The choice is less about a meaningful starting-price gap than about how you use a camera, which operating system and ecosystem you prefer, and whether you want storage beyond 1TB. Samsung publishes more detailed camera and battery figures; Apple highlights a variable-aperture main camera and longer battery life without giving a directly comparable runtime figure in its announcement.
Price difference: nearly zero at 256GB
The figures below are U.S. launch prices, not guaranteed current prices. Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series on February 25, 2026. Prices from retailers can change, so check the selected storage tier and current listing before buying.

| 2TB | Available; price not stated in the cited Apple announcement | Not listed by Samsung | No matched tier |
The 512GB and 1TB amounts are reported launch prices, not a live quote. Confirm them against the seller’s current listing. Samsung’s U.S. purchase page showed a temporary 256GB reduction from $1,399.99 to $1,199.99 when checked; that was a volatile offer, not its enduring MSRP or a guaranteed current price (Samsung U.S. purchase page). Compare final checkout totals, including any trade-in conditions, rather than treating a temporary promotion as the standard price.

Camera: choose between aperture control and specified zoom options
iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple identifies a 48MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture. A variable aperture changes how much light reaches the sensor and can provide another way to control exposure and depth of field. Apple’s announcement does not provide a complete camera-by-camera specification in the cited passage.

Galaxy S26 Ultra
Samsung lists four rear cameras: a 200MP wide camera, a 50MP ultra-wide, a 50MP 5x telephoto described as offering 10x optical-quality zoom, and a 10MP 3x telephoto. “Optical-quality” is not the same claim as optical zoom: Samsung specifies a 5x telephoto camera and separately describes 10x as optical-quality zoom. The listed cameras give a clearer hardware map for shoppers who frequently frame subjects at different distances (Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications).
Megapixel totals alone do not establish which phone takes better photographs. The available specifications are not a controlled, side-by-side image test, so they cannot settle differences in detail, color, low-light results, motion capture, or video quality.

Display and handling: Samsung’s figures are specific
Samsung specifies a 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate, and a weight of 214g (Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications). The cited Apple announcement does not supply matching display-size, resolution, refresh-rate, or weight measurements, so a numerical screen-and-size comparison is not established here.

For a purchase decision, handling matters alongside screen area: a large display can help with reading and video, while the phone’s weight and dimensions affect one-handed use and pocket comfort. If those are decisive, compare both models in person or consult their complete technical specifications before ordering; the numbers above describe Samsung only.

Battery: published claims are not a head-to-head test
Samsung lists a 5,000mAh typical battery and claims up to 31 hours of video playback for the Galaxy S26 Ultra (Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications). The 31-hour figure is Samsung’s manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement presented here.
Apple’s announcement says the iPhone 18 Pro Max has increased battery life but gives no directly equivalent runtime figure in the cited passage (Apple announcement). Because the available claims do not establish a common test method or comparable runtime, they do not show which phone lasts longer in everyday use.

Storage, operating system, and ecosystem can settle the choice
Choose the iPhone if you prefer Apple’s ecosystem
The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the fit for shoppers who want iOS and prefer Apple devices and services. Apple lists storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. That 2TB configuration is a differentiator if you need more built-in space than Samsung lists.
Choose the Galaxy if you prefer Samsung’s Android experience
The Galaxy S26 Ultra runs Samsung’s Android-based phone experience and is listed in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB configurations. Its published camera setup specifies two telephoto options, and Samsung provides a battery playback claim. Those details may matter to shoppers, but they do not override a preference for a different operating system or ecosystem.

Neither model is a universal winner. Consider which phone works best with the devices, services, apps, and routines you already rely on; switching ecosystems can matter more day to day than a small launch-price difference.
Quick Recap
Which one should you buy?
- Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want iOS, use Apple’s ecosystem, or need a listed 2TB storage tier.
- Pick the Galaxy S26 Ultra if Samsung’s Android experience suits you and its specified 3x and 5x telephoto cameras match how you shoot.
- Compare current offers before paying if price is the deciding factor: the launch prices are close at matched storage, but live discounts can change the result.
- Do not choose on battery or camera winner claims alone: the available manufacturer information does not provide an independent, matched test of real-world performance.
