison says the iPhone 18 Pro’s default rendering looked more neutral, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s looked more contrast-rich or stylized. It also favored the iPhone selfie camera and Center Stage framing. These are one reviewer’s subjective observations, and the iPhone tested was the 18 Pro rather than the Pro Max. They can help frame questions to test for yourself, but they are not universal judgments or direct evidence about Pro Max performance.
Best Value
- 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
How to make the decision
- Start with your delivery format. Check whether your editing and publishing apps accept the exact codec, Log profile, frame rate, and resolution you plan to use.
- Match the camera reach to your work. Choose around the focal lengths you actually use; do not assume a high digital zoom label means the same quality as optical coverage.
- Check the whole file path. Confirm how you will transfer, edit, export, and share footage, including whether external recording is supported by your intended drive and cable setup.
- Account for how you film. If you frequently record yourself, consider the iPhone’s listed Center Stage front camera and audio features alongside rear-camera needs.
- Compare practical constraints. Check storage capacity, device weight, regional availability, and whether collaborators can open and edit the files you deliver.
Who should choose each phone?
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if
- Your edit pipeline benefits from Apple Log 2, ProRes, or ProRes RAW.
- You need the listed external ProRes recording capability, Genlock, or high-frame-rate Dolby Vision capture.
- You regularly film yourself and value the documented Center Stage front camera features.
Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if
- You want the listed 3x and 5x optical zoom options.
- You want to use Samsung’s APV and Log workflow and have verified compatibility across your editing and publishing apps.
Neither feature list proves that one phone will make better footage for every creator. The strongest choice is the one whose recording modes, lens options, and file formats fit your production pipeline.
